Stripping Paint with a Clothes Iron
If you have struggled trying to remove multiple layers of old paint by sanding, scraping, chemical paint strippers, and heat guns, a simple, cheap clothes iron may be what you need. I tried two old irons that just didn't get hot enough before I "borrowed" my wife's 1200 watt Sunbeam. I measured the temperature with my infrared thermometer and got 400 degrees Fahrenheit, which should soften any paint, and it did. A wide putty knife and an iron and you'll be stripping paint easier and cleaner than you ever did before.

The Sunshine Girl Dinghy Saga
Просмотров 233 года назад
My idea was to make a dinghy with a motor well so that I could leave the outboard on the dinghy when I rolled the dinghy up on the swim platform of my 42' trawler "Sunshine Girl." I couldn't find a 10' dinghy that would fit on the swim platform, so I bought an old 12' fiberglass skiff and cut two feet out of the center. Then I made a motor well. Then I tried it out. I wasn't happy with the perf...
Black Iron Fuel Tank Repair on a 1969Trawler
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.4 года назад
Trawler yachts built in the 1960s and 70s mostly have black iron, or plain steel (non-galvanized) fuel tanks. Steel fuel tanks tend to rust, either from the inside from water sitting in the bottom of the tank or from the outside, from water trapped in the wood on which many tanks are mounted. The top of these tanks also rust, often from leaks around the fill pipe that go unnoticed. This video s...
Tracking Down an Air Leak in the Fuel System of a Marine Diesel Engine
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.4 года назад
Marine diesel engines suck fuel from the fuel tank and through the fuel filters and hoses. If any of these components have even a tiny leak, the engine sucks air that prevents the engine from running properly. It is difficult to determine whether an air leak is the cause of a poor running engine and really hard to track down the source of an air leak. This video describes the diagnostic tool th...

South Gulf Cove Lock with Narration
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.4 года назад
The South Gulf Cove Lock connects Charlotte Harbor in Florida to the canals that make up South Gulf Cove. Two major boat storage facilities are located within the South Gulf Cove system and require boaters to pass through the lock on their way to and from the storage facilities. This video gives viewers a sense of what it is like to take a 42-foot trawler through the South Gulf Cove Lock.
Borg Warner Velvet Drive Seal Replacement

