Mixed Media With James Huntley
США
Добавлен 10 авг 2021
These videos contain a collection of works by the mixed media artist James Huntley. He has a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University (Bloomington) and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign). After university, he lived and traveled in Asia for seven years studying Chinese painting and ink techniques. In addition to processes and techniques, he also explains his ideation for his works. He has taught Advanced Placement (AP) Studio Art for nearly 20 years and has also been an AP Reader as well. Using drawing from life, sketchbooks, found photos, and memories, he details all of his influences for the work.
The Future and What It Says About Us
An examination of our current day loneliness and alienation. So many in Gen Z face uncertain futures. Adults tell them how much they hate their jobs everyday and many young people feel that their lives will be worse than their parents. Doom and gloom dominate social media and news stories. While I draw, I try to explain through my own experiences of working with Gen Z.

If You Live Long Enough, Your Style Will Evolve

We discuss how learning new techniques and processes will add to your existing style. Staying in the same thing and making it over and over can become stale. While it’s often crucial for viewers to know your work as soon as they see it, it also wonderful to add little new surprises to the mix. #artstyle #mixedmedia #art #inkpainting #landscapeart #art #color
Why All of My Paintings Begin Abstract
Просмотров 65914 дней назад
An overview of how I start all pieces…beginning with shapes and colors and building the abstraction until I find something within the composition. We take a look at chalk transfer mono prints and using a spray bottle to bleed both acrylic and ink. In this clip, I use Rembrandt chalk pastels, FW and Dr. Ph. Martin’s inks, Neopastels, along with Liquitex acrylic paints. #mixedmedia #abstractart #...
No Money? No Problem. Drawing on the Cheap.

This video examines drawing on cardboard with a General’s 6B charcoal pencil and Rembrandt white chalk. You do not need expensive art supplies to create compelling images. Cardboard is plentiful and very durable. Many early 20th century artists drew and painted on cardboard that have stood the test of time. While not archival, it is still a pretty tough alternative surface. #cardboard #art #dra...
So You’re Not Showing or Selling Right Now. Are You Still An Artist?

While working with my paintings and drawings, I discuss the ups and downs of trying to sell and show your work. All artists have downtimes and this is this is the best time to build a solid body of work and learn to experiment. Exhibitions can wonderful but they can also be disappointing. You will probably have more views on online than people attending a show or even going to the gallery to se...
Ink Bleeds, Chaos, and Population Decline All Rolled Into One

Using a crayola water-based marker, India ink, and 140 lb. coldpress watercolor paper, I take you through an investigation of synthesizing an idea through the very chaotic processes I employ. Starting with ink bleeds, I gradually incorporate lines with a marker and pen. I try to bring in some of my thoughts and ideas rather than just techniques and physical processes. #ink #inkbleeds #mixedmedia

Altered books are a great way to explore new ideas and concepts and allow yourself to make mistakes and be more flexible with process. They may stand alone as a page or an idea for another larger work. How to Find Your Artist Voice

