Martin Brundle, how did it go so wrong?
Martin Brundle went wheel to wheel with Ayrton Senna in Formula Three, all but matched both Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen in equal cars and yet he never in won a race, never mind the multiple World Championships that his rivals enjoyed. Arriving in Formula One as the coming man, Brundle never lived up to the high expectations that his junior career set. So where did it all go wrong?

Jim Clark Mr Perfection
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Месяц назад
Twice in the 1960s Jim Clark claimed the F1 World Championship driving for Lotus. On each occasion he scored the maximum score possible under Formula One rules. Fangio and Stewart called him the best of his era and they weren’t wrong. Tragically killed in an unimportant F2 race in Germany in 1968, we were never to find how just how high Clark could have raised the Formula One records he had ach...
Mario Andretti - A year of triumph and tragedy
Просмотров 4 тыс.2 месяца назад
In 1978 Mario Andretti achieved a lifelong ambition by becoming Formula One World Champion driving for JPS Team Lotus, but the achievement was one tainted by tragedy, with the loss of two close friends; on and off track clashes and the belittling of his achievement by rivals, team managers and journalists. This is the story of a Championship won in Black and Gold, in a year filled with black an...

Andrea De Cesaris, the redemption arc
Просмотров 5 тыс.2 месяца назад
Andrea De Cesaris entered Formula One at the age of 21 and early in his career gained a reputation as an accident waiting to happen, yet remained in the sport for 15 seasons, demonstrating speed and maturity right up until the point where he retired from F1. He never rid himself of the reputation for crashing, nor did he really ever stop having accidents, but there were good days and bad days. ...

From 1972 to 1982 Carlos Reutemann was one of Grand Prix racing's fastest drivers, except on the days when he wasn't. What was it that made him untouchable one day and uncompetitive the next? Did he ever want the Driver's Championship enough to compete with those hungrier for success? A story of a sublime racer, whose relationships with teams and other drivers was not always the best. A man who...
Keke Rosberg Formula One's Own Street Fighter

1982 Formula One World Champion Keke Rosberg either lucked into his title thanks to the misfortunes of others, or was the most consistent driver in a year when getting to the finish meant more than ever. Whilst he only won one race in his title year, his later victories against the odds, claimed when conditions were at there most treacherous showed that you underestimated him at your peril. (Ja...
Chris Amon, the F1 driver with the sport's biggest jinx
Просмотров 11 тыс.3 месяца назад
From his Grand Prix debut at 19, through a career spanning 96 races and zero victories, New Zealander Chris Amon never once caught a lucky break. If there was bad luck to be found, it was to be found in his vicinity. Put him in a reasonably fast car and he would put it in a winning position, before Lady Luck would intervene and find some new and creative way of stealing victory away. A driver r...
Mansell, the Lion who roared and whined

Nigel Mansell's Formula One career spanned sixteen seasons, and brought him 31 victories and the 1992 World Championship. Popular with the fans, his relationship with teams, engineers and especially other drivers was difficult. Was he as good as his supporters suggested, or as bad as his detractors claimed?
Jochen Rindt World Champion even in death
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.4 месяца назад
The story of Jochen Rindt, Formula One's only posthumous World Champion, who claimed his title from beyond the grave. His success ignited enthusiasm for Grand Prix racing in his adopted homeland of Austria. Rindt was a key part of Jackie Stewart's movement to bring driver safety to Formula One, yet he was killed by his own refusal to follow safety rules.
Prost the unloved champion
Просмотров 5 тыс.4 месяца назад
This one might be controversial: Alain Prost was one of Formula One's most successful drivers, yet in conversations about the all time greats his name is rarely mentioned. His reputation was tarnished by a bad decision taken one afternoon in Japan; but is that a fair basis to consider his place in F1's hall of fame?
The Curse of Ascari - Italy's 70 year wait for a World Champion

Italian drivers won two of the first three F1 World Championships, with Alberto Ascari becoming the first double World Champion, and baring comparison with Juan Manuel Fangio as the greatest driver of his generation. Ascari was incredibly superstitious and following his death, those superstitions seem to have become a curse on Italian drivers.

