2021 Mazda6 Internal Rear Seat and Trunk Release
#richardtait #mazda #mazda6 #tutorial
Did you know that there is a "secret" compartment behind the rear seat of the 3rd Generation Mazda6 (2013-2021) that allows you to unlatch the rear seat and then release the trunk? The trunk release in these cars is electric and if there is a dead battery the trunk will not open that way. If the trunk cannot be opened, then the rear seat cannot be put flat. Join me as I show you in this video how to get all of these things done.

Mine has about 30k miles on it... Can i turbocharge this engine?
@@j.27-d6o You have an L5 with only 30,000 miles?!? You can turbocharge any engine you like, but it will cost you more than you think and even more than you plan for. There are several companies that do kits for the L3, L5, Duratec 23 and Dutatec 25 (the Ford versions). You can try your luck with the of them. But remember, no kit will ever be 100% plug and play. There will always be some degree of machining or modification. Good luck, but I wouldn't do it, especially with a car with only 30k. That thing needs to be preserved.
@RichardTait1977 yeah bought it from a family friend. I plan to keep it for a good bit. I saw a guide to boosting the 03-05 versions and figured it would make the car a lot more fun. The writer seems to have been running 7psi on the mazdaspeed6 turbo (he has a regular 03 mazda6) for years so I don't think it would stress the engine out at all
Very informative video! By the way is there options within Forscan to set that my side mirrors dip downwards when the reverse gear is engaged as well as mirrors folding when the car is locked/unlocked. 2010 Mazda 3/Axela
Thanks for the compliment. I have never noticed this feature you mentioned on the Mazda6 and I have no experience with the Mazda3. That said, if it is programmable but isn't in a drop-down menu in FORScan or Mazda VCM II , you would have to do it by using hexadecimal codes, which again, I have no experience with. Messing with that level of the ECU is dangerous and can quickly turn your car into a rather large paperweight. There isn't a lot of information out there for this kind of modification because most people aren't willing to experiment with their daily drivers.
@@RichardTait1977 alright thank you for the info. I’ll stick to just adding the smart turn as it’s a very useful feature
This solution really fix my problem both random alarm goes off and i-stop not working properly on my 2013 cx5. Thank you.
@@galsf Glad it worked out. Thanks for watching.
bought(brand new in Jan 2010) Mazda 3 sport gs with this 2.5 and a 6 speed manual currently has 306 xxx kms no major issues and still going strong (knock on wood)
Hi. Very nice tutorial. But may I know how the proper check of level of the automatic transmission fluid thru dipstick in this Mazda 6 2013?
@@neilcempron4263 The transmission should be at operating temperature and the engine running. Remove the dipstick and look at where the level is. It should be between the H and L marks. No lower than the L and no higher than the H. I prefer to have it sitting at the H mark, so that is what I aim for.
@RichardTait1977 Do I need to run a few kilometers or is a 5 to 10 minute warm-up enough to get the operating temperature?
@neilcempron4263 Run the engine until the radiator fan cycles on and off at least twice.
@@RichardTait1977 I forgot to measure the transmission fluid I removed. So I warmed up my Mazda 6 2013 for 10 minutes before measuring the level with the dipstick. I put in 4.2 liters. Did I do the correct thing? The dipstick shows 65°C between Low and High. I do not have a computer or thermometer to check the temperature of my transmission fluid. Did I do the correct thing?
@neilcempron4263 You will be fine.
Thanks for this video! So informative. Wanted some more info about the engine, for servicing purposes. But at least now i know what exact model and size it is so i can continue my research!
@@TFLSTUDIO88 Thanks for watching. The service info of the engine can be found at the message board I hang out at, noteownersclub.co.uk. I keep track of things there on a thread I started and I always include part numbers on whatever is changed. I've also confirmed a very good alternative to the very expensive OEM spark plugs. See you there!
Thanks for sharing this finding. I have a gen 3 Mazda 6 with the same issue, the alarm stops triggering if I leave the hood popped. However in the gen 3 the hood latch is much more inaccessible as there is a bar across the top that blocks off most of the mechanism, I can't see the 2x10mm bolts. Was hoping to find a video on how to access the switch on mine, hope it doesn't involve removing the grill.
@@ArcKwill I haven't actually heard of an alarm issues with the 3G 6s before. This is new information. This could be the beginning of a similar set of problems for 3G owners as the cars age. Thanks for this. I also own a 3G and this is something I need to brace for.
@@RichardTait1977 mine is a 2015 right hand side driver, if that matters. Do tag me if you ever get to making a video on disassembling the latch for the 3G
@@ArcKwill The 3G cars are more universally similar than with the 2G so things should be similar. I'll tag you when the time comes.
