Being bathed by girls (14) twice his age at (7) what’s that about? That place on Cuckoo Ave is weird. His mum was placed in St Bernard’s in Ealing Hosp- the treatment centre for the mentally disturbed. (Still running till date) Safe to say Ye old boy Charlie did not have a great Hanwell experience.

If you wish to do a bit of reading, Then Ealing Library service has six copies of Ealing Walkabout by local author Kate McEawan. Whilst not perhaps up to academic quality, she never the less gives quick walk-through of the borough’s history.

Ealing Common is a prescious memory to me but I hadn't known the history you detail! I lived opposite the Common in what was then a prestigious career woman's residential hostel run by the YWCA. At that time I was a conference organiser in central London. One of my friends from Sussex used to visit and we'd walk on the Common and have a drink in the Grange pub.

I recall being told it being a particularly ornate water tower because Queen Victoria would pass by on the train en route to the Isle of Wight. If this is true, i do not know.

I lived in Ludlow Road, Brentham Garden Suburb to give it its official name - from birth in 1949 to 1972. Ludlow Road is literally a stones throw away from the house in Pitshanger Lane where Fred Perry lived, and a similar short distance away from Brentham Club that has been a popular sports and social centre for many years.

Have no documentry evidence for the reason for the ship. But lets break it down. 1) It is Elzabithan-ish in style. 2) Clock tower 1937 3) In 1936 Thomas Humphrey Paget submitted a design for the obverse of the half crown but ended being used for the 1937 half penny until decimalisation The design features the Elzabithan galleon the Golden Hind. (ref: Royal Mint Museum et. al.) 4) Paget was a sculptor admired for his skill for two dimensional art. An outstanding designers of medals and coins both for British and overseas currencies. The Weather vane is two dimensional, coins are two dimentional. 5) During the First World War, Paget served with the Royal Naval Voluntary Reserve (RNVR). Therefore, if he is indeed the artist this may hint as to ‘why a ship’. 6) Paget was an artist known to the Establishment and they like to stick with devils they already know. I rest my suppositiononal case me lord. Post script: It may have originaly looked like the three masted Goldern Hind but the aerodynamic drag when mounted on a centre mast (of three) would have had it facing the wind like a traditional Weather “Cock’. With the sails shown full and flags flying towards bow, it has to point away from wind to make nautical sense. Hence the need for modification resulting in the loss of a rear mast and foreshortening of hull aft of the centre mast.

Their used to be access from the canal to the asylum mortary which was on the west side of the Garden of Rest next to the dock (which is now filled in) and several yards before the hospital canal dock ( dock not lock) entrance itself. To the east of the mortary was the hospital’s burial ground.
