How To Conquer Artist Block
The books mentioned in this video-
The War Of Art- amzn.to/4gJpz3Y
How To Do Nothing- amzn.to/3TOXsGT
In this video, I give my thoughts on how to conquer artist block. As usual, it's a complex answer, but I believe it will be helpful and actionable.
This is my final video in this Q&A session. I filmed this in the spring and life kept me from getting to this until now-- almost 6 months later. Yikes.

This is a little video I made of my time in Austin in 2024 for the Sessions Tattoo Educational (where I gave a seminar!) and the Austin Tattoo Invitational . It was a magical time for everyone involved. This video is just documenting my experiences there. Something for me and those close to me to look back on. I can't wait for next year! The FULL PROCESS of a Wolf Tattoo Over 3.5 Hours, Set to Relaxing Music

This is a tattoo of a wolf with a skull tied to its head on a forearm, done in color. I made it at Heart Tattoo on Tampa, FL. I plan on filming more of these, and doing a long Timelapse version with a voiceover for my upcoming Patreon. Look out for the link eventually in this de...

Looking at this little RUclips trend, I decided to follow suit to the extreme and distill my best hard-earned life advice into five seconds. However, such a short video deserves a more detailed description: -Nobody's paying attention to you For the most part, people (especially strangers) are so involved in whats in their own heads, almost no one's going to notice what you do, and even fewer wi...

