Winning Notrump Leads
It is common to lead your longest and strongest suit against notrump contracts. In their "Winning Notrump Leads" book, David Bird and Taf Anthias use simulations to assess which leads are most likely to be effective against different auctions. If you have a balanced hand in your 1NT range, you will have rebid problems, and will not get another chance to show a 1NT opener. Opening 1NT limits your hand, makes your partner the captain of the auction, positions your partner to use your 1NT system to find the right contract, and obstructs 1-level overcalls. Open 1NT when feasible to avoid rebid problems

    Please clarify opposition > 2c; I presume here it was natural, since you didn't say otherwise. I am less certain, if it is artificial, say the opps play Landy where 2c = the majors. At first it might not matter, but when responding I need 7:25 to inform partner if I have one or both suits stopped. Thanks

      If your partner opens 1NT and your right-hand-opponent overcalls 2C showing anything other than both major, we recommend playing your normal notrump responses using a double as Stayman. If the opponents overcall 2C or 2D showing the majors, we recommend using a defense which Larry Cohen shares. 2H = GF in C 2S = GF in D 2NT = lebensohl relay to 3C 3 of a minor = Natural, Invitational 3 of a MAJOR = GF, Shortness (0 or 1) in that MAJOR 3NT = To Play, Neither MAJOR stopped Use the 2NT lebensohl bid to show stoppers -- after the Relay to 3C : 3 MAJOR shows only that major stopped; 3NT shows both MAJORS stopped. Relaying to 2NT also lets you sign-off in 3-minor (either pass the relay with clubs or sign-off in 3D with diamonds) Using this method, when they show MAJORS, you can show either minor (Weak, Invitational, or Forcing) and can show which MAJOR(s) are stopped, and also can show both minors and shortness in a major.
