Child fun fact: 0% of twelve-year-old children want to play Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. That's the stuff that turned me off of guitar lessons when I was at the best age to learn. That, and a poorly set-up acoustic for "beginners." That said, I can see why some kids prefer acoustics because a lot of their heroes play them. Myself, as a ten-year-old in the 1970s, all I cared about was KISS. Ace Frehley had a sound that made me want to rock 'n' roll all night. After much pleading with my mum, I finally got a guitar for Christmas. The shop said I needed to learn on an acoustic before I could learn how to play an electric guitar. Fatal error. I hated it. It was so lame that I stopped going to guitar lessons and had to put up with my mum calling me a quitter for the next ten years. The guitar shop where I was taking lessons had one last chance to win me back. In the showroom was a Les Paul copy of some sort, no idea, probably Japanese in those days. It was a cherry red sunburst with a cream pickguard, just like Ace played. I was so excited to try it. They handed it to me, plugged it in, and blah. It sounded blah! It sounded like an acoustic but worse, just louder. I didn't know anything about guitars or how to adjust amplifiers, but I knew this wasn't for me. I quit. The music shop was so focused on their Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Stars that they couldn't see how a distortion pedal might have saved the day. I didn't pick up a guitar again until I was 16 when all my friends were starting punk bands.

Informative video, but you made no mention of the neck (nut) width. Isn't an acoustic guitar wider (strings spaced further apart) than an electric - doesn't that make it harder for short fingers ?

How far on are you with your guitar progress?

Thanks for the practice exercises. I had considerable trouble following what you were doing with the scales. I've been able to work on the strumming, picking, and chords. I need a more slower, in depth demonstration of the scales. I could hear what you were doing but wasn't able to see how you were doing it.

I've been playing guitar for over 40 years....everyday I change the way I hold the pick trying to find the "right way" for me.
