I believe that there is a place and a time for overthinking your training. That place is here. The time is now.
I try exercise and training things, do races, have fun. Then I overanalyze the things, debrief the races, and try to figure out what I've learned.

Why I'll Never Finish Learning to Climb | Couch to 6A Update
A year ago, I set out to conquer climbing skills through a bingo board of techniques. But climbing - especially outdoors - turned out to be more than ticking boxes. Inspired by Enchantment by Katherine May, I realized climbing is a deep terrain of endless learning and subtle discovery.
Instead of mastering individual skills, I embraced the messy, evolving journey of climbing. My season culminated in “Independence Day” - my first time being 'it' outdoors, setting routes, and handling safety. It wasn't about hard climbs but hard-earned knowledge.
Climbing taught me to let go, stay curious, and recognize that learning never really ends. Here's to more deep terrain in 2025!

How To Create A Training Camp | For normal people with full-time jobs
I love this Laura - really interesting to contemplate shallow and deep terrain in one's life. Beautiful footage!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Here’s what I learned from all the climbing videos I’ve watched for beginners (before I watch your video & there will undoubtedly be differences): Wear clothes that allow free movement and aren’t too tight. Avoid hoodies, as they can snag or get in the way. Remove watches, rings, and accessories to prevent injuries or damage. For climbing shoes, choose a snug fit with no air pockets when you move or put pressure on footholds. The heel should sit firmly against the back, and your big toe should touch the front without causing pain. Poorly fitting shoes can hinder progress or cause unnecessary discomfort. Warm up before climbing by doing light cardio and joint mobilizations, focusing on ankles, wrists, shoulders, and hips. Start with easy routes to complete your warm-up. Place your feet carefully by watching where you step until secure. Use the toe of your shoe, not the entire sole, and leverage the inside or outside edges for precision. When no footholds are available, try smearing: press the front of your shoe sole against the wall or a volume and apply weight. To climb higher without fear, learn to fall correctly. Land feet first, then your buttocks, with arms crossed on your chest, and tuck your head inward. Roll sideways if necessary, and avoid landing on your ankles, wrists, or neck. Climb with straight arms to conserve energy, relying mostly on your legs, which are much stronger than your arms. Always maintain three points of contact, and position yourself under handholds to balance better. Advance your technique with moves like the flag, using your opposite foot for balance, and staying close to the wall with your hips for efficient leg pushes. Practice advanced techniques such as heel hooks, toe hooks, drop knees (down knees), dynos, bicycles, and smearing. Refine your basics by focusing on foot placements, foot switches, and traverses (sideways climbs). Get familiar with different holds like jugs, slopers, pinches, and two- or three-finger pockets. Visualize better climbing strategies by descending after an attempt and rethinking your approach to be more efficient and avoid unnecessary movements. Grades indicate climbing difficulty. In France, easier routes have lower numbers, starting at 4a and reaching up to 9c. For example, 4a, 4b, 4c, 5a, 5b, 5c, 6a, 6a+, 6b, 6b+, and so on. Don’t hesitate to try problems slightly above your current level. Follow safety and courtesy rules: ensure the landing area is clear, respect climbers already on the wall, avoid monopolizing routes if others are waiting, and encourage fellow climbers without giving away solutions unless asked. Rest adequately: 30 seconds after an early fall, 1-2 minutes for mid-route falls, and 4-5 minutes after strenuous moves. Take at least one rest day between sessions to prevent injuries. Build strength naturally by climbing frequently but cautiously, as tendons strengthen more slowly. Avoid overexertion and do strength exercises only after warming up.
I didn't think at all about the mental part, the mindset. We have retained many similar points. Great video, well illustrated, GG. And have fun 😁
My obsession is with the mindset, as you can see from my other videos ;)
Please keep making videos as you progress in climbing. Please. I commit to watching them all.
As long as you keep watching them, I'll keep making them!
:o this is an amazing video! I had about 10 climbing videos on a to watch list but then this came, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! I hope it wasn't too overwhelming! 😂
Ah man, you are so tenacious. Show us some of the others tackling the same boulders as well?
Flapper... needs a dictionary entry please
Flapper (noun) Climbing: A glorious badge of honor in the form of a chunk of skin that has partially torn away from your finger. Often earned on sharp holds or overzealous dynos. Equal parts painful and satisfying, it signals you gave it your all. Expect blood, tape, and the smug satisfaction of showing it off to your friends.
Awesome vid your editing skills have come a long way in a short time 🦾🦾
Thanks! Still working on it, but glad it's at least getting better 😂
RUclips failed to recommend this video to me. If I had seen this I would have been somewhat more prepared "climbing with you" a couple of weeks ago. You good at this stuff!
You did well picking up the lingo!
@@LauradeLange True, its a start hey? But its all about the climbing, no?
Interesting... you come across not very positive about the process, yet you did it and got through it! Well done. Will be Interesting to hear your take on it in 6 months time. Because you sure did a lot of stuff in those 75 days, it seems you achieved a lot as well?
I'd like to do "75 Soft" where I build in more of the things that help with autoregulation and building grace!
Loving this series!
Great vid Laura - better you than me :)
