Mike Vrable should have been the next coach after Belichick. Belichick is not the greatest coach of all time for so many reasons. In 11 years without Tom Brady Belichick has 1 playoff win. Brady went to Tampa and won a Super Bowl without Belichick right away while Belichick struggled mightily without Brady as his quarterback. Belichick was 5-11 his first year in New England and had a meeting with his coaches before starting the second year. In this meeting he told his coaches to put their houses up for sale because he thought that for a second time he was going to be fired. Belichick started his second season 0-2 and then in the next game the starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe got hurt which gave Tom Brady the chance to play. This is when the Patriots took off. Belichick was an under 500 coach before he was able work with Brady in New England. Beforehand he had only 1 playoff win. Then when Brady left the Patriots they were once again terrible when Belichick was forced to work with another quarterback. One example of a great coach was Joe Gibbs of the Redskins who won 3 Super Bowls with 3 different quarterbacks.

What did he expect this wasn't a season it was an experiment that was going to fail from the start.

I thought Jerod Mayo had a contract with the Patriots where he stays on the staff in exchange he is successor to bill belichick. This is why he is the head coach because of contractual obligations. But it doesn't mean they can't fire him after this season since they fulfilled their obligation but it simply didn't work.
