The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we’re gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, ’cause that’s what it does. It’s a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed. And if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new paradigm: the earth plus plastic. The earth doesn’t share our prejudice toward plastic. Plastic came out of the earth. The earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted plastic for itself. Didn’t know how to make it, needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, “Why are we here?” Plastic… asshole.” ― George Carlin

"There are huge non climate effects of carbon dioxide which are overwhelmingly favorable which are not taken into account. To me that's the main issue that the earth is actually growing greener. This has been actually measured from satellites the whole earth is growing greener as a result of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. So it's increasing agricultural yields, it's increasing the forests, it's increasing all kinds of growth in the biological world and that's more important and more certain than the effects on climate." ~Freeman Dyson, Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

In 1700's America it was common for young men to be encouraged to think & write about what it meant to them to be a man. We should not be surprised that culture produced our Founding Fathers. We still benefit from that generation's self identity. It is time to renew encouraging each of us to think & write about what it means to be an adult.

"God intentions are the path to Hell." Was once so commonly said, it became a cliché. Today, when I say that to the under 50, I almost always get the blank expression of nonrecognition. Not surprising. Most have graduated from a system overvaluing intentions and undervaluing results.

He makes some very good points. But he is not correct about plastics, ignore details of plastic pollution, microplastics being an important omission. He says nothing about disposal of nuclear waste. Why is it ok for polar bears to kill seals, but wrong for man to kill seals. His climatic data based upon deep time evolution theory are not confirmable, and of no value. But much data from the past few thousand years is reliable.

At the present time, we have a catastrophic situation Climate Change. This is from the combustion reaction of fossil fuels. This is all about the extreme wealth for of the corporate class. There is a reaction that is at the quantum scale that will split water for a Hydrogen liquid-phase non ideal plasma. The crux of this reaction is a Nobel Prize winning phenomena, “negative refractive index meta material”. The key meta material is bismuth ferrite that creates a blue shift in the energy created by reaction. This reaction is complicated, but the results are the creation of Hydrogen. Hydrogen combustion produces creates a near equal amount of energy Weight/weight as gasoline.

It's a bit strange that Jacobsen talks about things you can do with excess energy, like store it, use it for industry, etc. but frames it as if only energy generated from renewables can do that. Of course, nuclear power plants can also do all those things with energy at times when electricity demand on the grid is lower (e.g. high-noon in high-solar areas). And with nuclear, things like industrial heat, district heating/cooling, etc are more direct b/c the energy comes out in the form of heat to begin with. These arguments of his would work for a 100% nuclear + batteries scenario just as well.