Thanks 😅
Stay soft! I like it.
Do you think I should do 75 Soft? 🤔😂
@@LauradeLange I think that would be great build! Love that. And great apples for apples comparison. I await your vids!
I think internalizing failure can be beneficial, but only if you make it about specific things you can change. Like "I messed up because I did X, in the future I will do Y instead" rather than "I messed up because I'm a bad person". I would agree, though, that sometimes you do everything right and still fail, and in those cases it's healthier to see it as a result of external factors (which it usually is) rather than something wrong with yourself.
I think you're absolutely right! I'm coming at this with a whole bunch of baggage, of course, but I don't ever look at a situation and think, "wow, I did everything right!" I always find something to fix, tweak, etc. And I worry that that gets in the way of me trying again/trying hard. Because it's so demotivating to always be wrong. So I'm playing with trying again, because maybe the world is just different today, even if I am not yet better 🤷
I think it also depends on the individuals motivations and inspirations. I know some internally motivated people may find self-improvement to be easier. Interesting take.
Yeah, makes sense that it'd be a personality thing! I'm super internally motivated. Guess I'm just trying out different approaches to see what effect it has!
Interesting take on the Internal vs. External Locus of Control discussion 🤔 Thanks for sharing!
As with all training things, I think it depends on the adaptation you want for your training goals. I'm working on resilience and trying hard, so playing around with blaming the world! 😂
Did you go back?…🤔
Not this year! I'm focusing on adventures a bit closer to home 😊
Too true!
My first thought will never be to sign up for a 100 mile bike race
One day, it might be. And then you can say: Not today, Satan! 😂 Jk, it's a really nice race distance! Just not for me this year 😊
😂😂😂
There will be loads of pain and self-doubt until you send your hardest route ever and you will not look back.
Soooooooooooon Gospel 😉
I can't believe this only has 53 views. Beautiful and inspiring.
Yay! Glad you enjoyed it! Do you have any plans for your next adventure? :)
In the last couple of weeks I just fell in love with this race. I don't know why but my inner voice tells me to go with it, although I am anticipating a huge amount of physical and mental suffering. Your video has showed me that sometimes that is the whole purpose of it: to be able to find a why within a very hard journey. That is the prize. Your message is extraordinary! Congratulations!
Listen to your inner voice!! It was a great race, even though it wasn't easy :)
@@LauradeLange Thanks for all the insights!
Wow, great video & contents. Nice summary of 11 years of hard work and while having fun.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🥳
Nice.
nice
Niiiice
Okay. We need to talk.
Oh no I'm scared 😂😂😂😂😭😭😭😭
Oh no, i think your mic didn't pick up your voice. Or maybe you forgot to ad dit in.
Imagine 35 minutes of no voice, I would cry 😭😂 I think the mic is busted, only one side of the sound recorded 😭
@@LauradeLange When recording a mono source (like a microphone) to a stereo track, the sound will usually only register on one side, typically left (but in your case right). Depending on your video editing software, there are easy googleable fixes to get the sound in the middle again. Good luck!
Awesome, thanks for the advice!
Have fun climbing. Its a great sport 😊
Thanks! Luckily I have some good, experienced climbers to guide me, so I'm learning lots!
The only thing I can think about is; what if those glasses fell off 🤔lol
Perhaps the elephant could pick them up for me? 🤔😉
One day we will see Loftie in shorts.
But today is not that day...
weird way to pass the time.
Paintball gun
You leave it alone
I'd climb somewhere else instead
exactly
Where? It is one of the most popular climbing areas in the country? Bees are removed all the time
Maybe it's the bees home and not a climbers home then...
love your "average human being does climbing with casual zeal" approach =D curious to see how quickly you can improve, very analytic like someone said
Thank you, that's a lovely description of the beginner journey 😂😂😂
You will learn climbing quick with how well you understand yourself and all your early inquiries about climbing technique. That kind of attention to detail pays off tenfold in climbing. Loved the vid! Except the part with the gym noise.
Awww thanks so much! I won't give up (and hopefully get better, including at silencing the gym noise 😂😅)
you got this!
Thank you! Tiny gains is the way forward, I think!
This is such a great concept, where is this one? And are there more events in the pipeline? (Well done btw)
I completed my first Backyard Ultra in December. Made it 8 laps for a 33 mile, but I knew I had more in me. Good luck on the next one.
I did one in September, broke some toes on lap two and went two more after that. Already signed up for next year.
Excellent!! I'm really enjoyed the mental part of the experience - I definitely will give it another go!
🤣 Oh no!! Not the toes!!
… with that accent you either from Slapstad or a Sandtonist… what the crap are you doing getting yourself covered in volcano ash? Do tell 😂😂😂
We all set off the metal detectors in the airport on the way home, I wonder if volcanic ash is metallic? 🤣🤔
Is a goody one!
Thanks! It was super fun to make!!

So proud of you two! 🤩 Please keep following your heart/curiosity!!! It ensures your life is unique, lived/experienced and true to yourself. This remains true, regardless of where your curiosity may lead you in future - doing ultra events or taking up stamp collecting.
We will! I think we may be privileged enough to experience many more adventures in our future!
Thanks for the explanation of whats going on it really clears things up
Any time! 😉
As a mother I love this window into your cycling world, girls. These are enriching life experiences. Glad to know you both. ❤
