All this advice would go for any puppy. The one and possibly the most useful thing that you should teach your Patterdale puppy, is to retrieve. A ball or a toy or both, they are very bright! Once that has become ingrained behaviour the ball or the throw toy is the very best way to reward your dog. And to guarantee recall, one of the most difficult things for most Patterdale owners. Training treats are useful but it is best not to allow your new companion to become too food reward oriented. Never underestimate the intelligence of these little hunters, and never forget that they NEED a job! If you don’t give them an intellectually stimulating job to do that for fills at least some of their natural drives, and reward them for doing it, you will regret it, as they will invent one for themselves, and you may not like it.
