One of the things we love to carry at The Quilt Asylum is Australian Designers. Australian designers such as Jen Kingwell, Karen Styles, Megan Manwaring and Kathy Doughty think outside of the box on their designs. Their blocks are different and make you think harder and learn new techniques. These are not traditional designs, or have some sort of traditional twist. To view our Australian Design...

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I am doing Jen Kingwell’s Pick-a-Petal. I didn’t think I would like hand piecing but the more I do it, the more I like it. This tutorial is an affirmation for me! Would love to know where the teeny pins come from that you are using.
I’m doing Pick a Petal too, and I’m loving the hand piecing! I thought it would be way too fussy for me, but it’s very peaceful and satisfying. So glad to know I’m not the only one researching all of these hand piecing skills.
As a newbie, this was so easy to view & so informative. THANK YOU!
What pins are you using that your able to go over them?
I learned a lot from you! Thank you for sharing this video with us and for sharing your knowledge. I am going to start my first project today and feel so much more confident after seeing your video. Have a wonderful day!!
Can’t wait!
Your video is very beautiful. I like it a lot. I have been trying to talk to you for a long time. I am waiting for your response. Please give me a chance to talk to you. I am a professional digital marketer and RUclips marketing expert. I can help you. I can promote your channel.💗
Why not use a sewing machine?
WOW THAT MAKES SUCH A DIFFRENCE. I AM GOING TO USE GLUE FOR NOW ON. THAT NEEDLE THREDER IS MY NEXT ITEM.
Do you use templates to cut your fabrics? Does the template show where to mark the dots at the edges?
Excellent tutorial, thank you!
I've been buying the clear plastic cutting boards from the dollar store and tracing patterns onto them, transcribing all the notes, etc. Your technique is much easier. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for this video. I am hand sewing a rag quilt and was wondering how to make the intersections of seams more secure when I sew the stripes together. Going to do this method.
I’m still confused after watching the intersections part.. Are you basically going back and forth through the same spot a few times? Is that what she calls making a loop? I love thé vidéo but i got kind of stuck on that part. and it’s what I need to improve.
Excellent video I have been going crazy(first y seams!)
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thank you for your vedio ,wold like to do this ,now I believe I can after watching you love the lessons ,thank you in ohio
My Bernina has an extra stitch. Excellent advice. You can always pivot needle down and backtrack
Marti Michell’s deluxe corner trimmer has all the dots for all the angles to include trimming. Helps for the spatially challenged (me!). I highly recommend. Thanks for video. This is 45 degree angles but same process for any angle
Now for something totally different.... Hand Piecing 2
Do you treat the edges of the fabric with anything to keep it from fraying from all the handling? It just looks so perfect when you’re done.
I am so excited to find this video! I live in a very small apartment and have to save my space but I desperately want to make a quilt! Thank you for also showing the no knot method! had no idea that was possible.
Do you have any videos on preparing and cutting the fabric?
A little over three years later and allergies are still really bad in Texas right now.
Thank you so much for making this!! I especially appreciate the focus on both of your hands working together. I have been sewing with a machine for years and just recently starting my hand sewing journey and no one mentioned that my hands should work together lol. I'm hoping to hand piece a log cabin quilt for my mom and this has been super helpful. Thank you!
Thanks for this great tutorial! It was exactly what I was looking for! I’ll be a curved piecing queen, thanks to you!
Woo woo I’m handing piecing and haven’t quilted since very young. It’s hard to find great info on hand piecing and hand quilting. Thank you so much! Much appreciated.
I have looked at so many of Y seams tutorial that they did so much taking and Not showing the fabric of how it’s done, but I was determined to fine the right Tutorial and BaM I found you, thank you so much, your Explanation rocked my World to understand perfectly, now I can feel comfortable doing my Y-seams, thank you so much 😉
Love your instruction. Thank you 🥰👏
Thank you! You make it look easy!
Excellent video. Very easy to understand. Thank you.
I've started to hand piece and I love it. Prefer it to machine piecing. Relaxing. I'm marking my seam lines but my blocks end up too small. I've heard a scant 1/4 inch seam will go a long way to solving my problem . Do u sew along the line or short of it .
Love all these handy tips and tricks!
Do you recommend certain rotary cutter blades for cutting multiple fabrics?
May I be able to acquire this hand piecing starter kit?
The Quilt Asylum is now under new ownership. Send an e-mail to info@thequiltasylum.com to see if they are still stocking this kit. Regards, Susan Allen
Wow, this was a really nice tutorial! All the other ones I tried watching either explained too much at once or nothing much at all. :) Thank you miss Allen!
Hi! Love your saying,"I am not a knotter", do you handle quilt layers the same way? or just on piecing....?
I do use knots when hand quilting. I "pop" the knot under the surface and bury it in the batting.
So glad I found you. NO ONE quilts by hand anymore, it seems. Ugh...I still do and glad to learn these tips from you. Thank you.
This really helped me understand sewing the Y seam!! Thank you! I DID cringe when I saw you sew over your pins though. LOL. 45 plus years of me sewing and having it grilled into my brain not to sew over my pins. I have a few times and busted needle and pin parts all over. 🤣🤣
LOL, nothing like watching paint dry. Your video was so helpful. I having been quilting for a few years, but have wanted to make a quilt by hand for as long as can remember. I have been watching videos like crazy 😜 and today I found yours, very helpful, today is the day I start hand piecing! Thanks for a great video!
Yay! I'm so glad you found it useful. You will LOVE the steady pace of hand piecing.
Oops. Got it: google finger pin cushion 😂👏
Great tute! Thank you 🥰👏 Love your finger pin cushion. Where can I purchase one? :)
Thank you for a very informational video. I was struggling with sewing diamonds together. Your video made it so much easier.
I'm wondering if you double thread your needle? I always do to make sure it is never coming apart. I don't know if that's something other quilter's do or not lol. Great class I haven't quilted in years since mama passed away so I'm refreshing my memory. Thank you for the clear instructions. Blessings from NM
I do not double thread. I find the Aurifil 50wt thread to be strong enough as a single strand.
@@thequiltasylum I'll have to try that's thread. One thing we do have in my tiny Town is a quilt shop. Thank you for the tip. Blessings from NM
Love it. Thank you
You are so thorough, thank you so much! I hate having to knot thread all the time so I love your back stitching tip!
Is this product primarily for diagonal sewing or will it help with sewing a straight line too? I see you can use it for a .25 inch seam but what if that line is covered? Thanks.
i totally agree!!! I have purchased them for several friends!!
I use Inklingo to print the lines on the back of the fabric. It simplifies so much. Inklingo can be found on FB onLindaFranz.com. He site and technique are marvelous. Thank you so much for this video. It’s great!
Very helpful, well made video. I look forward to seeing more.
could you open the seams and sew them down?
