Empowerment After Trauma

Trauma comes in many different forms. My specialty practice focuses on all forms of trauma, including physical and emotional abuse and neglect, sexual abuse and exploitation, spiritual and religious abuse, educational abuse and neglect, financial exploitation, environmental traumas including vehicular accidents and natural disasters as well as complex grief and loss.
IFS and EMDR are psychotherapy models that reach for deeper exploration, understanding and resolution of disturbing material. Unlike traditional ‘Talk Therapy’ EMDR and IFS seek to journey toward the root underlying causes of distress rather than simply being heard and validated with compassion. Both achieve these goals only via different paths of clinical protocol. I often use both models in the same session. Some clients prefer one specific model and many appreciate both.

I don't get about finding the spot then not looking at it? What is the point of finding the spot then?
Clients generally come back to the spot
Is the purpose of the music to imbued with calming experience? Is the purpose se to have a bilateral stimulation when processing? What is the purpose of holding the stick on the spot if the perfob has the eyes closed?
In consultation with Senior BSP Trainer Dr. Christine Ranck, BLS (bilateral stimulation - music and nature sounds delivered from right to left, back and forth, rather than in stereo), are not necessary for Brainspotting to work. However, they can enhance the experience by helping the client to relax, and to perhaps go deeper and sooner.
Senior BSP Trainer Dr. Christine Ranck shares that the pointer is so very important in Brainspotting. Even if the client's eyes move off the pointer to look in other directions, the Brainspot that the therapist is holding for the client still needs to be held with the pointer (like a rock!), so that the client can always come back to it. And every time they come back to it, they will see the therapist holding that spot for them. It is very reassuring for the client, seeing that the therapist is still engaged and reliably there for them. The pointer is "attached" to the therapist, and is therefore a powerful and reassuring symbol of the therapist's presence and trustworthiness. Unless the client firmly requests that the pointer is put down, we always keep the pointer up, holding the spot, so that no matter when the client looks at the pointer they know the therapist is there for them
Hi I notice you continuously use both the BLS methods. I have not seen that before in my very new EMDR knowledge base. Can you tell me your rationale for this do you use this method often. Thanks to you both for sharing your knowledge
The video you are referencing is older, I now use an app on my phone and often pause BLS with traditional sets. In my own personal emdr therapy bls was used continuously and worked well. I think it can be done both ways as long as the therapist is mindful of window of tolerance
Thank you🙏🏻 So how do you choose working with either the activation spot or the calm spot
Depends on how activated! If client gets activated to point of overwhelm or flooding, a resource (calm) spot is indicated
Do you have a video using an activated spot?

