Windshield removal using Fishing Line
Просмотров 232 тыс.8 лет назад
Cheap, quick method of removing a windshield. The glass shop wanted $180.00 to remove and reinstall the windshield and they could not guarantee that they would not break it upon removal. A RUclips search netted the usual cold knife / utility knife removals with lots of broken windshields and struggles with pulling the knife through the urethane, and of course a plethora of wire based cutting to...
you can use a cordless drill and wind the wire around the spindle. if you can anchor the drill close the plane of the window, it will just pull the wire through the glue. The real machine uses suction cups to mount to inside glass and kevlar cord that can pull through sheet metal tabs! you method is almost free and does the same, great thinking on the 1/4 ratchet. Wonder if a low heat gun on the lower portion would soften glue?
The method can work but is fairly high risk. Those who have a junker to practice on, should.
Thank you so much!!!!! That stupid tool is 750 bucks!!!im excited to try this im going to try the spider wire
I need to take out my windshield to get at some rust most likely behind the glass where the roof and windshield meet.... the windshiled is in good shape so my concern is it breaking and turning a $200 or so fix job into a $700 one lol
That was smart.
With an orange bat this takes me less than 3 minutes, without removing any of the interior panels
someone like this guy makes america great again with intelligent and practical problem solving skills and ability to find ways to do more with less. thank you for inspiring me to try this method since I dont have much money to spend on a new windshield for a car I'm selling. Ive been able to remove a windshield with fishing line but I had a friend help me pull the line from the outside. anchoring the line inside allowed him to do it himself.
Can this be done without breaking the rear windshield? The rear windshield is not available for my project car, but I’d like to remove it for paint and to reseal it. Also the quarter windows. I’m just nervous because a replacement would not be easy to come by….
What a Clever feller! Haha Thank you!
Awesome, tysharing
This looks like the easiest method and least likely to break the windshield. Those pull knives won't reach far enough on some cars and the cable saw is slow and risky. Thanks for sharing this Will. Five years later and it's still helping people out.
Can you pull from the outside,or does it only work from the inside, will be removing a windshield tomorrow.
Nice
First off nice ingenuity now you could have made a pulley system to utilize the the fishing line and made it alot easier but here is the portion where things get complicated the proper installation of that window cause if it's not bonded correctly you get leaks and not to mention the possibility of it just sliding across the pavement when your hit the breaks
Easier way is to push it out wearing work boots
I reckon a violin "E" string would work better than piano wire or guitar strings;its the kinda wire used in cheese cutters and violin strings too
As a winscreen tech I find this very novel. We have a "mono tool" for this but I guess if you don't wanna spend the money fair play
I love saving money. But somethings? I would rather have a Pro do. And people that replace windshields seem to know their craft. But Man, do I have soem respect for you doing it yourself! Great job and great video, and Kudos to the Camreaman! SUPER GOOD JOB!
would electrical wire work too?
I was thinking the braided brass picture hanging wire
Like for the un damage glass removal
Very nice job. I started thinking about using strong braided fishing line, searched on YT and came across your video. I have some experience cutting out glass professionally, many years ago. We used the sawz-all style tool, which was fast, but caused more damage than I like. I have a suggestion for your method that should make it much easier. Get a long-handled utility knife. I think mine is 16 inches. Cut the top and down the pillars using your method. Once those are cut out, gently push out on the windshield and cut along the bottom with the utility knife. Don't cut through all in one pass. With each cut, you'll feel the windshield coming away. After 3 or 4 cuts, you'll be all the way through. Just be careful not to push hard enough to break the glass. I can cut through the bottom this way in under a minute (usually about 30 seconds). Just a tip for others looking to yeet a windshield lol
Mate just go to a windscreen tools outlet and buy the proper line it's like 10 bucks
D string on a guitar should work wonders
This is by far the worst way ever. All you need is 1m piano wire and 2 wrenches. Wind the wire around the ends of the wrenches. Ask a friend to help sawing through the polyurathene. It takes 45 seconds for us pro's to remove it that way. 2 minutes at the most if it's a bus or truck
What size is the piano wire?
@@a.kurniawan3004 its not actually piano wire. It's purposely built autoglass wire. That s just a nicknames
@@Itu2646 Oh ok. Thanks
Great video I appreciate you making it this is going to help me out tremendously I have a few windshields to change and can't find anybody to come do it for a reasonable price so I think I'm going to try ice fishing braided line
I was thinking about using braid as well. Did it work and what test did you use?
Do you think it matters if it is cold or not outside ? I’m going to try this method on Saturday and it’s cold outside.. didn’t know if that would effect anything ??? Let me know!
Thanks
very blurry, unclear vid, what are u doing..?? talking from inside the car yeah....useless
I use a guitar string which i secure to 2 seat belt ends that have the hole to lock in place,i secure 1 end of the guitar string to 1 seat belt clip ,then poke a hole to push the guitar string through & tie that end off to the 2nd seat belt clip,i then have a friend help me and we saw through the old sealant,it helps saw much faster if when you cut out the seat belt ends from a junk yard car if you leave about 2 foot of seat belt strap connected to each clip so you have enough material to wrap around your hands, using a guitar string with seat belt grips you & a friend can cleanly saw out the entire windshield in less than 15 minutes & the entire window pops right out .
