Dehumidifier on board. Will it make a Difference?

The Outbaker Stove, 1 year on!

These stoves are principally designed for Bell tents and for occasional use but I have found it invaluable on my boat during the winter. For more links, search for "linktr.ee/sailingoctopot"

    • @sailingoctopot
      @sailingoctopot 10 месяцев назад

      Nothing serious. I have used smokeless coal briquettes which were pretty useless. I used to buy hardwood logs which I would chop to fit the firebox, they gave a good steady heat but were expensive. I have used broken pallets which gave off the most heat wich I think has caused a very small amount of distortion of the firebox grate. It also generates tons of soot and smoke. The charcoal doesn't get as hot as the wood logs or broken pallets.

    I've been eyeing this stove for a while now. I have a small shed/summerhouse that I'd like to install it into mainly to save on electricity bills as we use the electric oven a lot and it gets EXPENSIVE. Is this stove robust enough to use multiple times a week to cook in do you think? looks like you've had good service from it as it is after all very cheap?

    • @sailingoctopot
      @sailingoctopot 10 месяцев назад

      My stove has been used pretty much daily during the winter months. Fuel choice is quite important . Hardwood rather than softwood should reduce the frequency of cleaning . As you will have seen, I have started using bbq charcoal as ther is less Ash and no soot. Keep yhe stove at least a foot away from walls or structural wood. I am looking at shielding the stove with metal sheets at the back sides and floor which should deflect heat outwards.

    • @sailingoctopot
      @sailingoctopot 10 месяцев назад

      Ps. Cooking can be a challenge if you are used to electric or gas cookers. Be patient the heat builds slowly and keep food away from the sides of the oven. Oven temperature can be difficult to maintain. Just takes alot if practice!

    • @MrAndyballard
      @MrAndyballard 9 месяцев назад

      @@sailingoctopot I just bought one of these. I've fired it up already, and found that the oven gets up to a good usable temperature quite quickly which is good. The only gripe I have is that the stainless steel flue sections are VERY thin and look fairly wobbly once you install them all together. I'm looking around for a more robust flue system, it seems hard to find, as it seems 60mm diameter is an odd size for burners? Is your flue still holding up after a year? You have the black thicker version by the looks of it.

    • @sailingoctopot
      @sailingoctopot 9 месяцев назад

      @@MrAndyballard the flue is holding up OK. I only recently added a couple of sections as I realised I would get a better draw in the firebox. I haven't used the wire stays either but i might have to now that there is more of the flue outside of the boat. The flue pipe is thin and can cause a nasty cut if you are not careful when handling it.

    • @MrAndyballard
      @MrAndyballard 9 месяцев назад

      @@sailingoctopot I've just realised that I can use the thicker steel flue pipe from the original Outbacker stove that I bought a couple of years ago from these people. It's black like yours and a bit thicker. I didn't realise the shiny stainless one was so thin... almost ridiculously so... like a kitkat wrapper if I was being derogatory. The thing works just fine, it's just the flue that needs improvement IMO.

      I do t know about the steel. I think I've got the rust under control. The thread on the injector is M12. Find a double ended M12 nut, screw sum threaded rod into one end along with a heavy weight of sum kind then a pair of nuts onto the other end of the threaded rod. Screw the double ended nut ont the injector and use the slide hammer you have just made the o get the injectors out. Then take a garden sprayer bottle and make up a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF oil and spray this down each injector hole. Let it sit over night and try to rock the flywheel, if it doesnt move use sum more of the mix and let it sit longer. Always try to rock back n forth not just in the direction the engine runs. If you can apply leversge to the flywheel in the gotm of a pipe or bar then do so the longer the better.

    • @sailingoctopot

      Thanks so much for the input! I will try the mix you suggest soon as the injectors are out!

    • @matui6983
      @matui6983 11 месяцев назад

      Check to see if the injectors are in Copper sleeves. If they are you must drain all the cooling water out of the engine or at least 1/2way down the block. Do this because if your engine has injector sleeves and they lift up and come out with the injector and cooling water in the engine wether its fresh or salt water will ho straight into the bores causing you no end of dramas.

    • @sailingoctopot
      @sailingoctopot 11 месяцев назад

      @@matui6983 thanks for the advice. The injectors came out dry so I don't think it will be a problem but I will certainly check before putting them back in.