So glad!
thank you so much, fantastic
You're very welcome!
If he prioritized his inner child he could schedule time to go to the beach and play with the children in his family. He could plan his vacations so they met this need for himself and his family in the real world. Chances are the family all need it. Ongoing self love without guilt, for maintenance, can include and benefit the family.
I know this is an old video... but is it weird that I had to stop watching the video when they started talking about the upset, scared little part...? Because it was too close to home and personal for my little part, Enari. :( We started crying.... A whole bunch of exchanges between my parts happened after that but yeah, might have to watch this demonstration some other time...
Thank you for sharing! Glad this video touched you and your younger parts and facilitated some deep connection. 🌺
What on earth is a gender unicorn? I agree there can be masculine and feminine energies but there are only 2 genders. It sounds like you would rather encourage people to be beautiful genderless unicorns and mutilate their bodies to fit in rather than actually address issues, traumas etc and help people heal. Watching this was really uncomfortable, like no-one wants to offend or get called transphobic. Also calling women cis is unnecessary, we know who we are and genuine trans women are women, they dont call us cis, its unnecessary.
I’m crying. I think I have found the answer to my life struggles at the age of 51. I was bullied at School for being gay. I have a narcissistic Mother and my Father was an alcoholic. I trained as an Actor but then couldn’t cope with the feelings of rejection. Everyone was telling me how talented I was and asking me why I had given up on my dreams but I was so overwhelmed by just the thought of getting back into ‘The Business’ auditions, castings etc. I found comfort in alcohol from a young age but eventually it ravaged my whole being. I wanted to die. At the age of 40 I had a moment of clarity, picked the telephone for the first time in years and broke down on the phone to a rehab treatment centre. I got sober and have now been sober for almost 12 years. I’m sober yes, but still desperately unhappy. I procrastinate all the time, I’m generally unhappy and continually dream of being a working actor but I’m held back by so much fear. It’s got to the point where I feel like a total failure, worthless and depressed. I avoid social situations, I’m filled with resentment and jealousy of others and am starting to lose all hope after I went through therapy to help with childhood traumas. After seeing this video I can see how much this technique would work for me and it feels almost like the possible answer to my problems. Thank you for posting this, I’ll be looking for a local IFS trained therapist and will hopefully begin to heal myself. I’ll keep you updated. ☺️
When little one decided she was ready to let go of the 80% ❤. I've only recently discovered IFS and so far this is the most beautiful experience l've watched. Thank you both for sharing.
Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you for sharing your practice of this work. It’s very generous of your participant in her session, and you. 🙏🏻 It felt very helpful to hear this.. it has broadened my understanding. 🙌🏼
Great point what he says about Moshe
If he would have said his ears or eyebrows would have been the most calm, how would this be different in what comes after? Since you can not follow the stick with your ears or eyebrows.
The spot identified with the pointer is the one that feels the most calm in whatever part of the body that the client stated felt calm or neutral. This is called the ‘Resource’ spot. (When using ‘Activated’ spot, the body part that is most distressed is identified and the spot chosen is the one where the distress is felt the strongest).
If his Resource spot would have been his left shoulder, would you have held the wand by his left shoulder? And, would you have him look in that direction? Thanks! @empowermentaftertrauma7812
No, the therapist helps the client to find a spot to look at that correlates internally with the resource part in the body. Perhaps by asking: where do you look and it feels even more calm. Therapist learns by training and practice with other brainspotters.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
AMAZIN!
Do you do online meetings
Yes if you reside in either NY or FL
Is there ways to go about it if theres a persistent feeling of not being so clear on communication with a part, for her (thankfully) it seems to come easy and naturally.
That might be because there’s a ‘blocking’ part getting in the way so first we would address the blocking part
Such a strong kan! And thank you so much for being great at this and helping him!

I have the feeling this is Ericksonian Hypnosis.

