No wood working shop is complete without a radial arm saw and the hundreds of wood workers to show you how to use them. It is a shame they are falling out of favor and I'm hoping I can change that by showing an idea I developed from seeing red pine trees a neighbor cut down for a clearing that nobody wanted and joined them with a saw nobody wants anymore. Flying Wing Jig meet the flying DeWalt Radial Arm Sawmill. ruclips.net/video/k7cBLq1rgPo/видео.html
I can see where this would be very handy, especially for large pieces. Thanks. Take care.
This is very nice to see, your Dad was smart, but the Apple didn't fall to far from the tree. They do make a table top swing arm ditigtal drill press now thats radial arm and can tap, but its mostly ment for metal working.
I sure need to make one of these.....Thanks you so much, Paul in Florida
Sure takes the fun out of guessing!! Very nice video. I now have my Father's old Craftsman RAS. I love everything about that saw! How does one obtain a copy of the design? Thanks!
Hmmmmmmmm
I have always wanted to teach metal working. What your doing here is the kind of thing we need in this country right now. We used to make nice things built to last for generations. People are getting tired of buying stuff that ends up in the landfill after a short time. please keep up the good work. I would love to see more videos.
Nice video. Love seeing radial arm saws.
This is a wonderful tribute to your father, an excellent building for you teaching OLD school ways, and carrying on his legacy. It reminds me of my father's workshop, though not as well presented as yours. Thankyou for the tour of the MR SAWDUST School, and I'm certain it will be around for long time.
That is cool!
I use a jig similar to yours on my table saw. It work the same way as yours. I have made many jewlry boxes and the like using the jig and as you said ,"you can't get it wrong"! I like the fact that any length can be obtained. I have a friend that trims out buildings he also uses a table saw . you can also adjust the jig to get different angles. Your dad make an excellent picture frame.
One day I went shopping on OfferUp and found a guy selling a 1953, DeWalt 3 phase, 3 horse GR54. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The thing looked brand new. Original paint, fully equipped and the former owner had even rigged an inverter so it could run on 220 single phase. He only asked $500. I went up to see it and verify that the thing really ran. It was perfect. No rust, not a single chip in the paint, threw a 14” blade and ran true and straight. It was even rigged with a switched power cord to operate a dust collector. I will never see a better deal for a power tool in my entire life. Trailered it home and spent the next week dialing it in to perfection. Added a custom made fence to hold Board Buddies for ripping. But I gotta say, Nothing but nothing beats a well made, 500 pound DeWalt radial.
...uh huh-
Hello Wally, I’ve been away from wood the last year, and happily just discovered this wonderful video. Thank You for sharing this gem, and I look forward to catching up on your other teachings! I’ve subscribed. Be well, stay safe, Best Regards, Shawn
I wish a manufacturer would design and produce a RAS incorporating SawStop-like safety technology. The RAS has many advantages over the table saw. The conventional wisdom is that the RAS is more dangerous, but SawStop technology would overcome this prejudice.
This is great Wally! Thank you for sharing. So excited to see classes scheduled again… See you soon!
Doc Brown would be proud.
I am sure it could be improved. Check out the plans on the Stodoys website.
This is wonderful, did your Dad get this idea from your brother in the boatbuilding trade. I remember seeing the idea of a hanging drill press back in the 80's in FineWoodworking magazine that a boatbuilder talked about. Cheers, I do something similar to drill stainless steel sheet that is 4x8 feet.....I am too old to be drilling hundreds of holes in stainless with a hand drill.....
If I recall correctly, It’s Wally here that is the Master Woodwright of beautiful marine interiors (and all other things wood!). I’ve seen pictures of his projects, and they are beyond description!
3:07 no way, that would have to be a CNC mill like a mohnarc and tool turret. STAINLESS STEEL it tough and you can work harden it real easy.
Thank You Mr Kunkel......this is wonderful.....cheers from Florida, Paul
Great video Wally! It's great to see how far you've come with the school.
Good to hear you carrying on your dad's traditions! I read his book cover to cover and built his table top for my DeWalt. I hope to be 1/10 th as good someday. I'd seriously consider taking your class if you'd move it to SC 8<)
What a great video!!!! So proud of everything you have done Wally and how great everything looks. Awesome video -- kudos Ben!! Was very grateful for my time learning at the school!
Great info. Is that a Dewalt 1030?
I believe it is a 1030RA
@@ryderholywonder5864 Didn't look as green as a GWI, but could be. 1030 RA's are gray I think, mine is.
Very good video Wally. You have the place looking great.
Thanks Kevin. I try.
Wow, just wow Wally! I hope to one day come see it in person one day soon. Great job.
You are always welcome Artie !
What a great school, Wally!
Thanks a lot Paul !
