Durston X-mid 1p vs Outdoor Vitals Fortius 1p tent! Which is the best option?
I wanted to do this video to compare two great budget, ultra light backpacking tent options. Both of these tents are under $300, both weigh under 2lbs, both set up with trekking poles, and both are made by companies who really get out and test their gear. This video will go over my first impressions of both, what I see as the positives and negatives of both, and then show myself at 6’2” on how I fit in them with a sleeping pad. I’ll link the manufacturer’s sites below if you want to check them out!

Outdoor Vitals Fortius 1p tent. Is this just a Gossamer Gear copy or an upgrade???
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.Год назад
Thanks to some amazing fortune, I was able to get my hands on the OV Fortius 1p tent to test. I have had my eye on this tent for a while, and I’ve really just thought it looked like a copy of the ever popular gossamer gear the one tent. I have another video on my channel already reviewing that tent which I will link below. If you’ve watched it, then you will know that I really do love that tent...

Thanks for the comparison. Well done. I have the Gossamer gear the one. Great tent, lots of room, condensation, an issue which I made manageable with a micro fibre cloth. One issue you rightly mentioned is the wind resistance, which is poor. On top of that is the issue I have not seen mentioned is that the floor of the tent is bigger at the hed end than the foot end. This brings the problem of positioning the tent in a windy condition. You do not want the wind catching the back of the tent with the opening. It will act as a sail. Sometimes, your sleeping position is with your head lower than your feet when on oneven ground. With shifting strong winds you'll might have a problem blowing up the tent. Durston might be a better choice for those conditions. No difference which is head end or geometric, as far wind conditions go. For mild weather, Gossamer is great for me. I think of buying the Durston, perhaps the pro, but considerably more expensive.

Thank you for the review, lots of useful detail and thoughts. Have to say i like the fact you can order this without stakes/pegs. I've accumulated so many with other tents that i didn't need any more, and being able to drop the price that little bit by opting out of them was good for me. Also prefer the shock cord idea over toggles as the latter always come loose on me (but as someone else said, the inter now appears to have magnets, too). I'd ordered mine before watching this, and i look forward to checking it out once it arrives. Thanks again.

I have the 60L and getting ready to purchase a 40L still love the pack the only things I do not like are the zippers. The hip pocket zippers are just about impossible to close without 2 hands and the main zipper is worthless (for me) because I use a pack liner. It just makes it harder to get to your gear with a liner. Still the best pack I’ve owned.

Trekking poles are a separate item that most hikers and backpackers use. Basically they are adjustable height walking sticks. They are great at taking pressure off your knees and ankles while hiking for miles. This type of tent saves weight by not using a regular pole structure but uses trekking poles which most backpackers already have with them. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the excellent review! I looked up the specs and noticed that the floor area of the XMid is 20 sq. feet (90’ L x 32’ W) while the Fortius has floor area of about 17.1 sq. feet (88’ L x 28’ W). I was initially confused when you said that the XMid felt more cramped on the inside, but then I realized that was because of the bug netting. Is that because the bug netting hangs down more than the solid wall on the Fortius? Also, did you find that the higher floor area in the XMid was noticeable? Thanks again for the very helpful videos!

The dipole is made to be tip up. But you might be able to flip them. I’ve had a couple tents that way and never had any issues with critters chewing on the handles. But I know it is a concern.
