I grew up about a block away from the massive O&W yard in Middletown, NY Now, only the O&W "paint shop" building remains.Of course, it has been repurposed.
What a great vintage film !! Thanks for sharing it. While viewing this I could not help but make some comparisons of the work then with what is available for modern filmmakers. Making such a film back in those early days must have been materially more challenging than what present day railway videographers experience. Also, I loved the hand drawn illustrations accompanying each film chapter. Very cool. James.
Thanks for posting the clips, and thanks to Mr. E.J. McLaughlin. I lived in Cadosia valley. when I was a little boy. I remember being in the southern end of the Cadosia yard where the Depot is. I have never saw so many RR tracks at once. I managed to find some photographs/post cards of the southern end of the Cadosia Yard and I treasure them in my memory bank.
Do we know what year this was filmed?
I was just reading into this, and had attempted the same answer for another comment. It looks like they got the original EMD FT sets in 1945. The Weehawken-Walton passenger run ended Summer 1948, around the same time they fully dieselized. Looks like 1945-winter 1948 for a range.

Great scenes from classic railroading! As curiosity, i see the F-Units, this film is from what year? I Imagine after WW2 because of the diesels.
I believe they got the F-units in 1947. Wikipedia says the last passenger train between Weehawken and Walton ran in 1948, so it looks like 1947-1948. Edit: Upon further reading, it looks like they got the FT sets (precursors to the F3's) in 1945, and they were fully dieselized by summer 1948. This film has a lot of steam, so looking more like 1945 up to winter 1948.
great video was a little bummed that there were no Livingston Manor clips. Me and my brother and cousins used to walk the abandoned cinder and sit on the old Bridge edges at the little beaver kill in Morsston back in the early seventies. Always dreamed of the railway running. All the ripped up ties from the track were still present laying all over the place gathering moss.

My GGGF Richard Freeman was a O&WRR employee, retired with life passage, born near Cooperstown (1864 - 1932?) but as a child moved near Cadosia, and except for stints building logging railroads in Avoca WV or as far away as AL, worked on the O&WRR down in Delaware County until shifting to the New Berlin Edmeston branch, supposedly building the Pittsfield, NY waiting room flagstop (not really a station, all it had was a bench and a stove) where there was a siding he and his son in law loaded hardwood lumber on to ship to Walton c. 1916 - 1918 from a farm he owned nearby.
I imagine if parts of this line became a narrow gauge tourist railway after closure. Like the Mid Sodor and Arlesdale in the Railway Series.

Did you ever find any info out? My parents had a house in Morsston between exit 96 and 97 of Rt 17 they were on the old Rt 17 which ran parallel. Anyway that line ran right near the house, next to the little beaver kill and there was a bridge that crossed over the river which was long gone, but me and my cousins used to sit on the bridge abuttments and just listen to the river run. What beautiful memories. This was like 1972 or so, 15 years or so after they abandoned the line. There were still old railroad ties laying around at that time. Not to bore you to death, but the underpass at exit 97 Morrston used to be my Uncle's bar called the Empire Inn. This was before the Quickway went in. Eminent domain caused him to sell off. It's now an unserpass.
