Live Instrumental Experiment with Fantom & Drum Samples
In this session, I’m experimenting with blending live performance and creativity. Sometimes, I like to play with a percussion loop, but I also want the flexibility to “cook up” something unique on the fly while still keeping things professional. Although I can do everything within the Phantom, I enjoy adding third-party drum sample libraries to bring that boutique drum machine vibe to the stage.
For this track, the drum sounds are from a custom sample map, while the rest of the instruments are powered by the Phantom.
If I take this setup further for a live gig, I would route the drum samples through the sub outputs for separate mixing. However, for solo performances, I’d likely stick with r...

      @@how2playgospel INC+/- didn't work for me while in Keyboard Switch Group Pad mode. However, I could assign: - Channel 1 to the parts 1 and 2 - Channel 2 to parts 3 and 4 - Channel 3 to oarts 5 and 6 Using the first 8 parts in Part View with Scene Remain on. And the sound didn't cut off that way either when switching I could send Channel Change messages to the Roland, but for some reason the keys that controlled the sound changes were the controller keyboard ones and not the Fantom-06 keys. Still I believe some pedalboard should send Channel + messages via Standard 5 pin Midi connections. If you have one and try, feel free to share the results and let me know :)

    David, your willingness to share your skills with others is deeply commendable. But the quality of your video footage is unfortunate. Because it is impossible to watch it without a tool at hand. Suggestion find a song that you plan to perform or learn to perform later. Pay attention to what sounds are being played. Write it down as best as you can describe it. Then go to your keyboard and try to make a combination based on the tune your are referencing. You can go back and forth between listening to the record and your custom created sound to get them as close as possible. Bonus tip: ask yourself if you were the musician that played on then record, what would you have done differently? Make those adjustment to have a version of the sound you would have played for the artist given the same opportunity to re-record the original record.

      I always suggest going out to play the physical keyboards you consider buying. For most show environments where I perform, I can pick between the internal pianos and get thru the show with no issues. I would love to have the flagship Fantom too - to take advantage of the dedicated 128 note polyphony allocated just to the VPiano, but you won’t be disappointed with the 0series. Plenty of sonic options and super customizable with the on board EQ, effects, and limitless layering combinations.

      It's still the wild-west between hardware synth companies on how many digital inputs provided via USB into our DAWs. The most recent The Fantom and Fantom0 series allows simultaneous import of all 32 channels at one time (16 stereo pairs). Kronos 2 allows a single stereo pair. The Nord Electro 6, seems to only allow USB for USB-Midi (or to tether to the patch editing software) No digital audio tranfer for firmware version 1.20.

    Can the drum tones be edited sufficiently on the Fantom to negate buying a standalone drum machine.

    • @how2playgospel
      @how2playgospel 7 месяцев назад

      You have about 2 GB of memory allocated just towards your sample data. So if you already have access to Drum samples that you like to use your production, you can load those into your drums. I would even locate your favorite drum samples on a thumb drive and then load him as needed.

    • @how2playgospel

      @philipslade6810 new drum feature I found would be an excellent response to your earlier question. For every mappped drum kit, you can use the six knobs below the display screen to 1.adjust the pitch

    • @how2playgospel
      @how2playgospel 6 месяцев назад

      2. Turn on eq 3. Adjust 3 bands of eq. The mindblowing thing is that this six can apply those different settings for each individual mapped drum on that given set. Practical example. Say you want to tune the Tom’s on a particular drum kit be a major triad in the key of your song? Imagine you like the kick but you wish it was to pitched two semitones lower? Imagine you like the hihats but you like them to be more silent - you can turn up the high for just Gb1,Ab1, and Bb2

      The keyboard has 16 MIDI channels (one per track). in your Mixer/Sequencer window its numbered 1-16 from top to bottom - the sounds are automatically assigned 1-16. You can create a blank song (or multi mode set) with your 16 selected sounds,

    • @how2playgospel
      @how2playgospel 8 месяцев назад

      The other option is to set them to the midi channel intentionally. For instance - do you want sounds one and two playing simultaneously? set both sounds 1&2 to the same MidiChannel. (Say midi channel 2). Whenever you select drumPad 2 in the quick select Mode, your two instrument patches will be available on the keys. The only limitation is you only have 16 total patches to mix and match this way. On the later iterations of Fantom keyboards, you now have 16 Keyboard Groups which mix and match any of the 16 patches giving you more layering options. But for the sake of having one patch at a time that you can quickly switch between 16 sounds for a given, show - This keyboard is seamless.

    • @how2playgospel
      @how2playgospel 8 месяцев назад

      You might need to consider getting the flagship Fantom instead. IMO. This product is intended to be a lot of things. Pattern playback, rhythm section for rehearsal, discrete drum machine, sample player, sampler, pattern recorder, talk box/vocoder, entry level synth editor, tone wheel organ). Most of the modern synths can handle layering 2-3 instruments at a time without noticeable note stealing. We only have 10 fingers, so For music that requires more note playback, like a classical concerto - you are rarely gonna play more the one sound at a time. Synths historically are known more for Phatt sound and larger sonic palette and less polyphony; whereas Digital piano as none for more polyphony but feature options. This is the budget friendly option from the Fantom series. The Fantom 6-7-8 all have the V-piano with its separate polyphony. Modern computers and soft synths have affected our expectations of modern synths. Imagine this board has 265MB of expansion memory and 2GB of sample memory. Most computers from 2011 have a minimum of 8GB of onboard ram. So for the cost of creating a standalone tool that does most of the of what it takes a DAW on a high power computer to do, polyphony isn’t a huge concern for me. Polyphony in-general is only a playing live challenge. Hopefully my video shows you a means or splitting the keyboard in a way that you aren’t mixing out your available polyphony while playing. Note are boards for twice the cost - that has significantly lower polyphony (1-8 notes total). Other manufacturers have a higher have no polyphony cap - but their are live performances boards only with no internal sequencing options. If you intend on getting a single board to replace the unlimited polyphony of say an acoustic grand piano, this isn’t the only board of choice. But if you need one board that can handle most of the variety ask you want to throw its way, you can’t govern with this one. The few things it doesn’t do well - are in the flagship model.

      as of today's date ( May 16th 2024) the only hardware keyboard i've ever played/purchased that appears to have ZERO polyphony issues is the Nord Electro 6. All of the modern synths manufacturers that i physically purchased hardware keyboards and used them for a live shows. The more sounds you layer, you will start to hear notes drop out. This is only an issue for live playing. However, if you are recording one sound at a time in the studio on its individual track, polyphony won't be an issue. Playing live and needing access to huge layered instrument stacks from one physical hardware keyboard is where I seem to notice subtle Polyphony challenges.
