    Yes, please do let us see the backwards view of the return trip. These were fantastic trains, and - if they'd been given a chance, might have generated enough passengers to save lines like the S&D; but the powers that be had decided the car was the future! I remember loving to ride on DMUs like this back in the 1960s and 70s - not all of them on rural branch-lines ....

    Gordon is an engine I have a soft spot for, as my mother was raised in Liss, which is where the Longmoor Military Railway terminated. admittedly, she was born after the railway closed, but still. There were attempts to preserve a section of the LMR, but local opposition meant that it never got off the ground. Some of the engines currently in the Engine House have been there since it opened (from memory I think they're Gordon, no. 47383 and no. 80079, maybe even 48773), the others have come in over time. It is a useful place to store locos that are so far down the overhaul queue they might not run again. Some engines which were initially in there have been overhauled as well. For instance, GWR 15xx no.1501 was in the museum when it first opened in 2008 before being overhauled and restored to traffic; she's currently under overhaul, her boiler ticket having expired in January 2023. I imagine you read all the various stories of the engines, but my favourite is probably 48773 hitting a camel! She was also stationed on the Longmoor Military Railway for some time after WW2, before being sold to BR. She was then mistaken for a WD 2-8-0 and given the number 90733, before the mistake was rectified and she was assigned 48773. Funnily enough, that number would be given to the one surviving WD 2-8-0, which had never even worked in the UK before preservation!

    • @ph4ntomtr4in
      @ph4ntomtr4in 14 дней назад

      Thanks for your comment. The first time I entered the Engine House I was overwhelmed with how much stock they had. I adored the tank engines and the Ivatt Class, but Gordon was probably the most impressive one there. It's a shame the railway wasn't preserved, but there seems to be growing hope for the future with Steam and preservation having a strong resurgence. I tried to read as much as possible, but that story was really interesting. I think I somewhat remember reading a little about it.

    Bristol is nice. I considered going to university there to study Geography (the grades needed were too ambitious for me, so it was always a long shot; in the end I went to Bangor instead). My godmother lives not too far away from Bristol, near Yate, so I have been into the city on a few occasions, most notably when they had the various Gromit statues dotted around the place (my favourite was Isambark Kingdog Brunel, who they could've put in a few places but ultimately chose to put him outside Temple Meads), and the Shaun the Sheep statues a year or two later.

      I studied Animation in Bristol (I should really get back into it) and from there the city took my heart. I have made many friends in the city and no doubt I'll make many more. An old school friend of mine went to Bangor to learn politics. Sadly I don't talk to him nowadays but I hope he is doing well. The Gromit Trails are really fun.

    • @dominicbarden4436
      @dominicbarden4436 14 дней назад

      @@ph4ntomtr4in Somehow, studying animation in Bristol just seems right, what with Aardman being based there! Bangor was great, and well, being on the doorstep of Snowdonia, it was perfect for Geography! I usually had a a fair journey to get there though, travelling by train. Often at the start of term my parents would drop my sister off at boarding school in Shrewsbury and I'd take the train from there. On the way back I'd either be picked up from there or Smethwick Galton Bridge or just head all the way back to Kidderminster. Coming home for Christmas in my second year was an odyssey though. I think there were engineering works on the North Wales Coast Line between Rhyl and Chester, and there was also chaos from flooding which had affected the line to Wrexham and therefore Shrewsbury. That wasn't an issue, I could go via Crewe instead and still end up at Smethwick. One of my flatmates was in the same boat as me, only instead of going to Kidderminster he was going further, down to Pershore. We got on the train at Bangor and it terminated at Rhyl. We then had some chaos as the replacement bus hadn't arrived. The staff were brilliant, they were trying to call taxis, sorting people out into groups, etc. We eventually got a bus to Chester, then found that trains were being cancelled there so we had to take another bus to Crewe. Then we got on a train, but got stuck at Wolverhampton! In the end I called my dad and he picked me up from there. My flatmate meanwhile stuck it out! He did manage to get home eventually. The whole thing took from around 3pm until somewhere between 9 and 10!

    Really good video of what the weekend was really like not just trains passing by. Lots more to see than I expected with the house shops and police station. A lot of effort putting on those displays and some real interesting posters I have no seen before. My Father was in the blitz in Sheffield he did not say much about it apart from how lucky their house was not hit, others around were destroyed. In the shelter you had no idea what you would find after the raid, he said bombs hit every alternate street and you could tell if it would be your street next or over the top to the next but could not tell which house from the shelter they had to use. There are things I remember from years ago that were still used in our home on display brings back memories of what little we had back then and how house work has changed.

      Thank you for your comment. I really learned a lot from the 1940's experience. As someone who was born in the 1990's it was a real culture shock to see what life was like that time. I would hear stories from my grandparents about how countryside towns and villages managed, especially with new additions to the household and the friendships formed long after. What striked me as powerful was the resilience of the people to carry on as best you could up until the very end. There was so much to take away from that day.

      @@ph4ntomtr4in It is hard to imagine how people coped. It is sad our community spirit is not as strong as it was back then, people coming together to help one another. Both my parents had experience of life through the war My Father as I said in Sheffield and my Mother as a land girl working on farms in North East. Quite a contrast. Neither had any of life's luxuries, Mother got a job that meant moving to Sheffield to try and get a better life. For a young lady that was very ambitious. It took years of working and saving before we had our own house. We don't realise how lucky we are now and should remember those days through events like this.

      I just discovered last week that footplate experiences were a thing. I hear they can be a little pricy?

      I did. It was amazing to live a childhood dream. 😊 It's interesting because Lady Nan is quite an easy train to drive as it has fewer controls than larger trains. But I don't know if that is to do with it being initially a shunter engine.
