I usually just leave the gates open, you can set up easy kill zones that way with your sentries. put an autocannon in the rear with a couple mortars and you can basically just sit back and let the majority of the mission play itself while you deal with the big guys

It's generally pretty easy to avoid so long as you're using it as the dropships are coming in, that way it'll target enemies while they're further away. Then as long as you're keeping the small fry at bay it'll just sit there once there's nothing left to liberate lol Though yeah, I do agree you gotta be careful with the laser on those missions.
