I had the pleasure of knowing Zandra and working with her as both an apprentice and after, before we went our separate in life, when the dockyard closed. She was and should be an inspiration to all women who want to make it in a world that is assumed to be for men , when in fact it , is possible to be a woman.

I worked at Chatham Dockyard from 1955 to i970 before and during the time I attended the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. All the staff at the Chatham Dockyard College were of great help especially Mr. Hutchinson, Mr.. Ferguson and Mr. Fearless. I worked in many localities during my Electrical Fitter indentured apprenticeship including maintaining in good order those three bridges permitting the crossing of the narrow parts of those three basins which made up Chatham Dockyard. There is so much to say about working on HMS Exmouth the first gas turbine ship in the Navies with its two Proteus and one Olympus "jet engines". Also the circuit breakers on HMS Fort the Depot ship, and the O class submarines as the Ocelot where I worked on the analogue computers fed from the 22 phased array signals on the side of the submarine. I spent many hours in tht big shed which housed the HMS Victory. That shed is a masterpiece of wooden structures and I always marvel when ever I look at that ceiling in photographs. There is so much I can say about Chatham Dockyard including the research on knife switches for the main motors of submarines, their waveguide runs, and the design of the instrument panel on the Ocelot. the cryptography with the KDF 7 American machine with the fast spinning dis having the alphabet on its circumference. The work at the dockyard was fine, but the Uniformed Personnel at the Dockyard were not exactly pleasant. I shall say no more about that, After Chatham closed down , I had to find my feet elsewhere, and I am still standing at my old age with happy memories of Chatham and Gillingham, Maidstone and Rochester. I lived at 30, Boundary Road just off the station and often walked at night from Bourneville Avenue. The traffic police at Chatham always stopped me driving late at night, but they were pleasant and laughed at me when I told them that I wear my light colored Jacket not only to keep warm, but so that the headlights of other cars will reflect on me and I would be seen by other drivers. Once one Policeman after hearing me say that he said, " Will you please come with me to the Police station and explain that to my chief so that we shall adopt your idea of wearing something reflective at night," I did go down to Chatham Police station to explain it all. Thank you for the memories, that is beautiful Victory to look after. and do treasure it. ,

My father was a boilermaker there in what is now the shopping centre . Lots of fond memories of navy days from my childhood aswell

My surname Blommaert comes from a wealthy merchant trader (Samuel Blommaert) who was a director of the WIC. In this video you see the statue of Michiel De Ruyter in Vlissingen and the Maisbaai in Middelburg. This was the place where they build 336 vessels for the VOC.
