RCSB Project 4L60E close ratio trans build (FULL COURSE)
Modified is back and still learning these 4L60e transmissions. This time I'm taking apart the 4L60e from my 2006 Chevy Silverado PreRunner Project and looking to see what I did to it. I was running 35" tires and a 3.23:1 gear ratio axle because I had cracked the carrier on my built 4.10:1 ratio 10 bolt and needed to use it to go to work. That being said, I only have so much discipline and tried to outrun a Mustang getting onto the interstate. Well, when it shifted into 2nd gear around 70ish mph it made a noise that sounded like two handfuls of glass and bolts being shaken in an old tin coffee can. I was able to limp it home under its own power having only 1st, 3rd, and reverse. So, after ...

My 1st 4l60e full rebuild (FULL COURSE)
Просмотров 550День назад
Last year (2023) I attempted to completely rebuild my 1st 4l60e transmission. That being said, I familiarized myself with the ATSG manual and all of the parts that go into the transmission. It was difficult to tear down, and even more difficult to reassemble this 1st go around. RUclips was a very helpful tool as well as the ATSG manual once you learn how to use it. The manual's literature doesn...

When were the bolts for torque converter to flywheel done? Did I miss that?
@JuanRodriguez-yl9oq I tighten the converter bolts after the unit is bolted to the engine, and the crossmember is in. It may have been done in the next video. Always remember to allow for about a 1/8" pullout from the trans to ensure proper pump spacing. Usually I'll have to install machine bushings to get the clearance right. I definitely show how I do that when installing the close ratio trans into the RCSB PROJECT. Thanks for commenting on my video, it really helps my channel out.
And for the forward clutch it’s steel, clutch, steel, clutch, WAVE STEEL, THICK STEEL, steel, clutch, steel clutch and so forth.
@JordanDennington on my 1st go around, I probably went through that forward clutch 5x. My buddy had forgotten a bunch of steps and that ATSG manuals literature doesn't follow the diagrams. Sometimes, 2 pages later, I found the picture that went with the description. It's was confusing, but eventually, it went back together correctly and worked fine.
And you didn’t put your orange seal, underneath the sprag.
I did, I had recorded doing the forward clutch so many times and new to video editing as well as transmission internals. I probably used the wrong clip during the editing process. Thanks for commenting on my video. It really helps my RUclips channel gain some traction.
Gold copper color washer goes underneath the planetary, not below the sunshell
That's the way I found it. It was previously rebuilt, and I was going to learn how these things work and beings this trans was working, but only had 1st and reverse. I was unsure what was wrong with it, and my manual I was trying to follow had all of the exploded diagrams in the very back to see where everything went. It was overwhelming, to say the least, and after 5x or so of being unsure after installing it and taking it back apart, I couldn't remember which part that I recorded was the correct one. I'm new to the whole youtube process and still fighting things out, but I had to start somewhere. This video is a compilation of a trans I rebult 2yrs ago. Thanks again for leaving a comment, RUclips sees that, and promotes my videos across their algorithm so more viewers will see it.

