Lebanon, Kansas. The geographical center of nowhere. Lebanon, KS in the 1870s was in a different location. Originally, the people of Lebanon moved the town from about four miles away. Nowadays, the town's people have moved from the city for miles away to get to closer civilization.

The Butterfield Overland Despatch was not the same as the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. The B.O.D traveled through Kansas following close to the Smokey Hill Trail to Denver, 1865-1866. The Butterfield Overland Mail Route was earlier 1858-1861, and traveled from St. Louis and Memphis to San Francisco following a south route through Arkansas and Oklahoma areas. I use to confuse these two, thinking they were the same.

100 miles northeast of Battle Canyon, near present day Penokee KS is where the Northern Cheyenne first battle with the US Calvary occurred in 1857. 100 miles west of Battle Canyon in Colorado is where the Sand Creek massacre occurred in 1864. Some of the Northern Cheyenne present at the 1878 Battle Canyon would experience faith in Jesus Christ years later through the mission work of Rodolphe Petter. Petter began mission work among the Southern Cheyenne in 1891 and Northern Cheyenne in 1916. Chief Eugene Standing Elk would become an influential Christian leader and assisted Petter in translating the New Testament for the Northern Cheyenne.