How to Make Art a Diary of Your Life
Actually, I changed my style significantly in recent years. About 30 years I did what we call doodling nowadays, I think. In the beginning only with black ink and a quill, later on with colored pencils. I really thought my style was unique, but around 10 years ago I found that doodling (or Zen Tangle) was very common, some people even had some of their patterns patented. So I came to the conclusion that I just had met the spirit of the time - or the Zeitgeist how we call it in German. That was a grim perception for me so I decided to try something different and started to paint with acrylics on larger canvases. Bold gestures instead of tiny linework, mostly complementary colors instead of harmonizing colors. Something like reinventing myself new. Nowadays I try to combine my different styles and indeed, sometimes it works out quite well.
Thanks for such thoughtful commentary, Margret. I think we all reinvent with age...I certainly have. We can't help but be influenced by a variety of styles, processes, and mediums. Work can become quite stale if we don't adjust. I even begin to tire of my favorite contemporary artists if they just keep churning out the same work over and over. We are all works in progress until the end.
Mr. Huntley, your work has never ceased to amaze me. What you’re able to do with color is incredible.
I appreciate that, color always plays a big part in my process.
I’m completely wowed-well done!😍😍😍
Thank you very much! Your words are much appreciated.
It looks so beautiful! Nice share 😊 👍 🌺
Thanks so much...just some thoughts from my studio on a snowy day. Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!
Love it, as always! 😊
Thanks so much!
It definitely takes away that hesitation of getting started with the dreaded "blank white" page. Thank you for sharing this I truly look forward to incorporating this technique into my own works. Currently I'm playing around with a lot of collage. I can't get enough of it! LOL
Thank you, Krista! Yeah, the dreaded white page is something we all face...just putting down layers help me and something usually presents itself.
@@jameshuntley9674 It really does, even just a bit of watercolor or ink. Again, thank you for your videos. I enjoy your philosophy the most. You say just enough for one to ponder and munch on, without telling one how to think!
@@kristacarrollart That really makes me happy, Krista. I think art art its best is pretty open-ended with many interpretations. I often wake up in the morning with questions...or on drives...
Art is freedom. Do not limit yourself by the limits you have. Create with what is at hand. Just express yourself 💙🔥💙
Totally agree...creativity becomes even more interesting when one uses alternative media...
Gorgeous!
thanks so much for your kind words!
Thanks
thanks again!
Wow amazing
Thank you!
Loved the collaging part!
thanks so much....I love to experiment with collage!
😮😮😮 I gotta try some of these techniques!!!! Thanks for sharing them!
Thanks so much...the chalk monoprint transfer is fun...and unpredictable.
Chipboard is a great substrate for drawings. It has a beautiful neutral grey color and works extremely well with ball point pens either black or blue...
thanks for the suggestion...will check it out.
Copy machine paper is very cheap and the quality is decent i think
Absolutely...the artist Walter Anderson made a career out of watercolors on copy paper...
Uuuuuhhh...
That's how I feel this morning!
Have you tried homemade gesso on the cardboard first?
No, I haven't...can you elaborate? I have gesso I've bought....
@jameshuntley9674 spread the gesso on the board first then paint on top of that. The gesso makes the cardboard white and not brown.
@@jessejames8900 thank you!
I love your work. It took me until I was 65 to get back into painting after a lot of work before I had time.
Thank you so much, April! Life is journey. Nothing is written in stone until we're gone...always a chance to reinvent!
I agree with your perspective on the gallery’s. I have been showing my work in local libraries, and craft shows. The prices are lower, but don’t have to give half the money away. I’m 82 and this is an easier way for me. I have sold some, but nothing big.
Selling one's work and exhibiting is something hardly covered at all in art schools. Sometimes, I think it would be beneficial for arists to study finance as much as fine arts. Location is also very critical. It is a lifetime endeavor without any easy answers. If you love it, you will undoubtedly keep making it. The art world reflects our current society. Some are very lucky and are able to find the majic through experimentation to make it to the one percent.
Love it. The blue trees finished it
Thank you! I always struggle when it comes to the end...
Thank you. I’m glad I found you . This will open up a new abstract phase in my painting that I’ve been looking for
I make it my practice to mix both...I usually start out abstract until I find images that become more clear in the process.
As an Art researcher and Collector of 20+ years some of your views may be true but only in the lower band of artists and gallerys.
I agree, but most artists are in the lower band...only the very few ever get to the top galleries...
James, could you elaborate a bit more on how you incorporate your backgrounds into your paintings?
I just make marks with ink or acrylic paint to get the process started…I will often obliterate the background with my ideas but the viewer will often see some remnants of the abstract background. It’s sort of like a starter prompt that English teachers use with young students. It takes away the intimidation of a blank page staring at you😉….
@@jameshuntley9674 Thanks!
Thanks James. Your videos are always a bright spot in my day.💙
Thanks so much! I try to make at least one per week. I really appreciate your words…that keeps me going☺
Very Effective
Thank you so much! I am not so professional with my presentation but I try to make up for it through honest speak🙂
Thanks so much!
Wow! Thank you. I am readying my supplies.
Have fun! There's nothing more rewarding than taking chances, experimenting, and getting immersed in the process. It can really take you into other realms and can block other negative aspects of everyday life.
Great advice… I definitely resonate with you…. Thank you for sharing!!!
Thank you so much for your support! Thanks for looking.
