Ham Radio Install in 2018 Ford F-150
I was asked how I installed my VHF/UHF radio in the truck and made a short video to show the install. I thought I upload it so you can get some ideas for your own install.
My requirements are that the bed cover has to stay in place. I live in the Pacific Northwest and it rains from fall to spring. I have lots of ideas for a much nicer antenna installation without a cover (check out stake pocket mounts!) but that wasn't an option. Drilling a hole into the cabin roof was no option because I only have less than 2" clearance to the garage door. I already have a cable in place to the other side of the truck bed for a Tarheel which will be mounted foldable inside the bed....but that's another vi...

A view quick impressions from the 2016 SeaPac Convention in Seaside, Oregon, USA. ...sorry for the short inside part. I totally forgot to film once inside ;) Music kindly provided under CC license by: www.bensound.com
Thank you for sharing !👍
Thanks for taking the time.
No antenna??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I‘ve added a Tarheel for HF, a Diamond mobile whip for VHF/UHF and another VHF antenna for APRS. I’m currently installing a Diamondback Aluminum Tonneau cover and will add the Antenna mounts and ground bands to the solid cover 😉 This video is old. Lots of changes and upgrades have happened over time.
This is possibly the jenkiest install .
Show yours so we can learn from your perfect install, please.
Keep in mind this video was taken after putting this in, the cables weren’t shortened and arranged tidy as more components were added later. The sole reason for this video was to show how you can run power/antenna cables and provide ideas as not much was on RUclips…
Nice job
Have you had any water ingress through the vent louvers?
No, I did use heavy duty zip ties to fix a drip loop to the frame before routing the cables in. Don’t go directly down from the bed into the cab.
very nice install. i just got a 2019 f150. where di you get the antenna bracket?
Where’s your mic?
I have a 2018 almost Identical to yours. Thanks for the ideas! I'm pretty set on using a HT just to keep the radio out of the sunshine They get hot enough just in xmitting. I already have the external mic and speaker so I should be good to go. Thanks again!
Good video! You mentioned you are an Icom man. Do the Icom mobile radios have an easy way to add repeaters? I hear that referred to by some reviewers and wanted to know if that was true. I drive across the county and would love to have repeaters available where I wouldn’t have to go program a code plug. I have a HT (Anytone 878) which I like fine for quality sound and signal but I have to program many things on the radio to add a repeater or update the code plug. If the Icom would do it based on location (I know the RFinder does this) I would love it. Once I have HF mobile, this may not be as important. Thanks again for your video. I am trying to get an idea for mobile radio in my new GMC and unsuccessfully looking for manuals from the manufacture on entry points in the cab. So I am pulling carpet and crawling under the truck to get an idea. I may mount my HF sticks or screw driver antennas on a Breedlove stake mount for tonneau covers. But I still have to figure out how to get the coax back got the radio. Fun to explore and since I am retired, it am not on a schedule as much anymore. All the best, 73 de KI5HXM
Hi, you want one of the newer Icom mobile rigs like the ID-4100 or ID-5100. They do have a so called „nearby repeater“ function for FM and D-Star repeaters. The radio lists the closest repeaters based on the current GPS location. Programming is super easy as you can pull the SD card from the unit and program on your PC. The only limit is the amount of memories and if you ever run out, just safe a second configuration. I travel for work and have different configurations for each area. There are also tools to build repeater lists along planned routes. I‘ve currently an IC-7100 for HF (no FM repeater list feature!) and an ID-4100 for VHF/UHF in the truck and an ID-5100 in the company car. I love the GPS based repeater list. Good luck with your project. I’m sure you‘ll find a solution to run the cables. GMC makes beautiful trucks!
You don't add repeaters to radios.
What did you mount the body to under the seat?
I found some „Delrin“ brand plastic plates in a surplus store and drilled holes to match the seat monting brackets on one side. MDF or higher grade plywood would achieve the same goal
@@ac7fd thank you Sir. KE0DSD 73.....
Dude. Awesome. Just what I was looking for
Well done, Tobias! Thank you. I've an AnyTone AT-D578UVIIIPRO tri-band (2m, 1.25m, 70cm) on order, which I'll install in my 2018 F-150. This unit doesn't have a removeable head, so the whole thing will sit on that dash section. The 578 does APRS, which I also have on my HT (Yaesu FT3D). The 578 is a DMR radio. I bought it because I wanted to experiment on the 1.25m band. I also have a bed cover but it leaves the stake pockets clear, so I plan to use a tri-band COMPACtenna either on a stake pocket mount or a lip mount. Parking at my condo is underground, and even the stock Ford radio whip bangs into things in some other parking structures. Before discovering the COMPACtenna, I'd planned to use a folding Comet tri-band whip. Limited English skills? Other than your very slight accent, I wouldn't have guessed you're not a native English speaker. 73, KN6NPZ
You didn''t tell me you were a movie star! Working on getting a truck, this will help. 73 Tommy KD4CHW