The day Damon Hill touched the stars
Просмотров 4 тыс.7 месяцев назад
At Suzuka in 1994, Damon Hill drove the race of his life, outfoxing Michael Schumacher in the sort of wet weather conditions the German revelled in. In chaotic race, held in some of the worst weather possible, Hill delivered the drive of a champion, even if he would have to wait two more years before winning that crown
The problem was that the bolts that held the armco barriers to the support posts were installed without washers, so that in the impact the bolt heads tore through the rails, allowing them to crush down and expose the steel I-beam support posts. That did the damage.
Qualifying was his F1 weakness, couldn't find those crucial last few tenths on a hot lap. On form, his race pace was as good as anybody's. He also admits that he didn't have the same level of self-confidence he felt in other series.
Excellent as usual sir. I think if your name was Martin in F1 you were fated to be seen as good but unlucky.
Attended my first F1 race in 1985, and this video is spot on and needed to be made. Only things I'd add would be the anti-competition rules (development tokens, testing bans, non-competition clauses in engine supply contracts) and the fact that cars weigh 800kg as opposed to 540 kg in the 80's and sound like someone farting in the bathtub
I’ve obviously watched this before, but it’s an excellent analysis of Mr Mansell. Enjoy all your productions.
This is a zero winner man…….
Jim Clark and then Cevert. Jackie Stewart was devastated seeing his close friends die.
Brundle was not match for Schumacher and Hakkenin. Not even close. He was a good jnr driver but was very average in F1. He was a good no2 and a journeyman!
What seasson is the last one you would consider old school/real f1? Great channel btw
1:31 Bootiful!! 😂😂
Martin brundle is now a f1 commentator
Jim Clark, the greatest driver of all time. Besides Ayrton Senna. :)
Easy one to answer Dallas 84 when he smashed his legs.
Inmenso el Lole
Martin Brundle is a legend ... simple as that.
He had some of the most incredible teammates; Bellof, Schumacher, Hakkinen.
Interesting story. Annoying to watch with the blackouts.
Brundle is and was a giant moron, there I fixed it for you!
Brundle is still allive & enjoying life, unlike Senna...
Balls to the wall red 5!!On his day he was world class, however he was prone to costly mistakes, even bordering on reckless at times. However he was a brilliant out and out racer, plus he competed and won in one of f1s most competitive eras. 🎉. Hes a legend in my book, albeit slightly flawed.
Always rated him, yes i think he probably did underachieve in his f1 career. Just didnt seem to have much luck, which you do need from time to time. Lighting fast on his day though.
A match? Not even close.
From folk who know F1 racing including Lauda said Cervert over drove that area of the Glen. I believe that totally. Over doing and twitchy caused his death not the Glen. Let it go ok. I was working there and yes it was horrific for sure. But so isn't Indy and SPA.
Actually most drivers fail to live up to expectations in F1, simply because the level of competition is higher than anything they experienced before. Brundle was one of many, and outside of the UK has been mostly forgotten, unless you watch the awful Sky feed.
Hundreds of drivers in lower formulae can match the greats in those classes. It's only when they get to the top class, that the greats continue to grow and differentiate themselves. The rest make a career as "number two" drivers, and then pundits.
Good comment. ) yes it's like, the great's move up a Gear.
Brundle's Ralt, run by Jorden, had a more powerful engine in F3. And he still lost to Senna! Trying to suggest Senna's Toleman was a better car than a Tyrrell, simply isn't true. Sure, the Hart, was a turbo engine, but it was the worst turbo engine ever. Brundle was alright, but nothing special. He wasn't in the same league as Senna, suggesting he was just sounds like a list of excuses, from a Brundle fan, because it is.
He may have not made his mark in F1, he DID win the 12hrs Sebring, 24hrs Daytona, 24hrs LeMans and was World Champion in WSC (WEC now)
Well told. Brindle is a legend. Not unlike comedy, motor racing depends heavily on timing.
Monotonous delivery
He is a Legend ! Fast , skilled, Clever , Just -Unlucky
Who is martin brundle?
He was no match to Senna and Schumacher. The contrasting difference between Senna and Brundle when they entered F1 could not be more different. He had a faster car than Senna in F3 and everyone thought he was great, when they entered the big league, Senna was head and shoulders above them all. Brundle never even won a single race in his 11 years in F1.
