Making of Carl Fredricksen Up Costume
Просмотров 8 тыс.3 года назад
I made one of these out of pink insulation foam and loved how it turned out. It got lots of attention and I even rented it out to many people all over the country. Someone even make a video all over the streets of NYC with him. But He was rough and I wanted to make a better one and also be able to make copies for anyone that wanted to buy or rent it. So this was my process. enjoy!
Audition Video for the show "Making It"
Просмотров 4473 года назад
I've created so many things over the years that I decided to send an audition video to be on the NBC show "Making It" with hosts Nick Offerman and Amy Poehler. While I didn't get chosen for the show I was glad I took the time to compile this video of some of the things I've made over the years. Take a look and maybe something will inspire you to create something as well.

    Genius!!! Thank you for sharing your puppetry construction, and articulation skills to Make A2 come alive in front of our very eyes!! How would you maybe Rx to preserve the foam parts from degrading by use...It looks like you have maybe employed a bit of paper mache (at 1:10 in the video), tissue paper to stabilize the construction? Using the faux Amaranthus tendrils was genius! May I ask what is the hinge tape at the skull... perhaps linen art framing matting tape? please explain the faux hand construction...sorry, saw that in the bottom comments. May I humbly ask if you used a finishing spray? Love, LOve, LOVE!

    • @masonbarton
      @masonbarton 3 года назад

      Thanks for the kind comments. I did paper maché for a few reasons. 1 - I like that it makes all the added elements looks cohesive. 1 - I like the subtle wrinkles it does. 3 - It protects the foam and gives a better painting surface. Especially if you use spray paint as that would eat the foam. The hinge you are referring to is just extra green felt I just hot glued on. I did coat the eyes and teeth and inside the mouth with a high gloss varnish and the rest with a matte finish. As far as the hand and arm construction, maybe check my blog post about this. I posted more information there. amasonsayswhat.blogspot.com/2016/10/audrey-ii-from-little-shop-of-horrors.html

    Hello Mason! The illusion is amazing! Would you share your tips for creating the "wrap around" hand portion?

    • @masonbarton
      @masonbarton 3 года назад

      Thank you! I bought a plastic fake hand at a halloween store and took a heat gun to it to mold it to better shape it to look like its holding the pot. then repainted it to my skin colors. I cut out a piece of the pot about halfway down to be able to put my bicep in. I made a strip of the green felt that attaches to the pot and loops over my bicep to the other side of the pot so that the pot basically is attached to that arm and I dont have to worry about holding it with my other hand. I put foam in the bottom half of the pot that my elbow rests on and covered with green felt. I got an old jacket and cut a hole in the front next to where the sleeve starts. Thats where your real arm comes out of. Then I saran wrapped my real arm and then package taped on top of that then cut it off my arm. I taped together where I cut and stuffed the fake arm with old grocery bags. I attached the fake hand at the end of the fake arm. Build a nice shoulder area that can sort of cup over your real shoulder. Then I made tape belts that wrapped around my body so the arm felt real secure to me and wouldn't just fall off. lol. I velcroed the fake hand to the pot but you could glue it even. Anyway, hope that helps. You inspired me to take some pics and I'll post them on my blog post about this. That may also help. I know others have asked as well. Thanks for reaching out.

    • @masonbarton

      Its basically paper mâché. I used a mixture of water and Elmers glue then just a non texture paper towel and cover everything then let dry and prime for painting. I like the texture the maché gives and makes everything look cohesive. You could google how to make spell books for more information on the technique. I just notice you ask this question a while ago and I never replied. sorry. hope this helps.

    This is the best tutorial that I've seen so far! I just have a couple questions. 1. How did you cut the head so there is space in the mouth? I understand the sharpie marks at 0:22 show the basic outline of where you cut the outside. Did you just estimate and guess the amount of space needed for in the mouth? 2. In the leaves of the stem, is there a sleeve? Or do you just stick your hand in? 3. When using modeling clay, I noticed that the thumb goes on the bottom half, and the middle three fingers go on the top half of audrey. Where does the pinky go? Other than that, you did a good job of documenting the process! This is the best video I could find!

    • @masonbarton

      so sorry I haven't replied. Just noticed I missed some comments. Yes I just hollowed out the head using a hot wire foam carver but you could try other tools. basically just left about an inch or so thickness everywhere. yes the stem is a green felt sleeve that I glued leaves onto. It is attached to the head of the plant as well. the thumb and pinky control the bottom half of the plant and the other fingers control the top and the tongue. Hope all this helps. thanks for the comment