Awesome, I hope to see more soon. I bought a copy of your Dad’s book a couple of years ago, and would love to see any Radial Arm Saw operations you’d like to share.
Thank you all for the nice comments. I have to wonder about the 3 dislikes this video has gotten. Why no commentary to go along with the thumbs down ? I would appreciate knowing what you didn't like. Was it my video ? The jig ? The radial arm saw in general ? Or me ? Hitting dislike without a comment is like a hit and run. Thanks.
You can't focus on the dislikes. People dislike videos for the dumbest and most insignificant reasons. Focus on the 180 likes and all the positive comments below.
Forget about the 3 dislikes, today on 2021-06-13 you've reached 222 likes. Greetings from Pretoria, South Africa.
Sometimes when viewing videos on a cell phone a slip of the finger can press the thumbs down button . That could be a possibility. But like others have said . Don't worry about it . Video was very informative.
Who would downvote this? This is pure awesomeness.
someone who was looking for something not related to wood working....obvisely looking for something not found on the channel...
Awesome video, Mr. Son of Sawdust! I am restoring the same saw you are using there.
Is there a place I can view/buy the plans for the Flying Wing jig? I placed my order for the book today.
His book is unavailable Do you sell copies?
Hello, it,s a usefull Jig for a armsaw. Thx for sharing! I have a DeWalt too and this saw will have a flying Jig soon. I saw that you can move the leeft side back. Is the other right one not neccesary for omving back? Much greetings from us in Holland 🌷🌷
I just bought a Craftsman radial arm saw now I am second guessing myself. I am new to Radial Arm saws, and just subscribed to your channel.
I did the same thing. I managed to find an old cast iron armed craftsman since there were no old dewalts in my area. I'm now on round three of setting it up and getting it square and am getting really close. I've had to take parts of it apart and clean out years of old packed sawdust and dirt but it now seems to be locking in at a consistent position. I almost threw it out after I set it up the first time an it wouldn't hold a setting. I think what has to be remembered is that all of these are now old, most are neglected, and most need to be cleaned and adjusted. I may still turf mine if I can't get it perfect but since I only paid $50 for it, and the recall on them from Emerson is $50, I'm not out anything to try and get it right. The tl;dr of all of this is try and get it set up, go through the manual step by step and see if you can make it work for you. If not, on to something that will.
I am waiting for your brothers plans for your fathers Flying Wing Jig. I have some big plans for it when I get it built. Great show.
Awesome 👍
Love this. I just finished my first reading of the Mr. Sawdust book. I have an OK Craftsman that I have finally managed to get into alignment after following a combination of Mr Sawdust, the factory manual, Jon Eakes book and the Delphi forum for DeWalt Radial arm saws. I was determined to get the Craftsman saw functional to finish up some very basic work I am doing right now. My dad built cabinets for my entire childhood on a DeWalt RAS, and I have recently acquired one, but it's apart for reconditioning at the moment. The Mr Sawdust book has a nice description of using a perpendicular fence with a 45 degree. I would guess the wing idea came about as your dad thought about how he could do the cuts even better!
Great information thank you
Super cute. Can’t wait to start my hand tool class in a few weeks!!!
Where can one get a copy of his book?
www.mrsawdust.com
Very clever! Thank you.
ok i dont own a dewalt but i have 2 craftsmen ras. I'd like to make that jig , I looked at your dads book, there you were as a tot hanging out in the shop with dad, then later is the book a young man. Classy you put your dads picture in the frame he made, I don't think he ever thought for a second that's what it would be used for. Your grandkids kids will look at that and enjoy it That's what woodworking is all about stuff that can last generations made from trees that took generations to grow.. Outstanding!! I need the plans!!
He’s adorable Wally! A see a custom rocking horse in his future😉
Cute kid. Get him the Sawdust family signature hat and apron!
This is genius. Would love to see more of your videos keep them coming! Just finished reading your Dad's Mr. Sawdust book and it is fantastic. Actually gluing up a Mr. Sawdust table for my MBF today!
Thank you for the tour! I have seen references to the school but really did not know any more than the name. When the camera was panning along the books, I noticed a copy of one I frequently refer to: "Cabinetmaking and Millwork" ... I have a copy of that book, which I got sometime in the 1970's when I was taking a woodworking "refresher" class through the county school system. At the time I had been away from woodworking for about a decade and had just purchased a Craftsman 10" radial arm saw. (I'm still using the same one.) I don't have as many books in my woodworking library, but almost a quarter of them are completely or partially about the RAS. Including the one by your father, of course.
Very nice, and more versatile than the one I built for myself a long time ago. I also would be interested in a copy of the drawings. Subscribed!
Well that is just PURE GENIUS. Thanks for the video. Now I need to get some overhead support beams and try something like this.