Hi, I was interested to watch this video as I like the Note and might consider buying one. Like most who have looked, I am well aware of the JATCO CVT's reputation, but I am also aware (at least anecdotally), having done some more in-depth research, that if the transmission isn't abused and the fluid changed regular, they are actually fine. So I am interested to hear how the CVT has been over the year since the video was posted. Also interested about your transmission cooler, is this something readily available where you are (I'm in Scotland)or is it something made specifically or adapted from another car?
@@badbusdriver7160 Thanks for watching. Let me answer your questions. The CVT has been flawless in my hands. Bear in mind that I have not driven more than about 9000 km in the year since I've had it. That means I haven't changed the fluid and filters again since. That will be done at the next engine oil change, perhaps in another year! The car has been mechanically sound. I've had to do work on the air con, and I've changed the spark plugs a number of times. Yes...in a year. This is because I was experimenting with potential alternatives to the very expensive original items which are amazingly expensive. I believe I've found a great one but I'm still in the evaluation stage. So far, this engine seems very hard on plugs. Even the original iridium plugs require changing every 60k km or so. The transmission cooler is a universal part I found on Amazon. Any of them will do to be honest, as long as it will fit behind the grille and bumper. I went for this particular model because it was small in size. After seeing how it fit, I could have gone larger in every direction, but that's not necessary. A larger cooler would only mean having to add more fluid to compensate for the extra volume of the cooler itself. The cooler is not the only thing you will need. You will also need a 4 port heat exchanger from a Nissan Sentra (also on Amazon) because the stock heat exchanger is a 2 port. The extra 2 ports allow the transmission fluid to flow to the cooler and back. The stock exchanger only allows radiator coolant in and out, but not fluid. I have documented all the parts I've used at an awesome resource for Note owners, noteownersclub.co.uk. Head over there, sign up, read what the owners have to say and then make your decision. I could go on further here but you have more to gain from that experience. I am a member there as well so I can chime in if needs be. Remember, my car is built in Japan. A UK car will probably have been built in the UK in Sunderland and will be of different quality. Many cars in the Irish Republic are grey imports built in Japan, as are one or two UK cars. See you there!
@@RichardTait1977 Thanks for that comprehensive reply, very interesting and helpful🙂👍
The rest of my speakers stopped working around the same time this started, would this be an issue with the wiring? Still pops only from this top speaker
The speakers in these cars are really the weakest link. All my door speakers have gone bad. I've replaced two so far and the other original two just failed about a month ago but I haven't replaced those yet. When I do, they will NOT be replaced with Bose. I will be using aftermarket 2 ohm speakers. They are widely available now because other manufactures are now getting wise to the fact that Bose is a garbage company that makes crappy equipment. All the sell is hype. I've said it before, Mazda needs to move away from them completely and use a Japanese manufacturer like Nakamichi.
Can anyone help me find the location of the engine number on one of these engines?
The engine number on the L5 is on the firewall side of the engine, just above the transmission. Not the most convenient of places.
Heya, How do I access the front center speaker? Am trying to with mine and it is impossible
You have to remove the centre console facia and then remove the centre vents. Then you will see all the wiring and so on for the centre speaker. It sounds like a lot but with practice you could remove it in 15 minutes! Search here for "How to remove factory stereo Mazda 6 2009 -2013" and there is a very good video on how to remove the stereo and it also shows you how to remove the vents as well. I would do a video, but though I still have access to this car, I gave it to my daughter who is away for school now. Good luck!
Hi Richard, Thank you for your informative video. my name is Attila ( from HU). I bought Mazda 6 with this engine a month ago and I have been meaning to ask you whether this engine has DMF or not as a guy looked into it based on VIN and he said yes. However, I asked a clutch expert on web and his answer was this: it has solid flywheel. I think you know the correct answer.
@@SeresAttila-w6o Thanks for the trust you have in my knowledge. I can confirm, the Mazda6 has a DMF (dual mass flywheel). This is not really a unique situation because about half of modern manual transmissions have them.
Thank you so much man. I have also a problem with door lock on this car. You are the one who made such detail video about this issue.
What year is this? Auto or manual? I have a 2009 2.5 l manual and I'm pretty sure I don't have a dipstick. Owners manual says the break fluid is the lubricant for the clutch and the hole for gear oil is on the front of the trans
@@chrismoss875 This is a 2013 automatic. It sounds as if you have a manual. Manual transmission models do not have transmission dipsticks.

