Hello Chad I am in process to do the same conversion on a CGE mount that I got..... Can you tell me what steppers and reduction gear you are using? many thanks in advance.
Do those gearboxes that direct couple to the stepper motors, have much backlash? I only ask, as i am about to build a large mount, and i already have 2 of those gearboxes, with a 100:1 ratio. If they are ok to use with onstep, then i will use them. Subscribed, and going to watch the previous 7 videos. Thanks.
Depends on where you put them i your drive train. The EG Planetary's have backlash, but not as much as the MG series. Also the MG series uses plastic gears. I would avoid the MG gearboxes. The EG series uses metal.
@@GrayDigitalArts They are the EG series from stepper online, same as those you are using, and will be in the drive train position as yours are, although will be direct coupled to the worm drives. Thanks
very good. it's a pity that we can't buy this in Russia(
Great work Chad the mount sounds sweet
Excelente trabajo.
Great job Chad !!!!!
Места там очень мало (
Thank you <3
Chad. is there any chance you will make a custom bracket for cge Pro ?
This bracket may work on the CGE Pro. I have not tried it. The only reason i went to this extreme on the CGE is because the motor boxes are not removable. The CGE Pro conversion kit i add an adapter plate and make new motor motor boxes. Much easier for a customer to install. graydigitalarts.com/product-category/cge-pro-stepper-motor-conversion-kits/
congrats !!!
Did you have any kind of problems with phd2 and Onstep? It seems the calibration take a looking time and it goes to error 😅 did you have any tutorial about?
I do not know of any common problem with OnStep and PHD2. I do not have a tutorial of OnStep and PHD. It works like any other ASCOM or INDI based mount in PHD.
I've had my CGE Pro conversion from Chad Gray now for over 4 years now and, PHD2's 2 guiding has been phenomenal every time, no issues whatsoever as long as the scope is balanced and properly polar aligned..it works like a charm! Good enough for exoplanet work....
How do you change the draw length?
@ChadGrays ... To shorten a long story ... Celestron CGEM-5 and parts are now Obsolete and unavailable... Motor control boards are failing.... this is a perfect solution to make a 65 pound paper weight functional again.... It's 1 year later from your videos on this and I'm wondering if you finished your tinkering with this using Onstep and if you're willing to share your solution with CGEM-5 paperweight owners?
The easiest is switch to stepper motors and use OnStep to control them.
Good job, reduced the play to a minimum on mine. Which GT2 did you use?
Great to hear! I used 20T on both
Whe can sell our old motors to celestron ,so they have some spare parts ahahha🤣
Soon, very soon! I have three people beta testing. The stepper motors are SOooo quite! When i would tell it to slew to the home position after a night of observing i could not hear the motors until i was about 3 feet away from the mount.
Interesting you say about the Allen wrenches stripping out the ones I use I use are of decent quality but one of the grub screws rounded off inside the gear housing on my CGE pro so I had no choice but to drill it out. It wasn't a big deal as it's never ever going back to being standard but could be worth mentioning.
Yeah, any time you are dealing with smaller than m4 size bolts, grub screws etc your chances of stripping something out gets higher. Heat is the biggest enemy of loc tite type compounds and i do mention that in the paper documentation. I mention the wrenches in the video as i have found people will use a wrench that is almost the right size and that is a sure recipe for stripping things out. Wrenches that fit properly and give you good feedback on what is happening as you are using them will greatly increase your success rate.
I may be a little stupid and ignorant, but in my opinion, what you people who do tutorials are doing wrong is the fact that there is no equal, you are convinced that everyone already has all the basics on these products, but in this way, you only send people in confusion. I've been trying to get onstep to work for 2 weeks, I've watched a thousand tutorials, and I had to reinstall windows due to the mess you made me make. I think that, thanks to you, I will give up astronomy.
I have been at OnStep for 4 years and I am still learning. It is extremely complex. A massive mix of subjects like electrical, mechanical and software engineering. Astronomy is already hard enough. OnStep is not for the faint of heart. Good luck! Sometimes it is best to cut your losses and move on to something that makes you happier
It's not a question of "heart", it's a question of mental predisposition, my mind is not suited to software, and I agree, but the fact that you are making too much confusion in making tutorials, each with its own drivers, plug ins , platforms etc etc, but how many are there? Take a look around the web and you'll see. Even the AI is confused, I tried to ask it a few questions about it and it replied that "there are too many variations and that it cannot be precise", in fact what it managed to tell me was even more confusing... .@@ChadGrays
Thank you for this, I have trying with a mobile app and getting nowhere. Followed your video , it made everything easy. Had my first night imaging thanks to you
Help pls when i connect onstep to ascom my i saw my data ia 00:00 how to fix it
What board did you use and if this is Terrans like product? Thanks
thats what i'm searching for.. do you have stl files for me?
Fantastic video, just set up onstep on my EQ-5 mount built it all running. Just needed to connect it brilliant video. Thank you so much.
wish it had cone error correction
I believe a 3 star alignment will remove the cone error you may be experiencing?
Great job Chad I've used helicoils in the past for repairs & often given great results, fortunately touch wood my CGE pro threads are good so should be ok for a good few years.
Thanks! I like them in aluminum for sure. I used them in an aluminum head on an engine once. The exhaust side of the head/header expanded and contracted enough to break the outer studs. The helicoil repair of those threads have held up really well over the years.
All I can say is the CGE pro kit you sell the motors have more than enough torque to slew the RASA 11 around, the first light I finally got to use it I hadn't balanced it properly but still managed .27 guiding. Now the balancing has been improved I'm getting anything between .16 to .08 now. I haven't tried my 10" Newtonian on it yet but if what I'm getting is anything to go by I'm sure it will cope easily.
Hi mate. In your calculation you have forgot to account for the wight of the steel rod, which is probably much heavier, than your washers were. Since the rod is heavier than the washers, it will impact the resulting torque more than the washers are, so the answer will be way off. Approach is correct though.
Thanks' for the input! I did weigh the aluminum rod, 3d printed hook and I include it in the calculation. Maybe i forgot to mention it in the video.
If you are using a belt instead of a worm, are you not just trading backlash for elasticity of the belt? The belt makes sense before a worm, where there is no point of oscillatory coupling adding random impulses through the elasticity. How does the belt help in this instance? Is the elasticity really better than the backlash in a worm gear? Does the worm gear not have the added benefit of balancing east heavy? Would a worm with a spring tensioner not be better than both of these options?
Thank you very much. I'm looking at an onstep-based harmonic mount called UMI-17 from China
how’d the backlash turn out for this design? i can’t seem to find a design with low backlash for my diy eq mount 😂
Well done! I think i would of went for a Li-Ion 18650 cell or 2. They are safer, more capacity and available everywhere. It would make the case 18mm plus the plastic thickness. Or use the 14500 (AA size) Li-Ion cells. Thanks for sharing.
Me again Chad is it possible you can do a video of how I get ASCOM hub I’ve down loaded on pc but all I get is this ASCOM diagnostic box turns up
If you hit the windows button on the bottom left or middle (win11) then type "ASCOM Hub" into the search the program should pop up. Then you can add a shortcut to it if you want with a right click.
Nice video, Chad! PHD2 was giving me a lot of trouble last night and I decided to give Ekos guider a try. My guiding was not great, although I was imaging a target very low above horizon. I wonder if you are still using Ekos guider and if there are any gotchas you learned since you published this video?
Hi Alex! My observing has been put on hold for the last 6months as we built a sunroom where i used to do my photography. I will have a new deck built this summer with cement pier installed so i can pick back up on observing and photography. I do believe the Ekos guider has had many improvements since this video. A lot of times on PHD i start changing settings trying to improve things and i quickly learn it is my seeing and i need to go back to PHD defaults and that is the best i can do for my conditions.
Chad I’ve just got a OnStep kit for my vixen gp I’ve connected like you said I got on screen my telescope but when I try to slew it dose nothing
This is all new to me sorry should have said that first and my know how with pc is zero on know how 😢

