I hope you all find this interview as interesting and informative as we did. Grab your paper and pencil because if you're lik...

Legendary Tommy Porello Interview with Danny Falcone
These interviews are absolute gold. Thank you so much for sharing this!! I have many new things to work on now!!
Be very interested what Louis thinks what type Arturo Sandoval is. There is a video with him and Wayne Bergeron where he goes from well above Double C all the way down to a fat open Pedal C.
Fabulous discussion. Thank you, all.
Where does Bobby publish the arcticles he is talking about?
Maybe Glenn will see this comment. I've been getting a lot of mileage out of the book, legit études for the jazz oriented player!
I've always though the Reinhardt stuff was skipped over a bit - I'm near as dammit a type I as my teeth are exactly in line when closed - I played both down and upstream over the years (before knowing about Reinhardt) and messed up both ways! Finding the info and getting a lesson with a Reinhardt teacher was enlightening at the time! I'm v happily nerding out to this conversation.
Chet did play in Mariachi brass.
I've tried so many mouthpieces but keep coming back to megatone 1.5 c
The concept of « legs » is incredibly helpful. I actually came to the same basic principle through trumpet teacher Ryan Nielson who says the mouthpiece should maintain a connection with the lips at all times. He say he often has to give his students permission to use more pressure. Fifty years ago when I started learning the trumpet I was taught that one should continually seek to reduce mouthpiece pressure and this has been incredibly detrimental to my playing.
Great, great stuff. So self-aware in his playing is Peter Bond. Much, much appreciation for the insight into masterful experience. Just gold for those of us trying to re-discover our youthful brilliance on an instrument that is so poorly understood, and ironically with a wealth of pedagogy.
The World Famous Tower Horns.,Sal is on Step Up,too.
Hahah that intro was hilarious Bobby Shew was like “alright alright stapp!!”
Hey guys, thanks so much for this short episode. Really helpful. I have a question for Paul: how do you “program” Clarke 2 in your practice routine? I also like the idea of taking it through its major, minor, whole tone, and other permutations, but if I use them to focus on different types of tonguing as well I feel like it would take way too long. Thanks so much and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
More about playing smart. Great stuff.
So much food for thought and practice in these two vids. Louis is always impressively relaxed looking in the stratosphere and this interview reveals how mindful he is about his playing.
Can’t wait to turn 50! 😂
What an enormous pleasure it was to hear the stories and life lessons surrounding your playing career, as you paid homage to those that came before you and those you befriended during your multifaceted life! Thank you
This is so helpful, thankyou.
Great video with great players. jw
Great Stuff! Don't miss this episode What a pleasure it is to be invited in as an appreciative listener!
Thank you What a super cool interview!
Gentlemen, Once againbThank you for a wonderful presentation on such an interesting topic!
Amazing interview This should be re-aired and be brought back to the front of the line. Going to contact Doc this month and place an order. Haven't played in over 35 years. Just had my Bach Strad 37 repaired. Can't wait to put the two together! Thank you gentlemen very much!
Could you add a link to the how to test a trumpet criteria or pdf?
This is great!! Thank you so much!! 🥇⭐️😎🎺🏆
Can’t believe how few views this has - fabulous advice from Louis.
Absolut Funtastic…….
Louis said that downstream players push down to ascend and up do descend ,and upstream players do vice versa, and that is indeed true! But 5:48 he says that Wayne ( downstream) pushes up do ascend .
Downstreamers have two classifications, and two classifications of "pivot." IIIA it's typically a higher place mouthpiece, and they will push up to ascend and down to descend. IIIB still are top lip dominant in the mouthpiece but have a mouthpiece that sits lower than a IIIA. They will push down to ascend and up to descend. I
My hero! Thank you for this beautiful interview.
Bobby... Great interview!!
After 50 years of blowing I started to experience Aperture Collapse. I went down the traditional medical path-ENT, Dental, vocal therapy, etc. There has been no improvement. Suggestions on next steps? Trumpet is life.
I hate auto-correct. Embouchure Collapse
Hey guys! Do you think a mouthpiece visualizer would be a helpful aid in self-diagnosing your embouchure type? Seems to me that it would help a lot to see what the lips are doing inside and if the air is actually going up or down. (Fun playing the other day Paul! Hopefully again soon)
Doc Reinhardt use clear mouthpieces to do this. Not sure a visualizes would be as accurate
You don't need to. If you mean upstream or downstream, just tell me what lip is predominant in the mouthpiece. If the top lip predominates , you're downstream type. If your bottom lip is more in the mouthpiece ,you're upstream type ,like majority of trumpet players.
@@snrnsjd majority are downstream
My Experience with HSV was good at all and am happy Dr Madida on RUclips was able to cure me with his herbal treatment.
13:02 did you plan that? Bobby says “flies on a turd” and I hear a duck or goose about one second later.
Thank you 😊
I love Bobby but his anatomy and physiology explanations make my head hurt. All the love -a physiologist
Physiology always seems a point of contention. Curious what you have issue with and where one might find some more accurate information?
Amazing. Just all of this, amazing. Somewhere I read that Louis Armstrong's solos were all written out in advance and he just recited them note for note .... and maybe he did, the 2nd etc. time around playing them ... but this emphasis on "ear" rather than "sight" and feeling over rote is a real breath of fresh air. For a long time now my dream trumpet has been a Yamaha "Shew" horn (I play a slightly bent and dinged Yamaha student model now) and I guess I figured I ought to go to the source, and I guess Mr. Shew is going to be "my teacher" for a while.
Shew has been my mentor for 40 years. He’s an incredible teacher and human. You will learn so much!
Thank you for your efforts. You are great. From your experience, can you recommend me a drill, a tip or something to bring and keep my jaw forward? When I play my best, the jaw is a bit forward, teeth allign, but on long phrases or 2 octave intervals for example I feel the jaw moving back. Any advice? Thanks again guys.
The best advice we can give you without actually seeing you play would be to experiment. Always be looking for things that work for you. What works for other will not necessarily work for you. Good luck!
Get a permanent cure for this, using Dr. Gbenga herbal medicine, I was cured from tinnitus since Feb 11, 2013.
So much wisdom oozing from both Part 1 and 2 of the videos!!
Thanks for this, cats!

I play trumpet, cornet, flugel and piccolo trumpet so the problem of choosing a mouthpiece becomes the problem of choosing a set of mouthpieces! I have never changed very far from the 1C 1.5C area of sizes but from different manufacturers over time. Currently trying a GR 67 #8 on cornet. Disappointed by the low register, but hopefully, this will improve as time goes on.
Give it some time! Your sound gross on a smallmouth bass when you get used to it and learn to play it.
Thank you for all your videos…great advices and interviews! The excellent and simple reflections you share and the kind and respectful way you present them deserve more support from the trumpet community. Go ahead and thank you again from Santiago de Compostela (Galicia)
Glad you like them Esteban. Muchísimas gracias!!!
Great book. I just picked it up myself. Looking forward to Paul’s videos to accompany the excerpts!
Air pivoting ? What is it ?

Dillard is the best!!
My copy has just dropped through the door here in the UK, first impressions are it is an excellent book. As a not so young amateur (60 +) I've had issues all of my playing life. Armed with the book plus guidance from my teacher, I'm looking forward to a new part of my journey with "A Bit of Plumbing'.
Great Interview guys, master session for sure!
