Lupophone: the World's Lowest Oboe
The Lupophone is currently the lowest instrument in the oboe family. Developed by Guntram Wolf and Benedikt Eppelsheim, it is a modern instrument lower than the Heckelphone, going down to a low F.

BUT: Sibelius doesn't play all voices in a single staff except when they are piano! That ist very frustrating. I need simple 4-part close chords for saxes in a big-band. Sibelius plays the top note only...

I once heard an orchestra from Hamburg perform Messiaen's _Des Canyons aux Étoiles_, and was astonished to hear how tellingly powerful their contrabassoon was. I was sitting in the high balcony of a very large auditorium, and this thing had a commanding presence even when heard from that far away. I'm convinced that this must have been a Contraforte. Many French composers preferred the contrabass sarrusophone to the French contrabassoon, and it is said that the sarrusophone is intended even when their scores specify "contrebasson." I've seen a French orchestration method whose entry on the French contrabassoon is simply a list of its many faults, followed by the entry on the sarrusophone which praises the instrument for its superior power, evenness and agility, citing as its only fault a weak high range. The Contraforte appears to be an ultimate solution, in that it has the power, evenness and agility of the sarrusophone, plus a stronger and much higher-reaching upper range. Also, its timbre is more truly bassoon-like, whereas the sarrusophone sounds something like a narrow-bore saxophone.

Clarinetist here. I love the sound of the lower register on this Lupophone. Please tell me though what would be the real selling point from this versus a Bassoon. It looks more modern, more in line with modern woodwind construction/manufacturing, more genre flexible than Bassoons and more powerful (a la contraforte vs contrabassoon). Besides blind tradition, why this would not displace the bassoon family? Or would this be the XXI century Sarrusophone?

This is supposed to be the tenor oboe cuz its base scale is C3--C4, same as the "bass" oboe and the heckelphone, even tho it has an extended lower range. The cor anglais, whose base scale is F3--F4, is the alto member and the bassoon, whose base scale is F2--F3 is the baritone member (many know that the bassoon isn't a true bass).

I played the bass clarinet in high school from grade 10 (when my music teacher asked me if I'd like to switch from the b flat to the bass) to OAC (Grade 13 at the time in Canada). I loved playing it, especially since I am 4'7. I am 44 years old, and I have wanted my own bass clarinet since I left high school. After being out of highschool for almost 25 years, my husband got me my very own bass clarinet for Christmas. 🙂❤ I played a little for him, and I managed to remember some of the easier notes. He got me three books (one is of christmas songs) to relearn from. It has been quite a while, and I will be working on relearning and learning some new things too as I did not know EVERY note as it was only 4 years that I played (and I was not in band). So this will be something fun for me to get back into again. 🙂

Bassoons and oboes both have double reeds, but they belong to different families due to different construction and sound characteristics. Think of the varied instruments of the brass, all sounding by the same mechanism (buzzing your lips into an open mouthpiece), but separated into horns, trumpets, trombones, tubas, cornets, and beyond.

@@harperbyrne94 Oboes, English horns, and bassoons have double reeds and conic bores. Bassoons and contrabassoons need different grip holes and flaps because of their size, that's clear. A violin and a cello are to be played differently.
