Thank you for sharing this! I always thought the Michael Ball version is the only recorded one. So glad to know there is this version of the original cast Jere Shea singing this "more bombastic" (according to Sondheim) version.
I've heard vocally stronger Balladeers (Patrick Cassiday is still the most amazing) but Neil Patrick Harris gives the best acting performance of that song. He knows exactly where and how to deliver the laughs and the pathos.

Why is the accordion player following him around?
Oh, good eye. If I were to theorize: In this version of the show, the cast is framed as asylum doctors tending the patient Toby, some time after the story's events. The accordion player plays two characters, Pirelli and Toby's future doctor/caretaker. She's often seen tending to Toby, playing alongside him and making sure he doesn't harm Sweeney's actor. Perhaps, the doctor follows Sweeney in case he does anything drastic. And, perhaps, Pirelli follows Sweeney as his first kill, the first of many to come. Might be overthinking here. But the director, John Doyle, just loves this kind of metaphorical storytelling. So I wouldn't necessarily rule this out as a reach.