You can remove it, but nothing that uses the speakers will work. The stereo won't work and neither will the Bluetooth.

Some commentary or explanation would go a LONG way.
Does the 1st generation mazda6 also has this feature? (2005-2007) thanks!
The 1G has a similar feature which is called a "Lane-change signal". The owner's manual says: "Move the lever slightly toward the direction of the change―until the indicator flashes― and hold it there. It will return to the off position when released." The 2G will automatically flash 3 times and then cancel all on its own, while the 1G is manually operated. I hope that helps.

If anybody is going to be Changing or adding transmission fluid to a 2013 Mazda. You'd better go to the dealership and get the right kind. Or else you're gonna ruin your transmission in a couple thousand miles.
@@Widdly_Wah Not sure where you get your information from but I stand by my statements. I have changed my transmission fluid myself with either Beck/Arnley or Idemitsu Mazda-specific fluids and with over 150,000 miles of flawless operation. If you have to top up your transmission fluid any at all you are having a problem that the fluid won't and can't fix. If the fluid is replaced with either of these two and it fails, the problem is between the seat and the steering wheel and not with the fluid.
@@RichardTait1977 I meant when you drain it without dropping the pan
@@Widdly_Wah I have never dropped the pan on any transmission that I've changed the fluid on. It's not necessary if you change the fluid frequently. The risk of creating a leak because you have warped the pan, cross threaded or incorrectly torqued a bolt, or got RTV sealant in the pan is too great.
@@RichardTait1977 Good to know.
Skill issue. Theres a filter In there for a reason. no matter how often you change the fluid tho your still getting gear wear & small metal fragments. Now the magnet in the pan helps grab the smaller fragment that pass threw but still eventually if u never drop the pan filter can clog up & reduce flow its not a good idea to just drain n fill everytime. Sure most of the time but id say 60000 miles or so maybe less depending u should change that filter. So if ur changing fluid every 30k the second fluid exchange should include new filter. If you know what you are doing it's not that hard to reseal a pan & ur comment tells me you wait to long to service if your pans are frozen on there to the point you bend the mating surface of the pan. So if that's the case it's not hard to either re-ping a pan or replace. But to each there own.

How many watts are the front door bottom speakers?
Unfortunately, I have no idea. What I can tell you is that the amp is 265 Watts with 10 speakers. Whether that means 26.5 watts each or it's split up in done other way remains to be seen. For the record, those speakers are 2 ohm impedance, so you can do with that what you will. Bose is not the most transparent of companies to begin with, and no information about the specs are actually written on the speaker.
@@RichardTait1977 damn. I don't know what replacement speakers to get. I wanted to go aftermarket
@@ramelite Go ahead. I've given you all the info you need. Get some 2 ohm speakers that are rated around 300 watts and are 6.5 inches in diameter. Get the Mazda wiring harness to keep things tidy. You can find everything above on the usual sites for decent money.

