I’m tempted to add “Wandering Son” to this list. While technically not a gender-bender (it’s about a boy who wishes to be a girl and often cross dresses, and how they and their family and friends deal with their gender non-conformity) it handles the issues and desires of gender dysphoria about as well as can be expected of a Japanese story that was started over 20 years ago. It still brings me to tears at many points, even though I’m actually secure in my gender. It’s simply beautiful. Also, I’d recommend reading the manga, as well the anime is very good, it by necessity edits and condenses many of the plot lines and themes, leaving the overall story feeling somewhat rushed and frankly contrived at times. It’s still good though, the manga is just that much richer and more developed.
