The Effect of TV on the 1950s Family
this video describes Fiona's research. ENJOY!!! ( please note that I was a junior in high school at the time I made this video for an AP US history end of year project. I also made the bulk of this video at 2:30 am and thus my pronunciation is a little questionable. I never intended for this video to get as many views as it has but am very pleased that it did. )

You can’t tell me mainstream tv doesn’t tell or influence folk how they should appear nowadays any differently than 70 years ago . I don’t recall any tv advert or presenter or soap character not being or having some stereotypical or idealistic appearance unless it’s to highlight a negative aspect of being or lifestyle choice that requires fixing . For example on British tv maybe you won’t see women doing housework wearing peaks or heels but they’ll definitely exude great fashion sense & 90% of them will have physically ‘ideal’ bodies . I’m sorry but ‘ diversity’ doesn’t extend very far when ‘ real ‘ people are portrayed on daily tv beyond use of racial diversity you still don’t see any disabled or funny shaped or butt ugly folk vying for our attention 😁👍
Well, I’m going to be very nice about this The person that video together obviously has not done their homework right in front of you trying to make this not make sense because they did not do the homework. Thumbs down big time.
"BUD HAS A DATE WITH A GIRL??YOU MEAN A RE GIRL??PEG,WHY DIDN"T YOU TELL ME ABOUT THIS??!!"-AL Bundy
It's the commentator on this video that has it wrong. I'd much rather go back to the 50's and beyond than live with the woke, degenerate zombies today.......
Those good old days will return one day...during the millennial reign of Christ...only then, they shall be better.
I was born in 1961 and I can remember my 2nd grade teacher commenting to the whole class on the popularity of TV . . . She said, "Well, I hope all your parents aren't letting you watch the Idiot Box!" I mostly remember how angry she was anytime that subject came up - she was convinced it would be the ruin of children's attitudes and prospects for the future. She wasn't wrong, I think.
beautiful comment. she was right, the TV's and media influences children a lot nowadays.
TV homogenized the country. 90% of the citizens suddenly had the same things in common.
What are the names of these films presented and do you have any access to the links for the information?
They weren't films, they were TV shows. 'Leave It to Beaver', 'Father Knows Best', and 'I Love Lucy'. Anything you want to know about them can be found online via Google.
Birth control ruins women’s health. It was made intentionally to decrease population. Eugenics.
Wow
Wow!! I hope you can see now that you did some amazing work here.
Television has NEVER emulated reality ... ever. It's not called the idiot box and the boob tube for no reason! I cut my cable 30 years ago! No more lying state propaganda brainwashing and no more imbecility! One of the BEST decisions I EVER made--- especially for my 5 children! Our home life improved immensely! i1.yuki.la/4/77/c114f2d992e9090b6f59d798dd0746df202447bf6925bfb4394dc520dce8c774.jpg
I was born in 1963 and I remember from a young age my brother and sister and I, along with my friend's and their siblings, were quite obedient to our parents. This had nothing to do with tv. Even as a teenager in the late 70s and early 80s me and my friends still respected our parents. I've noticed how a lot of tv shows for kids today have kids (actors/actresses, of course) talking back to the parents and being disobedient to them and a lot of actual kids are doing the same to their parents. In this video it's mentioned how obedient kids were in tv shows back in the 50s vs today but that's how we were in real life vs kids today...so could kids today be disrespectful to their parents because of what they watch on tv?
I think with the introduction of the internet, kids have been more connected than ever. People can see what goes on in Houston Texas, then with the swipe of a finger be well versed in what's going on in Portland, Oregon. What was called "teenage rebellion" isn't actually rebellion. It's more the sudden realization of how you deserve to be treated. And "obedience" and "respect" should *not* be given to people just because they're your parents or because they're older than you
Yes they got everyone hooked on it and then used it to destabilise the culture .
Always a negative Nancy on anything that has happened in past.. tv brought the country together
Nice research, but the voice keeps talking over the clips and they are unrelated to the essay. This is complex history and it is too easy to be simplistic. Let the scripts tell you something. It's a good start but it needs more insight. Keep working.
This was 5 years ago. She has since graduated from whatever school she was doing this for.
Not your usual leftist designed programs.😁
Good job Fiona! This is what we watched when we got our first TV in the fifties and oh, how different was reality then! Thanks for doing this and you have nothing to apologize for. Your presentation is perfect and effective. Thanks for sharing it.
I agree with Deanna.. been there & friends & family was different then (kiddo who narrated this)...not unrealistic kids had more respect for elders, morals and common courtesy was way better then! It would be good if the generation now would try to learn from it. A better world it was. <3
Ah, don't you miss the good ole days? All the women's objectification and discrimination were just so beautiful then! Back when younger generations had no insight or ability to independently think critically. A better world it was. <3
june cleaver made our moms seem kinda crude! true story im not alone!
Yours may have been, but my mom was never crude. True story. I'm not alone.
We weren't 'unrealistically obedient' back then; more like realistically obedient. Cuz the reality was if you didn't obey, you were likely to get an ass whoopin' from your parents, who you were more scared of than any teachers or police.
I didn't need to have my ass whooped. A good nuclear stink eye from either of my parents was usually quite enough.
I hate to say this.. But in that Day.. Those kids REALLY DID OBEY their PARENTS! I have talked to many Many elderly who would never have dreamed of Not doing exactly what they were told. It comes from a God Fearing Country and a Generation who was raised by a Generation that took Responsibility for their children, their future, and taught respect in their daily lives and their own daily habits. I can say even today. My children have a few issues.. but they were taught to be respectful, and do what their Mom and Dad said... We still have a few issues... because the outside world says to do whatever you want... But Good Parenting teaches respect>Not Fear> Respect and Responsibility.
the outside world says to do whatever you want - Yes this is exactly is the problem now a days.
Actually, that was the era of youth rebellion, of Beats and Greasers. There were higher rates of juvenile crime and youth gangs, both boys and girls. Also, premarital sex rates were the same as they are now. How the 1950s were portrayed on tv is not how it was in real life.
@FilmNitrate Exactly my Point. You Made it. Good Luck! Thank you.
@@MarmaladeINFP I understand. it was still an era where things were still TAUGHT and LEARNED>> I don't believe there's EVER been an era that didn't have premarital sex and all that. Teens are Teens... Fear... Intelligence and Punishment does Not mean a thing.. I believe that a lot of that was because there was more influence to move them to "find themselves" and not be like their parents. It's sad but it would have been great for many of them to be like their parents.... Be Responsible and Forward Looking.
Respect is not a right. You have to earn respect. Values such as responsibility are important for kids to understand, but the understanding that parents and elders don't intrinsically deserve our respect is one of the high marks of recent generations.
Spock's mom.
You are incorrect about when the co axial cable set up was completed. It was not completed until the fall of 1951. That is one of the main reasons I Love Lucy as filmed and not shot live with a kinescope copy being made at the time of the live broadcast.
Excellent job !
your research worked! you did a great job on this video!
It is Co-AX cables...coaxial cables.
Dear LOUISE huREL, Ziggy Mehta, and Alice McEliott Thank you for your comments; i now refer you to the updated description.
could we have the text of this video? thanks
I may be like 5 whole years late but if you click the three dots you can click on "transcript" which shows you the script of the video. Whatever school you're at you must have graduated by now but whatever.
It's pronounced new-clear. Not Nuke-yuh-ler.