Are you able to say if the factory cooler was bypass or connected in series
The cooler that came with the car only had fittings for coolant. It was completely removed and replaced with one that has fittings for both coolant and transmission fluid. The fittings for transmission fluid now feed to an external transmission cooler. So to answer your question, the factory cooler was neither bypassed nor connected in series.
Hey Richard! Can you please share a video on how to uninstall and reinstall a BCM on your Mazda 6 with step by step instructions? I have a 2011 Mazda 6 and the BCM went and now the remote controller won’t work and I need to unlock my car with my key.

Go ahead and try that. But what that will do is you will lose functionality of the stereo and Bluetooth as well. If what you want is peace of mind for now, that's a good solution. If you can't find the fuse or if it also takes out another feature that you do want, then just get behind the panel like I show in the video and unplug the amplifier.

that's the engine oil dipstick, you pull it straight out
No, it's the trans fluid with a 10mm bolt.
你好
Thank you I could not figure out why it would not come down and did not realize the light covers actually hold it up
Ask me how I figured it out 😂
I am able to unscrew the 10-mm bolt from the above the engine, but I`m afraid to not being able to put back the dipstick back after removing it. Is it easy with so little space? If I`m unable to put it back, I don't think it would be a great idea to drive the car. I am baffled at no drawing, photos or videos helping with this. All we have are videos like yours showing a guy removing a dipstick, but we have no visual of the removal itself.
What I'm about to say may hurt your feelings, but it needs to be said. If you have any fear of this procedure you should not attempt it. You clearly do not have the adventurous spirit that working on your own car requires. Removing a 10mm bolt and pulling a plastic stick from a hole and replacing it in the reverse order is neither rocket science nor nuclear engineering. I have zero problem with you calling it quits and leaving your car to the four winds. In fact it is probably better off that way. But if you read the comments, you will find that others have benefited from this video because what people are looking for most of all is the courage to do what they are already prepared to do. Find the courage and stop complaining. Good luck.
You’ll need a 10mm nut to unscrew the bolt.
"promosm"
What is the part the hood latch is connected to. Is that the air inlet duct? Those plastic pieces that hold the 10mm bolts broke and the hood is wonky now :/
That's a bracket that's part of the radiator support. The air intake duct (to the right and just in frame) is bolted to the support. If that bracket has broken then you may have to get creative because I think that is all one piece of composite material.

@@RichardTait1977 Now, pretty privilege does play a part when I’m at the junkyard😂!! Sometimes I don’t always have the right tools. I’m always going to find a way to do things myself. I love my first little car, I hope it last for years. Plus I don’t want a car note !!
More challenging task I would like to do include: changing the radio/head unit and updating it to be more modern, like an Apple CarPlay screen ( my car is a base model so it doesn’t come with the fancy bells and whistles), fixing the lock button feature; my car will unlock(sometimes it will act funny unlocking too)but it won’t relock all of the doors unless I do so manually. If I can I would like a key fob, don’t know if it’s possible to do on my car. Lastly , I would like to change the speakers
I just read that the crank is also forged. Is that incorrect?
There is in fact a lot of debate as to whether the L5 has a forged crankshaft, but I have since done some research and based on official documents from Mazda USA, I can confirm that this glorious engine has a forged steel crankshaft "for utmost durability". So yes, that is correct. No surprises there, really, because this engine really has some well-thought out, almost over-engineered features.
Hey, I have a 2009 Mazda 6 and I was wondering where the SD card is because I am having an issue where it says a program cannot be read. Please consult to a dealer. Ever since i put in my new battery
You haven't said where you are from, but this matters, since the North American and World cars are vastly different. Since I am more familiar with the North American cars, I will speak to them. For the 2009 model year, the Mazda6 did not use an SD card for the navigation system. It used a map disc that was inserted into the CD player. Try removing the disc, cleaning it, and reinserting it. If that fails, perhaps the lens of the player needs cleaning. If all of that fails, then perhaps you need a new disc. Frankly, I wouldn't even waste my time. Google Maps is far better than anything any manufacturer puts in a car, updates are frequent, and are free.
Remember dont read it upside-down