Thanks to you and this video I got it sorted just wish I found it 4 hours before I was trying to wing it lol
Hi Chad I just thought I'd say thanks for building this kit as for one I don't have the no how especially with building up a system of my own. I've got it all running in the observatory now with NINA, PHD, ASCOM & done some guided imaging with readings of 0.3 to 0.1 Arcseconds which I'm over the Moon about as it's handling the RASA 11 with ease now unlike the Skywatcher mount which was maxed out. I'm so glad I took the plunge & bought one now so here's to many more years of use out of the mount now. Thanks & clear skies!!
I've finally put my CGE Pro Onstep in the observatory today so hopefully I'll get to use it soon, took me a bit of a while to get it running one was due to a a dead USB lead & other on user error but now I'm able to operate via NINA remotely from home. Thanks again for this kit as I've now got a mount that can carry some weight. Hopefully I'll get a first light soon thanks again & clear skies!!
Hi Chad, Very cool! I was wondering about a CGE, not a pro just a CGE. I have had one for years. Went into storage for a few years. But when I finally got it back out it stopped working correctly. Can this kit you describe here be retrofitted to my CGE? Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my comment and respond. Regards, John
I am afraid not the motor mounts are not the same.
I did not see you message. I would make sure you have the right UTC offset. I use the Android App to synchronize date/time/GPS and the smart web server to synchronize date/time/GPS
Saludos y cielos despejados.
Nice. Thanks

Hey chad,Quastion about the meridian flip,i set the auto on,but it did not flip. I left the option meridian flip, pause at home off. Should i do that one also on ? And what does it do after it paused at Home? Will it continue to go to the target ,or do i have to d oit myself ? Because of the longer dark nights now,i start in the north early,so the south meridian is around 1 o clock in the night. Now it just stops due to the limit and disconect. greetings John. p.s i have more tiem, will fix my videos . 😎
Pause at home is when the mount goes to flip it goes to the home position first. Then flips to the target. It is supposed to help with cable management. I usually have it on. Are you using software to control the mount? Usually if you are doing photography of an object you need to configure your software to tell the mount to slew the same target when you get in the merdian window. This slew command to that target will cause on step to make a decision. If the target is inside of the meridian flip window then flip and slew to target. I made this document for KStars, but it applies to Nina and other mount software also. docs.google.com/document/d/11NlWvWyI5RxN8NLnYze65buc2b1wekqkZmgQoIBw91M/edit?usp=sharing

I dont suppose you could do q video about the arduino setup part for this could you please ?? I'm so confused on how to sort it...I have the telescope moving about with onstep and the hand controller, but I now wanted to put the webserver on .....
I follow these instructions on the Wiki onstep.groups.io/g/main/wiki/26881
Hey Chad,my CGE PRO conversion is still doing great. GOTO is pinpoint every time. guiding is awesome. im very busy imaging the last time, ill try to finish the video i made with the conversion. on the onstep io page is also a great manual for the smart handcontroller. greetings John
Thanks for the update John! It is always good to hear a status update.
This looks pretty promising, Chad! What's the payload capacity like? I hope you succeed 🤩
I have a smaller redcat 51 that the auto guiding is dead on less than 1 arc second. So weight does matter on my guiding accuracy. I have not spent time trying to figure out why i have been enjoying the imaging sessions with it. I need to post an update on youtube. I will try to do that this week.
so ..does it run already ? p.s. good bbq set in the back haha.. good weekend.