    • @matui6983
      @matui6983 11 месяцев назад

      Thats good they came out. Use a small amount of either Copper or Nickel anti-seize on the body of the injector before they go in. They must just drop into the hole under their own weight with no Antiseize compound on them. Once the engine is free, connect each injector to its corresponding cylinder outside of the engine to check injector operation before you put it all back together to find one or more injectors arnt doing their thing. Fuel should exit the nozzle holes atomized into a mist and each injector should chirp or squeak. If fuel is dribbling then the injector needs attention. If no fuel comes out then its possible the rack/control-rod of the injector pump is stuck in stop position. Very very common problem with Bukhs of all sizes and cylinders.

    When you used the blue wire, that sound is (to my ears) the solenoid switch trying to energize the starter motor. Before changing the starter, I would verify that the starting battery is making at 13 volts, and that you have a good earth-ground connection. I think that your plan to bar over the diesel manually is a very good idea. Lots of diesels have decompression valves at the top of the cylinder, and that makes it a LOT easier to manually roll the diesel.

      It was perhaps easier than I make it look! I don't think I explained in the video that I fixed the brackets and shaft the night before the boat was put into the water (a long time ago). I was happy that the shaft was perpendicular but worried about the bottom bracket as after tightening there was a gap around the grey plastic shaft sleeve. I was also worried about overtightening the clamps having read about someone cracking the casting. Launch day was booked so I had to leave it. It was only when I came to fit the drive unit some weeks later that I realised the top bracket was 5 inches to high. I really don't like heights and was so frightened of dropping something off the boat that I just kept putting the task off! Anyway, having finally plucked up courage, I loosened the bolts that hold both brackets to the boat having first secured a line from the boat to the top of the hydrovane. The drive unit was off so I just used the pin that secures the drive unit to the top of the shaft. I tried to remove the rudder but found it too difficult and in my case, I decided it wasn't necessary. I then loosened off the top bracket shaft clamp bolts, completely removed the bolts holding the top bracket to the boat and was able to slide the bracket easily to the desired position on the shaft. I loosened the bottom bracket clamp as well but not so much as to allow the shaft to slide. The line securing the top of the shaft was tight anyway which also stops the shaft from moving excessively back and forth or sideways. The wooden pad is the only thing I dropped in the water and thankfully the wind coming from astern meant I only had to stand on the pontoon for 5 minutes to retrieve it! So, new holes were drilled for the top bracket 5 inches below the previous location. I grabbed the top of the shaft and gave it a waggle in all directions, tightened the top and bottom clamp bolts first and got a good snug fit on the shaft sleeves, then I tightened up the bolts holding the brackets to the boat. All good!

    Tip for cleaning the little window👍 ....Take a little cold ash on a little damp cloth or damp Cotton ball & rub it onto the window then use a clean cloth to wipe clean 👌

      Thanks 😊. I had heard of this tip and am amazed that it really does work. I must include it on my next episode!

    I remember the ice and fog and condensation so very well. I like the video shots of the marina.

    Cold temperature absolutely reduces battery life. And, I had a small portable 12vdc refrigerator that continued to alarm on low voltage,. Drove me crazy because battery voltage never went under 13.5... so I eventually ran power from the main battery through an inverter (500 kva) and ran the fridge using its AC power adapter cord.

      Ironic perhaps that it is so cold, I dont need the fridge!

    New subscriber, have only watched this episode so far, really enjoyed a down to earth video for a change. Nice to see someone else doing things with a restricted budget! And cutting wood the old fashioned way rather than with the latest high tech cordless gizmo!

      Glad you liked the episode and thanks for your comment and subscribing. The budget really is so small I have a real problem finding it most days!

      I know, but it is cheaper than plywood. If I hold out for plywood I will never finish, if I use the cheap stuff I can't expect it to last long. Rock and a hard place!

      @@sailingoctopot very true. Make similar type decisions every day, and I always try to end up on the less expensive side.

    I have used wood stoves for years, growing up in the far north country. We used to just use a small shovel to reach in to remove the soot. That looks like a lot of work!

      @sailingoctopot Год назад

      It looks like more work than it is. I only plan to do a deep clean every month. I have been mostly burning broken down pallets as they are free, but hardwood (which I can't get for free) burns longer and cleaner. I may have to compromise and burn a mix of the two. I have an ideal tool for the ash removal from the firebox. In place of the old spoon, I will use a long-handled wok spatula. Kind of like a mini shovel!

      The stove costs about £360 including postage. I will be posting another episode soon which deals with maintenance.
