Martin McAloon of Prefab Sprout; Keeping his and his brother Paddy's legacy Alive
Martin McAloon remains a key figure in the legacy of Prefab Sprout, continuing his tour of acoustic versions of his brother Paddy's songs. He maintains he was only a bass player, but we all know he's been much more than that.

Martin McAloon is a British musician best known as the bassist and founding member of the band Prefab Sprout, formed in 1978 alongside his brother, singer-songwriter Paddy McAloon. While Paddy took on the primary role of writing and vocals, Martin's bass playing became an integral part of the band's distinctive sound, which blends pop, rock, and sophisticated arrangements. P...

    I remember I was at a club and What Do I Do came on, my reaction would of been priceless! I knew I had to find out who it is and I had to own it.! In Australia you could only hear certain types of music on certain radio stations that certain DJ’s would introduce us to. Or the clubs it would be funk clubs, so that’s how I was introduced to a lot of music and we had a music show Countdown that introduced us to all sorts of wonderful artist and genres. I feel Phil knew exactly what he wanted to do, his love for music was his happy place. I’m so glad he never gave up! What a humble man he is! You’re such a great interviewer. Leee John is truly an incredible artist and performer. I was a teenager in the 80s and I have many wonderful memories of dancing with my friends to Imagination tracks at nightclubs. I’m from Australia, so I feel grateful that my brother and I had the opportunity to see Leee John perform in London on one of our trips there and we met him after the show. It was a lovely experience because he was so lovely to us both. I had a huge smile just watching you both chat and just hearing about the top 5 tracks. I remember that Roundtable thing Martin talks about - Elvis Costello was on the panel and he slagged off the song, saying it sounded like Crosby, Stills & Nash. It's always stuck in my mind cos EC was someone I liked and I thought he'd have recognised a good song when he heard one. I think he hadn't quite come out of his abrasive punk-y persona and felt it was his duty to be negative about everyone.

    Definitely one of my favourite bands. Listening to them since 1985 and caught up with Swoon afterwards- the cassette was a prized Christmas present in the days when I measured possessions in albums, cakes and confectionary, usually bought with pocket and paper round money. The lyrics of Paddy McAloon had a big influence on me and helped shape my worldview in the eighties. I never understood why Prefab Sprout was bracketed by some with Deacon Blue because they each have a distinctive sound of of their own. Fellow Kitchenware Records alumni The Kane Gang's albums The Bad And The Low Down World Of The Kane Gang in 1984 and Miracle in 1987 are also worth a mention. They have reformed for three concerts only but unfortunately I will not be able to make any of them. I did see Prefab Sprout in 2000 at Shepherds Bush Empire when I was working in London although Wendy Smith was not with them on the tour- her vocals, much like Lorraine McIntosh's role in Deacon Blue, were a brilliant and vital sounding foil to Paddy McAloon's vocals on their eighties albums. Underrated is the most overused word on You Tube about music but it is true of Prefab Sprout- the deserved critical acclaim was never fully matched by commercial success. Their legacy is secure.

    I had never heard of Toyah until the pandemic. Robert Fripp, on the other hand, has been my favorite guitarist for 50 years, based on his artistic creation King Crimson, and work with the godlike figure Brian Eno. So I was shocked one pandemic day, when I ran into Robert’s posts on Facebook, and he was interacting with us common folk! (Not his description, but mine.) Robert always had a reputation in any article I’ve read of being impatient and arrogant, but his appearances on Facebook changed that image completely. He’s of course brilliant, but also has a clever and understated sense of humor. He then blew open the doors when he appeared on his musical Sunday posts in goth eye black and playing live guitar renditions of simplistic punk, grunge and pop cover songs. Singing the lyrics was this punk rock, fish net and nipple tape woman! What?! This was a campy 180* turn from Robert’s typical image of complicated progressive and experimental compositions,… and it was damned fun too! I had really never known anything about Robert’s personal life, but quickly understood these two were more than bandmates. I couldn’t help but think, “well, good for you Robert!” He’s in his eighties now, and she seems like a fun, musical lady. Then this interview popped up on my RUclips page. I see why Robert added her into his life. Toyah, is obviously bright, attractive and has an open honesty… exemplified by her story here regarding her troubled home life as a child. I felt a kinship with my own childhood of witnessing violence and living in poverty. I’m glad I got to know Toyah in this excellent interview, makes me want to dive into her cultural impact, which sounds like it will be pretty interesting.

    • @popthehistorymakers
      @popthehistorymakers 3 дня назад

      @@WayneThePoet it’s certainly true that their Sunday lunch gained both of them a new audience, and particularly showed a different side to each of them. Toyah of course is well known to Brits of a certain age, part of our musical heritage, and I have to say, not only eloquent, but clearly someone who has wrestled and overcome her demons, not many can speak in that forthright, honest way about their lives. Thx for the comment!

    I know hindsight is everything, but I believe the way they handled the whole Linn situation was the nail in the coffin for the band commercial viability. They wasted all the good will from the fans maintaining the charade, never did a proper live tour, and then when she was really out most people didn't care either way. If they had let her go before The Bridge, and replaced her with a great singer that could do all her parts live and tour, I wonder if they would have made it to this day. Remaining as a trio was never going to work, since Jenny couldn't really pull off those songs live.

    Very insightful interview, thanks. I had no idea they had worked so hard in the beginning. I mean, four years working and living in a small studio, and cleaning oil tanks for a living, that's dedication. Time for an MTV Story, our Steve-Oh. One night in TX we were working passed midnight and CRY was in the playlist. So, during one airing that night, we cued up a huge Smiley Face graphic 🙂and matched the size to the faces in the Video. Then slowly dissolved said Smiley Face in an out (very mindfully and gracefully) to the music. We never got caught that night and never did it again, but it was truly hilarious. ANOTHER Godley and Creme story happened when working at CARLTON TV in St. John's Wood (1988). G&C were in house creating a George Harrison video I believe. What is interesting was the huge spliffs these lads would indulge, where the entire place smelled of the finest herb. We all considered these guys wondrous clients.

    Interesting hearing Toyah talk about the arts scene and community of the day. The Derek Jarman story is fantastic, good on him! Although I grew up on post-punk, ultimately I was always more drawn to Toyah's acting than her music, and the conviction (@ 01:06:00) she has that her albums were *_overtly_* influential I do find to be somewhat delusional tbh. Although some of the earlier music is quite compelling - especially the basslines on _'Sheep Farming..'_ - ultimately I get a kind of theatrical post-Punk _'Rock Follies'_ vibe from it all rather than anything groundbreaking. Perhaps that was down to the fact that she was torn between the theatre and trying to produce serious rock music. Anyway I'm glad she grew a thick skin and believes in herself. That's showbiz (her word).