And not one mention of the model airplanes. Guess only us modelers would notice them.
Excellent wisdom I plan to put to use today. However(always a "however", eh) people like me are waaaayy to clumsy to be allowed anywhere near glass with metal. I guarantee I would shatter that job. Wood for me!
Go to Harbor Freight and buy a pair of tee handles in the body and repair isle works much better holds the wire or string pull the handles
this tool spend so much time doing this no good bad and suck tool
His idea was inexpensive and did not break the glass or scratch the car. There are a lot of possible options to do this and it seems none are perfect.
Guitar wire works too
Very much like the way you thinking, rational, reasonning, like a science guy, thumbs up!
😲
I just took out a windscreen today using mig welding wire, I used .9 it worked perfectly,
I’ve perform the same as you in a Dodge Durango 2013, unfortunately it suffered a windshield replacement (because broken) with a original part (mopar windshield) but misinstalled, so it entered rust in the superior side of windshield, and the paint begone to rise. this was the reason why I haved to remove the windshield, the other job is a easy restoration for a car paint man. the big new is that although I am a beginner in this, but following your instructions, with help of mi dad, we have done a excelent job, Windshield removed no damage!!!!!
Thanks for your video, l am in the process to removed a windshield from my infiniti qx4. Great 💡.
I’ve used piano wire! 😇
Me too but there are better things like braided picture hanging wire
I know everyone is saying use a hood latch cable or wire from Harbor Freight... but I assume this method causes no harm to the paint, thus no need to re-prime to prevent rust.
Nylon trimmer line from your weed whacker works too.
Most likely when you hit the top corners . the reason it gets hard is there are plastic pins that sit in the hole in the top corners to set the glass when it installed by the factory you can see the hole in your last corner when it got harder to pull.
I am now back after almost 1 year! Last year I followed your technique on a car at the scrap yard, but I failed on the corners. Even with fishing line there was too much stress and the screen cracked. I also found my 90lb line broke on numerous occasions - this led me feeling quite despondent, especially as there were no other cars I could practice on. I had to wait for almost a year for another car to appear at a local scrap yard . But today I had success with a modified technique! This is the approached that worked for me: 1) I purchased some 300lbs braided line, and it never snapped once 2) I sprayed everything inside and outside with washing liquid for lubrication 3) I used a very thin knife to make a hole at all of the corners 4) I then used some Hazet cutting wire and Bahco BBS101 wire grip handles to saw a few inches round all the corners 5) Once the corners were cut, I tied the fishing line to the top of the steering wheel and cut all of the straights. I actually cut from the outside of the car, as I found it too cramped inside. I found I could pull the 300lbs line as hard as I wanted and it just sliced through. Actually these straights were really quick to cut, and because they were just straights, I found I didn't need the extra mechanical advantage of cutting from the inside. I hope my experience is of help to others
Vegan Dog I wish you were around my area, failed on 2 windshields already.
I'm going to try it tomorrow, ,but first I need to find out what is 300lbs 😂but I think to buy the strongest fishing cord... Thanks for the corrections and I think the most important part is a lubricant !apologies for my English. .
@@v.ivanov8001 Yes my modified approach works well. If you search for 300lbs line on Amazon, you will find a lot of options. But make sure you saw all of the corners with the wire fist and lubricate everything well. You can then cut the straights easily with the fishing line. I have now removed 4 windscreen with this approach and may get round to making a video on it sometime.
Another approach I have since used (which is a little quicker) is to use something like a Milwaukee C12MT multi tool. You can even get the dedicated windscreen cutting blades for these. The blades by Equaliser or Fein fit, you just need a chunky washer to hold them on. Alternatively you could weld a stanley blade onto a sawzall attachment like this: i.ibb.co/cQFf8pZ/tack-weld-standley-onto-sawzall-attachment.jpg But really the simple approach with the wire and fishing line is all you need
@@VeganDog Thanks! Tomorrow I will try and I hope and I think that everything will be OK.
Can I heat the glue to make it soft
Thank You ! Im Using This Method In January 2019 For The First Time. Maybe I Could Make A Video & Get You To Watch.
How'd it go
Super job bro. Removed windshield from a BMW X5 with your method in a breeze. Thank you for your help.
Very well done, for us cheap-os out there.
I wonder if a heat gun would help soften the adhesive making it easier to cut
A heat gun brings a high risk of thermalfracture ,the preferred method is to have the car in direct sunlight upon the windshield on a warm day for an hour or so. If that method isn't doable then next best is to have it inside a warm garrage for a couple hours.
10:10 looks at knuckles #sadface
15:52 is painful to watch
Appreciate that I'm going to have to try that on my 98 Dodge Dakota rear glass
How did you do on the rear glass. Those can be a nightmare.
