Restoring a little Billhook Beauty
Rehandling a vintage Elwell Billhook for use in the wood.
With the right handle these billhooks feel good to use, nicely balanced in the hand. The caulked handles contribute to this 'feel'. (Caulked from the Latin Calx heel? - Any linguists out there?)
A couple of videos on billhook handles worth a look are:
ruclips.net/video/rhcUJi1QVSQ/видео.html
by Selectronify - you may want to skip through some parts.
ruclips.net/video/4OrtDIx1aq8/видео.html
by Falcon390 Workshop - a good one for burning in a handle.
Plus a book on sharpening to read. Sharp by Sean Hellman.
Very instructive, although billhooks are not his speciality.

    How do you adjust the shower temperature on the Bristan Sonique thermostatic valve. In the fully opened nine o'clock handle position, the water is still not as hot as I would like? Paul

    • @peterwarne1508
      @peterwarne1508 10 месяцев назад

      I don't know what temperature your hot water is but mine is at least 55C and to be honest after reassembling the unit and putting it back it worked fine. Turning the lever back to about 11 o'clock gives a suitable shower temp. I rewatched my video and at 1minute 20 seconds in you see me unscrewing the temperature control valve with a 2.5 mm allen key, screwing that in or out may help. The unit does have a thermostatic valve in it as well. You can see that in its cradle right at the beginning, if that has a fault it may be the cause. That's about the best I can do as I haven't had to solve that particular problem.

    • @peterwarne1508
      @peterwarne1508 Год назад

      By feel as I recall. I just screwed it in until it 'felt right'. It probably isn't too critical because when the hot and cold supplies are connected there is a lot of latitude on the flow/temperature control. For me the temperature of the shower water is at about right at 11o'clock. With the hot full on it is at 9 o'clock but that's too hot for me with my hot water supply.

      This was all done in a local wood where there are several Badger Setts (Dens). When you know where they are sleeping underground it is easy to set up a movement sensitive camera to capture some video when they come out at night.

  • @peterwarne1508

    In answer to Chuck Lowe. With this set up video and audio are recorded separately but at least approximately in sync. I did a lot of experimentation with this at the time. But I would agree it is a bit of a pain to add the audio to the video in a video editor. There are cameras that record audio as well, but I haven't tried any of them and their power consumption may be too high for this sort of project. Maybe something for the future.

  • @cjlowe1650

    • @peterwarne1508
      @peterwarne1508 2 года назад

      Yes you are. The instructions are in the code. As I think I said before when I developed the code originally I worked out how to record camera video first, coordinated with PIR sensor. Then I worked out how to record sound separately. Then I figured out how to control the LEDs with the PIR sensor. Then after a lot of research figured out how to get everything to happen at once with threading.

    • @peterwarne1508
      @peterwarne1508 2 года назад

      Actually adding to that, to be fair, each video will have to be matched to the audio so what you might get is say 'video1' if you set up the file name like that and there will be a separate 'audio1' file that will be recorded at the same time. The two will then need to be put together in a video editor like 'Shotcut'.

    • @peterwarne1508

      Difficult to say what's not going right but I know it took me months of research and experimentation to get it to work. I looked at what other people did and worked through CamJam Edukit 2 - sensors. Then I slowly built it up one aspect at a time. PIR sensor with LEDs, PIR sensor with camera, PIR sensor with microphone. I found to start with, it was easier working with Rasberry Pi 3 at home then found a way to make it work on the zero with battery/power pack.

    Thanks for this very helpful post Peter, I have a Bristan Mini Twinline shower and the thermostatic valve looks almost identical to yours. However I have a rather strange anomaly with mine, which servicing has not cured. The shower has a Grundfos 2 bar pump fitted to it which I have also stripped and serviced, but in spite of this I continue to get reduced pressure on the however side only. In fact the hot has about half the pressure of the cold. I don't think I have air locks and have cleaned both in line filters at the pump and the shower. I wondered if you have ever encountered similar before. Any ideas or pointers would be much appreciated. Cheers Mitch.

    • @peterwarne1508
      @peterwarne1508 2 года назад

      I have never used the LEDs that come with the camera. mainly because they use the same power supply as the raspberry pi itself. I have always preferred to control the 12v supply to the separate LED array using a switching system controlled by the pi. This way there is less current flowing through the Raspberry Pi which might cause problems. But since I have never used the 'on-camera' LEDs I can't say if there really is an issue or not.

      The type of IR LEDs I use do have a red glow, so do some commercial trail cameras. I have been observing badgers and foxes with these and with cameras with no glow LEDs and it makes no difference to the animals' behaviour. Foxes tend to be suspicious when they first see them but that can be in daylight. Badgers investigate cameras by sniffing them. So overall I think they can see them but it doesn't affect their behaviour. Mostly the animals ignore the cameras.

    Hi, thanks for the video. I've had a Sonique installed recently, I tried adjusting the temp on it but it won't get hotter than the factory preset and now it won't even go back to the way it was. Bristan have sent me a replacement thermostat and piston assembly (Part No: SK1500-3), but I don't know how to replace it. Do I just use a 30mm socket to remove the whole cartridge from the body of the mixer and the piston is loose inside, or do I have to disassemble the cartridge to get to it?

    • @peterwarne1508
      @peterwarne1508 3 года назад

      Sounds like you will need to take the cartridge out. Have a look at Bristan's own video on a slightly more complicated shower mixer here: ruclips.net/video/wq2fHRhgFqo/видео.html The Sonique is easier, you will need to pop off the grub screw cover on the front handle/cover and with a 2.5mm Allen Key undo that grub screw, then pull the handle/cover off. You will need to unscrew the cartridge assembly with a 30mm socket wrench/box spanner. Then you will be looking at the part as in my video. I recommend greasing the O rings and any threads you can see as it makes the whole thing much smoother in operation. Also play with the angle of the handle of the temperature control/front cover when you push it back on, as that can also influence how the valve works. (You don't need to fasten it with the grub screw until you are happy with it. You may find that the off position is not quite at 6 o'clock.)

    • @EE-Z
      @EE-Z 3 года назад

      @@peterwarne1508 Thanks. It was indeed a simple job, maybe 5 mins to remove the cartridge and swap out the thermostat/piston. Trickiest part was getting the spring that goes into the back of the piston to stay in position when putting the cartridge back in. I adjusted the temp screw so that the outer edge of the cup was flush with the edges of the cartridge and I seem to have got the desired temp luckily. The old thermostat (2 weeks old) was stuck in the cold position (rod fully in), stuck it in a pot of boiled water and with a little help it popped out. I get what you mean with the handle being off position. I will have to adjust that as the valve shuts off before it reaches the 6 o'clock position. Thanks again.

      @@peterwarne1508 yeah I did see that recommendation in another video, but I assumed that might be for a well used product rather a new one like mine, so I didn't bother grabbing a tool that could do it , I just thought the spring would stay in there by itself.
