We think it's hard to find the best Vietnamese food generally speaking in NYC in comparison to all the best options in the Bay Area. However, our friends recommended Thái Sơn & Nam Son which we've tried and say it's as good as it can get (for our liking) in NYC. Good luck! And thanks for the well wishes.

Yes :) It was pretty nice. We were mostly in the Hongdae area which is a great place to experience cafes, hip college town vibes, nightlife, and some causal parks.
