Thank you so much! It started as a sort of fucked-up lullabye about being born into the curses your parents laid out for you but grew into so much more than that. Weird question. What genre would you call this? I can't really pinpoint it other than maybe indie occult rock, so I keep making up wacky genre names every time a post requires it or a press contact asks lol.

@@kayvanantwerpen6393 good question actually! I wanna say mayyyybe something adjacent to dark cabaret (from a few songs I’ve observed in the genre)? There’s probably something more accurate out there but such is the way of the music world! I think indie occult rock is a fun way to put it too

For sure! There are so many great artists in this area and I've been lucky enough to work with or near a lot of them, and it always scares me that eventually this stuff will be lost to time. So I try to preserve it where I can! Although given their recent boom, it seems like the wives won't vanish into obscurity anytime soon ❤️

Absolutely! I've gotten to make friends with so many great artists in my home town and for a little while I was really into uploading anything I could to preserve it, so it didn't disappear from the Internet one day. I'm dealing with illness and trying to make time for my own projects rn -- and the Wives are getting to a point they're popular enough where most of this probably won't disappear (yay) -- but I'll start trying to upload anything else I come across when I have time, especially the old stuff. ❤️

I remember texting Emilee when I first heard this one to say "someone had to write that song and I'm glad it was you." There are I think three songs of theirs I heard them play before release and made a point to ask about and pay attention to when the song was finished. This is one (the other two were Crooked/Cradle and the one off Wedding where Em says a swear real vicious, can't remember the name off the top of my head)

@@Jam_CantDraw If someone ever convinces Kate to let me post it online, I have a burnt CD-R of her very first "solo" demo album from before the band, that I bought from her around the time we first met at this little punk club back in like 2008 or 2009. I promised her a little bit ago I wouldn't ever post it without her permission, but I bet if enough fans were to beg or raise money for charity or something lol. It's really interesting to hear the proto-Wives elements and I'm very glad I never got rid of it.

Been meaning to add more stuff like this to preserve it. Also, Bek (vocalist) has a new band she's currently fronting called The Quirk and it's genuinely jaw dropping.

Yeah, I super wanted to save it for that reason (I don't have anything to do with the production). It's amazing how well the words to a poem that old translate into just a fucking banging chorus.

Bek is one of my oldest friends! Like, our parents were good friends so we met as babies lol. We grew up lying to our super conservative evangelical parents about where we were going and used to go to punk shows at this tiny venue together when we were teens. Bek has a new band she's fronting rn called The Quirk. They're doing real well, frequently touring, and as a professional writer by trade -- when Bek showed me the lyrics of some of her new stuff, I was genuinely blown the fuck away by how mature and clever she's become as a writer. Very worth checking out.

Got to see some very good performances at this open mic. Also got to drink way too many shots there too lol, but mostly very good performances.