Thank you so much! I enjoy making them...Most of my paintings begin like this clip. Once again, one can start...not completely like the marks...and paint over it. The more the marks and texture, the more the backgrounds and layers evolve.
I absolutey loved this video. It is so rewarding to se and hear the process! I am saving this video for future references :D
Wow! This is fantastic! Super cool style. I am looking forward to giving this a go. Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks so much! It's fun to let your imagination run wild and work off from what's inside the book. Absolutely give it a try!
I ❤ this. Liked and subbed. Thanks for showing this.
Thank you...it can be addictive!
This truly speaks to me!! Thrift store books make for a great way to economically practice art and try out new mediums. A nice way to recycle too. It adds to my art, especially when i let pictures and/or text peek out from the page. I love collage, but some think it is not true to keeping your art original, but I find that it adds something I may not be able to reproduce by my own hand. Anyway, I digress. I really appreciate you sharing your book with us.
Absolutely, I find that adding text and imagery from other sources is a great way to add texture and meaning to my own work. For me, it allows for more experimentation and avenues into larger works. Thanks so much, Krista!
Nice topic…curious, how are you attaching tje tissue to the watercolor paper???
thanks for watching, Avon…used a very watery wood glue…
Very inspirational!
thanks so much!
Hi James, thanks for posting. I can't figure out what you're doing off screen - I see you have a waterbrush, and it looks like you dipped in the ink to start, but then I see you moving farther off screen to the left (or so it looks) and to the upper right. Are you dipping the brush in water at some point? When you said that you "added water", was that by squeezing the water brush, or dipping in another container? And what's going on to the upper right? Are you removing some of the ink on another piece of paper or towel or something? No need to reply, I'll give it a try and figure it out, but just thought I'd give you some audience feedback.
Yes, my ink container is on the left and the water container is on the right….I “added water” by dipping my brush in the water container. I dilute the ink by adding water. I’m sorry that is not clear. Thanks so much for the feedback! I will try to do better on location of the materials in future videos.
Are soft pastels also water-soluable? Thanks!
Some are….like Holbein and Sennelier
Enjoyed the video. I do assemblage and oftentimes the objects dictate what I'll create just by playing with various stuff. The thinking comes with the engineering of how to put it together and finding the right title for a piece.
Absolutely agree...all a matter of experimenting and taking chance!
Beautiful paintings 🥰👍
thank you, so much!
Beautiful 🥰👍
thanks so much!
One of my biggest challenges is knowing when a work is done( or leaving it alone). I’ve had some personal favorite works of mine around for decades and sometimes I go back to them and add more things or add extra detail. . I was thinking no one does that but then I saw you do it. I’m not so crazy after all?😅
absolutely not...or we are both crazy! It hasn't been unusual for artists in history to make revisions. Knowing when a piece is done is one of life's great questions.
I love the stories of your works... that, you incorporate America in them! I kind of having a "hemwee", like memories of my past, being a child in Texas, with my businessman dad, some kind of a "vision".... always wanting to go to US, but never happened....I buy books of americans doing watercolours, and watch lots of them doing mixed media!!! I love americans, and AMERICA!!!And love "native" or local artworks!!! ---- love Cleo
thank you, Cleo!…there’s a story behind each painting I do. Even though the US is a generally young country compared to most other countries, it’s packed with a lot of interesting history. Quite honestly, I learned more about the US when I lived abroad…it’s always fascinating to learn how others view your own country. Thanks again for your comments❤️
I have painted oil on canvas during the 90s, and kept all my "paintings" intact!!! I also have dry pastels and watercolours.....all "cosmic" and flowers!!!But, now, I'm lost!I wanted a new "hobby" and bought books about Jewellerys....i stopped!!!I need a new style, and I like your works....i've always been interested in "mixed media"; even my watercolours are not "classic"....my ghod! i need a new art hobby! tfs
Thanks so much…I painted exclusively in oil for a long time when younger…but now, I focus on a mixed media approach. I enjoy the spontaneity of using different traditional and unconventional materials. By all means, break all the rules. It’s great not to know exactly what you’re doing when starting a new piece with mixed media…it can allow you to find more possibilities.
@@jameshuntley9674 I knew you had a baggage and a background....I can see them on your mixed media works! I'm a sunday painter! I painted coz it was necessary, but these days, my canvasses are left half painted!!! I'm gonna need a new start...but, I can't leave the cosmics behind, it always make a mark on all my works! I'm selling all my paintings this year, or next year...I have a sister in america that "motivates" me to selling them!
I have always been loving my family and my son, my ex and his nephews....I don't sell my own paintings for myself, but for them!!! I love them so much, and I have this urge and direction for them, alone!
@@TheresaREAberilla That is wonderful
@@TheresaREAberilla motivation is key...just do the work! The sales will come if that is your focus.

Very beautiful 😍🥰✨

Thank you for your comment❤
This resonates with me. I find that since I started a channel the pressure of drawing requests makes me stress. My channel is just a vlog to show my progress. I don't have a style or body of work that correlates. I just "do." Learning from other artists is what my channel is about. I'm not an artist, but I have an affinity for making art. Basically, having fun, but I find that the viewer wants more. (chuckle) I can only do what strikes me at the time. Anyway, that was longwinded. Good advice. Thank you and glad to see you back on here!
Thanks for your thoughts…totally relate. I hope others can learn from watching my clips. That said, I have to have fun with what I’m doing and enjoy making the videos. Most of my titles and works stem from my current conversations with a variety of sources. Thank you for your kind words❤