Acryla gouache advice

I made this video to help my coworker Chloe get started using Holbein Acryla gouache while I was working on a painting on wood. I thought it was a good enough basic breakdown that I'd share it publicly. The Process Of Making Ceramic Palettes
This is so inspiring ❤❤❤❤
I need to do sketches as much as I can.
thank you, perfect vídeo
this video is a gem in the rough of sugary fast paced clickbait art advice content
Love you David!!!
Love you too! 🩵🙏🏼🩵
Thanks David! Love your work and love seeing your process!
Thanks for the kind words and for checking it out! 🩵
Cheers for this on a Sunday and any day, Dave!
Thanks! 🙏🏼 happy Sunday.
@@davidbruehl happy Sunday! 🤘🏽
I'll Never start using those new fairy wand tattoo pens. Coil machines are all I'll ever use. These new tattoo pens are for millennials who dont know anything about tattooing. And thats the cold hard truth.
You found me out! 🤐
Really cool video. Great generalisation on sketching and drawing.
Thank you! Cheers!
Unfortunately, drawing what I like is beyond my abilities. 😢
You can do it! It takes desire and practice. I know you can do it-believe you can and you will be able to do it. Start small, draw some trees, practice perspective with lines and rulers, then try drawing what you see. Use a grid to help you with placement-you can do this!
Love listening what you think about needle cartridges
this video man, quick but a true tresure, spechless about the things you imprinted on my mindm thanks a lot
That's call "iterative drawing" btw and It's an awesome learning technique. Thanks for the advice!
🎉
Clean stuff
If You fear death, You will not live. Do what God gave You as Your talent and develop it to its highest form. Try to be "gottgerecht". Apotheosis
But I just paid attention to you.
We are paying attention to one another. You are heard, but feel free to repeat yourself over and over.
But... I'm only 54.
Roger that. Buying milk over and over.
Hahaha love it
Needed this
Glad it resonated
Im going to download this and play it daily
That's awesome
Yep perfect 👌
but doing the things i need to do over and over (going to work) is the reason i'm unhappy. i want freedom.
get a job you like, save more money, keep the goal in mind , take breaks , see the bright side... these are all things you can do if you NEED to work , otherwise live jobless some people make it work for them. you dont have to have a froaml 9-5 40 hours a week job to live . and you never know if you find your passion and then monetize it that way
Well said. It's about redefining what the things you need to do really are.
Clickbait title. I did not go from 20 to -35 years old. 😪
😭
But that's exactly the problem, no one is paying attention to me.
Then your hard positive action is to reach out to others, or to work on self-validation.
Try not filing an income-tax return.
I said this to many peopIe when I was quite young and always received stunned looks. It's very true, though. Many peopIe waste a lot of time worried about what peopIe are thinking about them and then reaIize they were never thinking of you at all. They have their own lives.
Thanks David. This is awesome. I’d love a print of that. Won’t be at sessions but I wish everyone a very awesome time.
I will have prints available soon. The seminar will eventually be a course available online.
@@davidbruehl I’m excited 🤩
Great advice. Thanks man
Glad it was helpful!
Good video David. I'll try the 100 sketches challenge. Oddly, I worked backwards in my career. I started at finished drawings (many taking 200-300 hours) and did that for the first 16 years of my career. In 2018, I wanted to learn to create quality drawings faster. I spent most of that year creating drawings that took about 4 days. Then I started doing 10 minute sketches. Now, I'm beginning to push back upwards with 2 hour sketches. It's certainly made me better in many areas.
Wow, that's awesome! 👏🏻 Thank you
Stumbled across your channel last night. I'm an artist who's learning to draw flash. Your video on ways to improve on flash and drawing was a complete relief for me. It gave me an overwhelming feeling of calm. Your videos are overwhelmingly calming and genuine. Please keep up the amazing work and posts. Big UP to you mate!
Thanks! Got really busy with some family stuff since that video, but I'm back on a schedule again, so more coming soon.
gonna start right now!
Excited to hear about your progress
great advice, thanks!
You bet!
I think I may have to try doing some longer/more developed drawings, but I have this stupid fear that it's not going to work and I end up "wasting" time 😐
There's a book called "Art and Fear" that you might find helpful. 🩵
So so so excited for the shirt 🤍
This was amazing advice, so short, so to the point. Just quietly inspiring and empowering. Thank you very much. 🤗
Thank you!
I have a couple of your books, they're so usefull when I am trying to find something different or unique to draw and look forward to more of your media in regards to painting. Thank you for being such a kind and approachable artist. I admire the hell out of you.
OMG thank you so much!!!
What’s up David love the video when it comes to drawing from flash books is that fine to do and how do you make it original? Thanks for the advice
Yes absolutely. It's flash. It's meant to be copied and learned from. I'd suggest doing that alongside observational drawing. Also, when you trace flash, you can trace it by sketching over top of it. Change anything in the design to improve it any way you'd like, then trace your final lines from your sketch. You'll learn more that way and really make the design yours.
@@davidbruehl I love how you mentioned you still take inspo from flash and content of various backgrounds
Excellent points on tracing and how to implement the tool into learning :)
Thanks! I think tracing gets a bad rap, so I wanted to clarify how it can be used as a positive tool for growth.
Great video & super curious about the steel driver now. Loving direct drive longer stroke rotaries these days. All the nuances of each machine are so interesting & informative of each other.
Thanks! I like the steeldriver a lot. Closest thing I've used to the DMC, which I had loved
Thanks for sharing. I love those pastel type colours you used.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great advice. Thanks!
You bet!
Best advice ive got compared to the 100s of videos ive watched 😂
Glad it was helpful
Wonderful advice. Love seeing all the sketches, the tree “people” stunning! 🥰
Thanks so much! 😊
Thank you for making this video! I’m so glad I came across it. I’m in my apprenticeship and have recently progressed to tattooing others. As a result I feel burned out creatively; I have to create to attract more potential clients but I’m not enjoying what I draw at all. Your perspective is something I needed to hear. Thank you.
You are so welcome! Absolutely
I really liked this video, thank you
I'm so glad!
I learned on a rotary ..home made. Pushed ink with that machine for like 2 years ..then switched to a coil machine . was told your not a real tattoo artist ..because yiur using a rotary ..tought myself to use a coil machine ..now 20 years after i put tattooing aside. I have picked up a few different tyoes of rotary machines ..very big difference from a coil machine. I could never do soild traditinal work with a rotary ..always a prison style black n grey ish type of style . this is gonna be a hard change ..i never thought i would say i enjoy a coil over a rotary ..i enjoy a line that a coil pushes ..but enjoy how much more control i have with a rotary ...stay tuned 😂
I.make my own coils ,and have for 15 years ,and don't care for rotarys ,❤ coils forever
I was a professional tattoo artist also. I left the industry many years ago but school ( college / graphic design) could never teach me what tattooing did in terms or sketching and drawing.
Street shop tattooing can be like bootcamp for drawing abilities, for sure. That was my experience
Love the 100 small drawings exercise, you will get a lot of exp doing that very quickly
Absolutely. Glad you like it
Thanks for the tips. These are good advices but I’ll also advise not to just sketch too much. I often do that, so often times I don’t really do full finished multiple hours artwork. Spend about some hours sketching and then draw based on what has been learned sketching
I got into that at the end of the video. One hits a point where the sketching stage has sort of run its course; and you can sense it's time again to focus more on finished work.