Captures the process of removing a leaking transmission seal and replacing it.
The video I watched before on this I thought it showed the product you used right before you fiberglass it after you cleaned it all up what was that? I’m ready to go on it but I’m just I don’t wanna do it wrong at this point any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I am finally getting around to repairing my fuel tank. I have a CHB 34aft cabin I scraped out the center section of the tank right below. It has rusted all the way through for about an inch. Can I use JB Weld or should I weld that before glass inside any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
Is the nut really reverse threaded?
Put an O ring on the shaft and then the flange
Absolutely love the spline cleaner. Thanks from another Borg Warner operator!
I've been having a terrible time with Racor 500 filters on the suction side of my lift pump. I bought two glass inline filters like you have, but I never thought of putting them in place off a tee. That's a great idea. I hope it will help me solve my problems.
I wanted to see the process of detaching and then attaching again the shaft from the trani, it does not compute for me :-(
Was this done in the water
Thank You.. for the instructional video and excellent service narrative !!
Thanks for Producing this video.
Great tutorial Captain ! You’re old school resourceful. Love it
It must be hard to do a proper job though that small hole. Why wasn't you cutting a square hole?
Loved this video. Thank you.. Just got done finding/fixing an air leak in the fuel system, on our Alura 30 (I hope, too rough to for test run). I share your frustration. Spent 7 years trying to track down an intermittent stalling issue on my old 27" 1965 Pearson pilot house sportfishing type boat. Best boat ever. After numerous attempts myself, I enlisted the help of a couple mechanics who thought it was fuel issue with no success. Turns out it was the 49 year old wiring harness. It was laced throughout the floor of the pilot house bilge,. It had tarnished internally so bad it could not provide enough voltage.to the ignition system. I replaced the harness and the boat ran better than it ever did. Our family loved and enjoyed that boat for 25 years. Miss her dearly. Almost bought her back twice. Brought us home safely several times in Gale/Storm force conditions from the Channel Islands off the coast of Ventura/ Santa Barbara. My surfing buddies and I would go out in somewhat extreme conditions chasing large swells. Often times 15 - 20+ feet. Actually had close to 30" seas at the harbor entrance on one trip. Best surf trip ever!!! That old Pearson brought us home safe and sound!
My boat is 26ft beam. Will it fit?
Good man, so i figure that i can work on my tranny in the boat. Problem shifting into forward...
Nice work. I would think the inside is pitted and access plate wont seal. Maybe fiberglass inside plate or weld it.
Great how to video. I have a leaky seal and will be tearing into it next week. Very helpful insight and ideas for tools and technique. Thanks, I love RUclips!
Nicely done. This is my trans but I need model number or part number for the seal, can you help me?
What's the number for the small fuel glass
Reference the oil seal ?
Would have been good to see the old seal removal, and the new one inserted, otherwise very informative
Thank you! been a while since I have done this - since like 1996/97. Good refresher.
What great team work! I'm going thru this weekend thanks for the great example.
Fantastic video. I’ve been looking for this for quite some time.
Question if you Ehret out good do you have to worry about any Sparks When you’re cutting the access point
Thank you very much for that video I appreciate it I have to do something with my I did not know that fiberglass was all right with diesel one question though please how far up did you go with the fiberglass any help would be greatly appreciated after watching your video though you relieved lotta questions thank you very much Robert
Robert, the only parts of my tank that concerned me were the bottom and the seams where the bottom meets the sides. So I didn't try to come up the sides at all, just glassed the bottom with enough resin to fill any crevices in the seams. I don't think my tank was actually leaking. I saw some fuel oil behind the stringer next to the tank and thought the tank was leaking, but when I drained the tank and filled it with water, there were no leaks. Now I think I may have overfilled the tank and the leak was from the hose connection on the fill pipe. But the outside of the bottom of my tank was quite rusted, so I figured I would be safe and glass it. I had fiberglass diesel fuel tanks in my lobster boat. Keep in mind that epoxy adheres better than polyester resin. I never use polyester resin any more. Good luck with your project.
Thank you very much I feel a little more comfortable tackling this project I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it Robert
I remember in the video it’s not there in the video now that you treated the inside of the tank with something after you cleaned it out we really need to know what that is. I’m ready to go. I got the hose cut. I cleaned it all out and I just don’t want to do it wrong from here going out. I was wondering what that was you you prepped it with for your glasses
Thanks for [posting! A very clever way of fixing the tank. I look forward to seeing the Fall update on how it held up.
Nice video! Would you happen to know where I can get a seal? 3.5 OD 2.5 ID I've been searching everywhere. The seal in the seal kit I ordered is just too small.
Transatlantic Diesel in Hayes, VA has the seals. They sent me the wrong one first, then the right one.
Are the threads on the flange nut left-handed? Seems like you tightening the wrong way. Thanks
We’re the threads standard or reverse. Left or right
Very good video.
My only concern is that the tank appeared to have a rough surface and I'm wondering whether the fiberglass resin and cloth are really permanently adhered to the tank. Good luck.
Rich, great video! thanks for sharing. Were the bolts and nuts all stainless 316?
Thank you so much for this! 2 questions if I may.Did you do this while in the water? Were you noticing oil (atf) in the bilge? Thanks in advance. Also guessing your in NE like me😏
What's the trick to separate the coupling and push the shaft to the aft? I'm doing this in the water. Loosened shaft packing, but having issue seperating the coupling to get to your first picture in your video... the actual separation. Appreciate any advice... thank you!
Thank you! Got har started moving. Used a couple of putty knives to get things going. Only about 1/4" apart right now. Will continue to turn and wedge/pry.
Thanks for making this video, great job! We will be tackling this job later this week.
How did the silicone get in there?
Thank you for the expert video, doing this job this weekend. Rick Ledden
Thanks for uploading this. I have to do the exact same thing to my velvet drive and was so glad to have found your tutorial. All the best to you.