Too dangerous to use wd-40;
@Timemachine69 Yeah, I hear ya. At the time, I didn't have any tire goo, but my tires don't usually last long enough to worry about it. Baby shampoo works great too. Thanks for leaving a comment on my video!
I thought you where never supposed to close the space between the trans and the motor with the bolts please inform me if I’m wrong
@ZashaunTruett Never if the trans is in a bind, don't force anything that doesn't want to go. Mine was at a slightly wrong angle but supported. The engine always falls to the back when not supported by the trans. I just used the bolts to line up the difference between the engine mounts and jack positioning. If I had felt any tension when trying to line up the guide pins, I definitely would've stopped and reset. Always make sure your converter is bottomed into the pump when installing.
Thats perty
Thank you!! I'm trying to make the whole truck perty one piece at a time!
@Modified1 yeh we like shiny ,new parts
Yes sir…I’m glad I’m not the only greyheaded man dropping a truck.my first truck was an 83, Silverado.heated the front coils and removed leaf springs in the rear…1987.now I’m doing an f150, love the look.
@greenwave792 hell yeah man!! Keeping sport trucks alive!! We always love a dropped truck!!
Is it normal for the new torque converter to scrape like that? I just put one in that’s doing the same thing. Can you hear it while you’re driving ?
No, you shouldn't hear any noise at all. The converter needs to be shimmed and allow a 1/8" pullout from the pump.
@@Modified1thanks for the reply. I mean the noise at 2:39 in the video when you spin it by hand, mine did the same thing. I just put it in, haven’t finished the install yet. I got a pro king converter.
Then yes, you'll hear the pump veins going around as you spin it and make sure it's fully seated before you install it. Also have some machine bushings handy for the install just in case the converter needs to be shimmed back into the trans to make 100% contact with the pump.
@@Modified1 ah makes sense. Thanks for the advice, I’m definitley fully seated, I had a little over an inch from the bolt pad to the bell face. And I’ll probably need some shims too like you said to get the right clearance clearance, looks like I’m at about 1/4” now after bolting up the tranny.
@briansviolins9376 I learned the hard way on a '78 elcamio SS I used to have back in the late 90's. That 1/8" pullout necessary for pump life. Good luck with your build! What is it?
Chevy stop making good trucks in the 90s
2wd, 4wd?
Both 2wd 2001 rcsb, 2006 ext cab both 4l60e transmission
I had the same thing in 1986. We took out the Muncie 5 speed and put in a turbo 400. Pop's pulled the yoke off, sans u-joint and dunked it in the parts washer. This was back when you had to wear gloves, what you'd call carb dip these days. The carb dip was on a whole other level. Anyway, then he welded the hole shut. I was 17 so I got to grind it and polish it up and then we put it back together. No more leaky leaky. Have fun.
Absolute fix!! But why the hole? Both trans are the same just a 2001- 2006 since I'm going to change the U joints anyway, I'll swap the yokes.
Could you link the center caps you got?
They are 83mm gmc caps from eBay. I bought them 2yrs ago, and there's no longer a link. Sorry, but search 83mm center caps gmc and you'll find them. I saw some on fb marketplace yesterday for $30 if you're close to the New Orleans area.
You need to replace the o-ring inside the sleeve inside the tail housing
there is always hole in yoke, its leaking cause inside oil seal is not sealing, not the yoke external seal.
Really common. The yoke has a plug in the center and it ends up leaking.
Bolt on yoke.
@Burban12 I've never inspected one till now.
@ 4l80es we build for drag racing. Anything under 600hp (no Tbrake) we keep the stock yoke. If that hole is there we just weld it shut.
Is there an advantage to doing this over just screwing them into the side of the heads like others have done?
@curtis1951 There's no real advantage, except there's a little less heat and really easy to get to in the future.
Again another video missing Key info . Of input of information using the measurement tool
8:50 What did I miss? The wheel was 11.5cm away from the measure point. Thank you for leaving a comment on my video.
Yes sir I would have giving anything to get this truck
It is a badass truck!! Got to love an International Travelall
How can I get those rims!
@Masivao-z3p The rims are Vision 390 empire 20x9. Many sizes and bolt patterns are available. I bought mine off of eBay.
Love that whine
@charlieauxilien3396 boosted anything makes the best music!!!
Can this be done to a 2003 GMC yukon
@ismaellopez3860 yes, this is a 02 GMC. Any 99-06 vortec
@Modified1 thank you so much just recently have this problem
@ismaellopez3860 just make sure you go back with a quality brand of knock sensor. I've gone through 4 different pairs to find 2 that stay around 100ohm when hot. I was having a hot/cold problem. Ran fine until it got to operating temp then P0332 code and no power. The sensor would ohm in the 60's hot and 99 cold. So be sure the sensors are good, but this block makes it easy to change until you find a good set.
Sweet! Glad to see father, son working together.
@astorrodriguezlopez this was my 1st rebuild in 20 years!! We both learned a lot, and it works perfectly!!
Trying to get him into mechanics instead of video games.
Thank you for commenting on my video it really helps my channel out!
That's going to leak
@jerrymcbeath3192 I am pleased to say that after more than 2 years, there are no leaks! I've replaced the entire headliner and double-checked every rivnut and antenna repair. The factory rivnuts are encapsulated on the ends, and the extra sealant doesn't let any water past the threads. Thanks for commenting on my video!
Bought my dad's '03 off of him last month and am changing the oil for the first time on it. This was super helpful, thank you!