Hahaha what nonsense he was rubbish. How do you tell a bad driver. Answer they are in the commentary box. Another example: Davidson. What do bad drivers talk about, all the times they crashed or didn't win. What do their sad fans say, it's not fair.
I don’t need to watch your nonsense Martin sucks
Brundell and Herbert are two ex F1 drivers. Talent probably like an ordinary driver. Nothing special. FACT.
Never won a single GP. I've heard all his excuses.
Thank you for making this video. YT recommended it to me and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching it.😉. I’ve only watched Martin Brundle a few seasons as a commentator and I’ve always liked his work. I knew he had been an F1 driver but not much more than that. I very much like your style. It’s factual and quiet yet captivating. I also liked the photos of all the then young and now legendary drivers. (I’m Dutch so not a native speaker and therefore struggling a bit to find the correct words)
Senna and Schumacher won races but Brundle won life.
James may said he said the mercedes 190 cosworth was the best chassis he ever driven.
Racing God JIM CLARK - Unmatched Maestro. By far the Greatest Driver Ever - No doubt. He is and was "The Best of the Best" (Fangio, Senna, Prost, Stewart and countless others about Clark). No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark - No other driver as so much "Grand Slam" - Pole/Win/Fastest Lap/Leading every lap of the race - like him. And all that from just 72 starts... ! This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain with only one hand at the wheel (!) because of gearbox trouble...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps... In 1965 he had the most succesful year of any driver in the history of the sport: He won the F1 World Championship, the Tasman Series with F1 cars, the Indy 500, the British and French F2 Championship, the British Touring car Championship, totally over 50 (!) victories in one season !!!! For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just some examples of his mesmeric unique genius...
Your words describe the best, the most natural ever driver that raced in F1. Since I learned about him, I was more and more into knowing more. His car control was out of this world. There is/was an onboard from Oulton Park in 1963 if I am not wrong. I couldn't believe how gentle, precise his hands were on the steering wheel, yet he drove incredibly fast. It's an immense shame he doesn't gets more recognition for his astronomical talent. It is under the radar most of the time because the impact in those days wasn't as big as modern days. But even so, for me, he is the most skilled driver. I am upset about that 1968-F2 race from Hockenheim, but at least Clark managed to achieve so much in such a short time. Thanks for the detailed 1965 full season. I knew about F1 performances, but to compete in so many and win over 50 is just mind-blowing. And thanks to the author of the video another great informative documentary. Keep up the fantastic work.
Awesome post 😊
Wished he could of won a race or 5 ;-) But wasn't to be, wrong car wrong time, as many have said. We know you were a top driver Martin.
He would have beaten and out qualified many world champion team mates like Michael Schumacher, Mika Häkkinen easily if he had been faster.
A match for Schumacher and senna? Not according to the record.
Just another proof that you need a car in addition to talent. In a good car even Ralf Schumacher can win races
If Bumble was as fast as his mouth he would have been 8 times world champion. He was an average driver who kept running out of talent.
Brundle was a very good racer and overtaker. His qualifying pace wasn’t up to it though. He wasn’t the complete package like top drivers and world champions, but deserved to be in F1.
Brundle is alive and still entertaining millions, Senna’s candle burned bright and fast. Just to make it to F1 is an achievement, but to stay in the paddock and on the international circus for 4 decades is amazing.
So wrong ? Big lol Great second of Senna in F3 Matching Schumacher perfs in bennetton but in qualis Try to do the same.....
His “sense of humour “ included ridiculing my haircut (a number two crewcut) from the safety of the top of his FF2000 transporter at Castle Combe. I cursed his career at that point.
Wellllllll, ya did look a right tit to be fair.
I remember Martin Brundle racing a Toyota Corolla. Other future F1 stars at the time came through FF1600, FF2000, F3 and F2, later F3000. The special trick was to miss out at least one of those steps. Therefore, it surprised me to see him doing so well in F3. He was also good when he got into F1. However, getting to the top in F1 is not simply a matter of talent.
