BANAAG AT LAKAS Banaag at Lakas is a march composed by Nicanor Abelardo in 1909. It was dedicated to the Confederation Bulakena in their Valada Literario- Musical, an event organized by the Confederation to raise funds for community improvements. J. Ortiguera stated that the march was composed for a local constabulary band during Abelardo's stay in Sibul Springs. Interestingly, a hotel restaurant in Sibul Springs owned by V. Abelardo was also named Banaag at Lakas. Although reportedly composed for a local constabulary band, no sheet music remains aside from a photographic reproduction of the original piano manuscript dated January 2, 1909, featured in Renacimiento Filipino on May 14, 1911, page 14. Don Junie R. Sta Maria arranged this particular rendition for the Biak-na-Bato Band.

MUTYA NG PASIG-Inspiration for "Mutya ng Pasig" blossomed during a 1926 Pasig River carnival, where Nicanor Abelardo was profoundly moved. This prompted him to craft a musical narrative evoking a mythical past of opulence. In this Kumintang, the Mutya emerges as a storyteller lamenting her lost kingdom and love under the radiant full moon. The song's lyrical depth invites varied interpretations, from reflections on colonial history to connections with nature, granting listeners room for personal narratives. "Mutya ng Pasig" beckons us into a captivating realm where music and imagination seamlessly intertwine.

LOLA BASYANG MARCH-Step back in time and embark on a musical journey with "Lola Basyang," a composition attributed to the celebrated Filipino composer Nicanor Abelardo. Although the precise date of its creation remains a mystery, this enchanting piece gained renewed life through a historic 1958 recording by the Buenaventura Band. What was once considered a lost treasure has been meticulously transcribed and arranged by PauloJohn M. Rubio and Eugene Michael Cortez. As you listen to "Lola Basyang," you'll discern subtle echoes of Abelardo's earlier work,"Perlas ng Silangan." The piece commences with a triumphant trumpet fanfare, reminiscent of Abelardo's use of the same motif to open his Trioin "Perlas ng Silangan." Abelardo's compositional brilliance shines as he skillfully interweaves elements from "Marcha Nacional Filipinas" and"The Star-Spangled Banner" to serve as a countermelody, enhancing the musical depth of this masterpiece.

MOUNTAIN SUITE The material from this Suite was reworked from Abelardo’s earlier compositions in the Tagalog operetta Akibat (1913), the original score of which was entitled Mountain Scenes. The dramatists call this a historical play, the events portrayed taking place in 1565. Motifs of music are of the folk. Abelardo reworded the title when presented as one of his graduation pieces in 1921. Tragically, the original score and parts were lost during the Liberation of Manila in 1945. However, Lt.Col. Antonino Buenaventura reconstructed and re-scored it for Full Orchestra in 1983, reviving it from the ashes of war. Another transcription of the Suite was discovered within the archives of the Biak-na-Bato Band in San Miguel, Bulacan. This rendition, transcribed by Ruperto E. Libunao for the band, suffered damages to the original manuscripts due to storage conditions. However, the manuscripts were transcribed by Paulo John M. Rubio, who also contributed additional parts to suit the instrumentation of a modern community band.

The Paddyfield Pipit, or Oriental Pipit, (Anthus rufulus) is a small passerine bird in the pipits and wagtail family. It is a resident breeder in open scrub, grassland and cultivation in southern Asia east to the Philippines. Conducted by Kevin Albaugh from Plymouth Community Band in Michigan.

HALF MOON BAY-Half Moon Bay March, composed by Ruperto E. Libunao, pays homage to his dear friend Robert Smith, a respected music educator, conductor, and community musician from Half Moon Bay, California. Inspired by the camaraderie shared between them, Libunao crafted this march as a heartfelt tribute. Through this nostalgic motif, Libunao weaves a tapestry of musical tradition, infusing the composition with a sense of timeless familiarity and regional charm.

Bugler’s Holiday was composed by Leroy Anderson. Anderson (1908-1975) was a preeminent American composer of light concert music, and this bright and cheerful piece featuring the band’s entire trumpet section is one of his best-known favorites1. Originally scored for trumpet trio and orchestra, it has been performed by groups of nearly every instrument imaginable, often to great comic effect.

"Ave Maria" composed by Francisco Buencamino Sr. in 1923, is a cherished gem in the realm of sacred music. This timeless composition, set in the key of G minor, offers a deeply spiritual and contemplative experience. A single hymn, it draws its inspiration from the Catholic liturgy and is sung in the sacred language of Latin. In this brief yet poignant piece, we find solace, spirituality, and a timeless connection to the rich tradition of sacred music.

KUNG HINDI MAN- Kung Hindi Man was Transcribed from an original love song featuring voice, violin, cello, and piano, with Tagalog lyrics penned by Abelardo and an English rendition by Atilano F. Montesa. Published on December 23, 1929, in the Phil. Patent Office, it's believed this piece was composed around 1920. This specific arrangement was unearthed in the archives of the Biak-na-Bato Band in San Miguel, Bulacan. Though the arranger remains unidentified, it was meticulously transcribed by Eugene Michael Cortez and edited by Paulo John M.Rubio from the original manuscript, preserving its historical and musical significance.

SA YAPAK NI RIZALSa Yapak ni Rizal, a nationalistic band composition by Ruperto E.Libunao, unfolds in three distinct movements: introduction,kundiman, and chorus. Composed during the American period, a pivotal era in shaping the Filipino national identity through art, the piece seamlessly weaves historical context with musical expression.The composition commences with a subtle introduction, subtly foreshadowing the main theme, before transitioning into a dynamic presentation characterized by alternating trumpet solos and andensemble passages. As the music progresses into the Kundiman section, the melody blossoms, distributed among various instruments. Finally, the Chorus section begins with a triumphant brass fanfare, punctuated by fragments of the national anthem,"Lupang Hinirang," serving as a powerful homage to the enduring legacy of our nation and the spirit of our forebears. "Sa Yapak ni Rizal" stands as a stirring testament to Filipino patriotism and the enduring influence of Dr. Jose Rizal.

BITUING MARIKITComposed by Nicanor Abelardo for the Tagalog sarswela "DakilangPunglo" in 1926, "Bituing Marikit" is a timeless gem of Filipino music.Sung by the renowned singer Conching Rosal, the song's lyrics, penned byServando de los Angeles, poetically compare the beloved to an"unreachable star shining in the night of life." This romantic Danzacaptures the essence of a passionate lover, yearning for a "ray of light" ora taste of the "pure stream of love." In 1937, "Bituing Marikit" wasimmortalized in the movie of the same name by Carlos Tolosa, starringElsa Oria, and released by Sampaguita Pictures. Today, this classic pieceremains a testament to Abelardo's enduring legacy in Philippine music,preserving the timeless themes of love and courtship in a bygone era.