Wouldnt wd40 eat away rubber?
@krzysiekv12 I'm not exactly sure, but I haven't had a problem yet. I also wear out a set of tires in a few years. The best thing I've found so far is the off brand baby soap/shampoo, the gold one. In the video, I was just using the closest slippery stuff I had.
@ thanks for the video. I have ordered myself a cheapish set too, a bit different balancer but hopefully easy to use
@krzysiekv12 The instructions are crap, but the customer service was great. Thank you for commenting on my video. It really helps my channel out. I'm sure you'll learn the balancer in no time. It's one of those you just have to mess with it a bunch things.
Where you get them rims?
@Masivao-z3p eBay on clearance, I paid $600 for the set, and unfortunately, they don't make them in this bolt pattern anymore. 20x9, and they also made a 20x11 too. I just bought the same wheels for my car hauler, so Vision still makes them, but last time I went to their website, I couldn't find 8x165.1 bolt pattern but they still make the Vision 390. That's what I did was get the part# off of Vision wheels and put it onto eBay and hit lowest price + shipping, and I got the last 4. Thank you for commenting on my video, it really helps my channel out!
that was shit
This was me leaving high school in 1996 In my F body 1995 Z-28! I think the factory Goodyears lasted about the first oil change 😂
@@tammyforbes2101 lol, hell yeah!! Me too!
These burbs are beasts.
@Wicked_RotF30 I like mine way more than I thought I would! I've pulled ups, fedex, and Amazon delivery trucks and a 2500 diesel 4x4 lifted ram out of the ditches around where I live in SE Louisiana. The Amazon truck I pulled out was on a gravel driveway, but the 2500, 8.1, 4x4 in 4 low didn't even spin a tire, and when the converter stall tightened around 1500 rpm, they all came out effortlessly. Mine has been lowered 4/7 and looks like a 1500 and always surprises everyone! Lol, yep, love the Gangsta Burb!!

What’s the bolt length?

@willstansbury3747 Thank you, and yes, it's about the cars making the soundtrack. That maroon coupe across the road though 💪🏽💪🏽
I have a 2009 5.3l that does not appear to have a connector for the knock sensors. Could they be hardwired all the way from the sensors to the ECU? Seems like they are. I would really like to relocate them.
The 07-13 style is what we went to on this '02 they were under the intake, now on the sides like a 07-13. I don't know if there's a harness connection, but we changed ours to be like yours from the factory. Where are you thinking to relocate them? I think yours are in a good place.
Why would my extension harness not be long enough? I ran it behind the head and by the transmission and it won't reach my passenger side sensor
We had extra on the harness we got off of Amazon. I'm not sure why yours is short. Both sides of our harness were equal length and around 4' you could also run the harness in front of the heads and down, they wouldn't be all up in the exhaust that way and might make it.
@@Modified1 Have you had issues with the knock sensors going bad? I've had to replace my sensors twice since relocating them. I'm thinking water is getting to them and causing issues. I might end up putting dielectric grease on the sensor and wires connection point.
@ChevyGuy70 Yes, I've gone through 3 sets to find 2 good ones. They ohm out at 99, and then as they heat up, they lose impedance, dropping to 68-82, tripping the P0332 code. These new knock sensors are a joke. I've read mechanics going through 6 sets to find 2 good ones, but at least now they are easier to get to. The 2 that worked for me ohm at 120ish and only drop to 100ish when hot. Good luck finding a matched set. I'm running a delco and a napa brand, but these 2 ohm the same, and I have a bunch I returned. Thank you for commenting on my video!
Is this 3 inch from stock pipes all the way back? This video has convinced me to get an x pipe in my 1500hd.
The stock pipe is a 2 3/4 inch. We went 2 1/2 after the converters. The 2.5 slips right into the 2.75 and welded it up!! 2.5 comes right out of the manifolds and the use 2.75" so when they bend it the pipe is 2.5" in the bends because they don't use mandrel bends from the factory. Thanks for commenting on my video. It really helps my channel!!
If you check the pulleys they had no lubricants or any ball bearing it is just pure metal against some plastic friction material, I did took the apart and add some grease on them. The pulleys also welded crocked. I also have no idea how to connect the limited switch and I'm an electrician. The instructions are very poor. These equipments are as cheap build as possible, but I think good enough for a very low use rate. Also the center plate that cover the hose and the cables was missing on my unit..
Yeah, I had to figure out a few things on my own with the broken English instructions and grease it myself too. Thanks for commenting on my video!
