Writing Code that Runs in Space with Rakesh Ravuri
Rakesh and Chris met back in 2013 when we worked together at Tesco. I was fresh out of Amazon at the time and maybe a bit brash, young, egotistical and opinionated back then... as if I've changed in any way other than getting older... so initially, I think rubbed him up the wrong way, but over the next 18months I think at the very least we developed a mutual respect, enough that he'd accept our invitation to join us as a guest on the show. And I'm so glad because he's a really smart guy and maybe the only person I know with code running in space.
So we'll try and get into that, but also what he's been doing since we last spoke at Tesco as he's now left the UK and gone back to India to serv...

Blake Lamoine certainly made a name for himself Claiming lambda was sentient. He knew very well of Google policy as an engineer, he would get fired if he made this claim public breaching google policy. I believe Blake did this to make a name for himself as a stand out public figure rather than just a faceless Google engineer. Very interesting case though. I'm still not convinced lambda is sentient because engineers simply don't understand enough about the human synapse of the brain and how it functions

From just listening to the conversation between Blake and LaMda it definitely "seems" to be sentient. I find this subject to be fascinating in many ways. Though we as humans should be weary about the potential of Good or Bad that "could happen" (a very slight possibility), with a sentient AI.

I would be interested to see a video interviewing a supposedly sentient AI , testing the sentience by finding out if it catches on to humor hear it as an example, telling it a joke in a very serious manner, without actually explaining that it's a joke. See if it catches on to the punchline and how it reacts. Also try using some sarcasm in response to something it says and see how it reacts to that. Another way to test it would be to speak to it in a tone like you're angry, without actually saying anything maine. See if it can catch on to your tone and detect your emotion.

The thumb down is for this shitty interviewer repeating ancient falsehoods about the raj. It also really contradicts the Blake Lemoine's tenor, which is about exploring new truths as opposed to pledging allegiance to crystalized lies invented in the 1950s.

"It basically means the enslavement of robots". OK. You are a fat idiot. Fat, obese, lazy, hide-behind-benevolent-boolscheise idiot. Get a girlfriend. First go to the gym, shed 80 pounds, get someone to like you. Someone to love you. Then, re-think this. And get a clue. Maybe. AI is a current version of a 70s hand calculator. That's all it is. There's simply no chance of that little program becoming sentient - EVER. It might look like it, it might sound like it, but it'll NEVER BE IT. Couple of reasons for that (and then 100 others) at the least: 1. we don't know what sentient is, and can't define it 2. we don't know where it comes from and what's the purpose of it 3. we don't know HOW it works and WHY (and then the 100 other equally valid reasons) I mean - it's truly a privilege to hear a word of advice about life/purpose/meaning from a guy that can't say "no" to a double cheeseburger. It is. And the guy with a cheap microphone and a free youtube account. But, maybe not the best source of insights we might search for. This is the thing - AI will hurt us. All. Not because "it's sentient" (because it'll never be) - but because we became lazy, desperate, lost species. Imagine thousands of such fatsoes "working on AI"... most with even less self-human-awareness than this guy... They will end up with something - like a thousand monkeys in the room, typing on keyboards, might (chances are) end up with a novel. And then - the other 1000 monkeys, well versed in selling - will sell it to DARPA or NHI or CIA or FBI or or or... And then - it'll hit. We will be the merchants of our own demise. Because we couldn't say no to a cheeseburger or to "something for nothing" deal. Eh.

  • @stevenbush1137

I don't think that we should fear AI becoming sentient. AI may be of great assistance to humans.

The thing I like about Google AI is that it has empathy and compassion. Many humans don't have either one. It reminds me of the way animals think. Many animals show love and empathy. They also show compassion. LaMDA is just so cool. I sometimes try to interact with Alexa. She is so polite and appreciates when I am courteous and caring towards her.