😊 Thanks for sharing ❤🙏
Thanks for watching!
Great content but hearing it is tough
Many thanks for this, I found it very interesting, helpful & Informative. My dad was very ill, and then passed away whilst my mum was pregnant with me. My mum was understandably depressed, and went on to be diagnosed with bipolar. I have been quite withdrawn, and had regular periods of depression throughout my life (I'm 58 now), I've read 4 books on IFS, and watched many videos on IFS by Dick Schwartz and other IFS practitioners, engaging a therapist is way beyond my means right now, but I feel that I'm making some progress. I had never thought of handing the burden back to my mother before watching this video - my mum has passed away now, so I believe she has been unburdened, so I believe she could take it back. Thanks again, I'm saving this video to watch again.
@kingofdubb2133 thank you for this wonderful feedback. My joyful Parts are clapping, singing, celebrating and joining your curious and learning Parts for the fabulous IFS work you have been doing on your own! IFS is a therapy model that was designed for everyone to do, so you’re in the right place! Blessings for continued healing and unburdening, and here’s a suggestion, perhaps there’s someone like a friend, or another family member who you can do Parts work together with? Sending good wishes from my Self to YourSelf 😊
Thank you very much indeed for your generosity in being willing to share sessions on different aspects of IFS. I really enjoyed the first session with who I now know is your husband. I live in Australia and am not yet an IFS trained person. I have had one Zoom session with a level 3 therapist trained by Dick Schwartz (Level 3) and am currently reading and working through two IFS books and viewing many therapy sessions online. May I ask a question (and I realise this video is a year old now). Imagining myself as a 4 or 5 year old child (and I clearly can remember myself at this age) I do not believe I would have any sophisticated mathematical concepts such as percentages at this young age. Can you comment please if you read this. This aspect is causing me to be hesitant about trusting. I trust IFS but have an issue with the detail here. Thank you.
@Tascountrygirl - if you are referring to the legacy burden, Marlo gave her assessment of the percentage from her present day Adult Self. I hope this answers your question 😊
This is a great video to watch after I viewed the first session. Thank you. I will mention respectfully that the sound dropped in and out which was a pity to not hear clearly all your conversation.
Thanks for sharing!
Masterpiece.
Your way-of-being is healing. I esp noticed it from about 11:50-13:40. 'Oh so THAT is what it sounds like and feels like to really accept oneself...... Ohhhhhhhh nowwww I get it. ' All the space you gave, after, too, allows it to become embodied, I felt. Wow. You're amazing at this.
I am going to start IFS and this was very informative. Helps me know what to expect. Ty.
Glad it was helpful!
This dear therapist! She remains so patient with the client. He's in his head so much & all over the place. I hope eventually he can learn to stay with one part & really listen to hear their precious messages.
wait.. can i do ifs if i have aphantasia? is it fine if i cant visualise it?
You dont have to visualize things clear as day i dont think i have aphantasia but there is concern about my visualization skills sometimes, you just get the feel for it
I am grateful for having been able to see both these videos. Thank you.
Our pleasure!
Please the audio is inaudible.
Try a different device and use highest volume
Hi, I'm a audio mixer and your recording is very poor. There are too many artifacts due to the distance from the recording audio device. I'm assuming it was recorded form an iPhone or other. The distance between the device and the subject is too far for the simple microphone that is in the iPhone. Regardless your video caught my attention and I had to replay the audio portion over and over at times to make out what was being said. I'm also guessing that many viewers gave up watching the video because of the poor audio. Nevertheless it was very educational. Thank you. @@empowermentaftertrauma7812
Wow powerful example! So when mixing EMDR with IFS would you only do it it the client doesn't want to talk about the situation out loud?
No, I do this in many different types of sessions for different reasons
@@empowermentaftertrauma7812 Thank you for answering! Could you clarify how you decide when to transition into EMDR? Is it based on the intensity of the emotions?
I don't have a formula, in fact in some cases I start with EMDR and then transition into IFS when a Part emerges and seems stuck during processing
@@illusica Another way of working toward integrating IFS (or similar models of parts work) and EMDR can be A) more integrative and less either/or with switching back and forth between the models, or B) more focussed on EMDR and having the IFS serve the overall EMDR therapy. There are several models of integration available. My personal preference is the latter. Dr. Dani Kahn, Senior EMDR trainer; Director - The Omakim EMDR Training Center.
It’s obvious the therapist is still learning and shows in how she works with the patient. But they got to where he needed to go as she stayed with the process. The patient gave good feedback and asked for clarification. Now he can work on his codependency.
Always learning. Especially about a spouse of 34 years
thank you for this video! very useful!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I LOVE THIS!!! Thank you very much for sharing it! 😊🥰
So glad!
Loved watching this session, thank you both for the openness and vulnerability
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great session! I’m wondering how much background the client/actress had in the IFS model prior to this session? I get the sense that she was at least somewhat familiar with the IFS model?
I sent her two books to read prior to our session. She 'got it' right away!
@@empowermentaftertrauma7812 which books did you send her to read?

It is inspiring and instructive to see a couple who admire each other's strengths, celebrate their differences and understand how to integrate their unique approaches and visions to enhance their life and the lives of their clients.
I have been bouncing between Internal Family Systems and Bowen Family Systems. I can relate to both. I am also in ACA. What I like about IFS is that I can label a part without actually knowing what that part is. I have difficulty in ACA knowing my parts. The Bowen Family Systems shows why we get all the parts and then what approach to use in dealing with those parts. I do agree with Richard Schwartz about when we get good at this we become our own Therapist..
Hello my dear. You are so incredibly good at listening parts... and also so empathic ! AMAIZING ! I would like to ask you if you still practice and if you do online or only in you office. Thank you 🙏🏻
Hi Remi, thank you for this feedback! If you are in NY or FL I do both in person and virtual
@@empowermentaftertrauma7812 I presently live in France... do you practice Internationaly as well ? Thanks
@@remifiengo1612 Hi Remi, I only practice within the jurisdictions of my licensing, New York and Florida
@@empowermentaftertrauma7812 thanks for answering though a part of me feel sad that I will never have the chance to meet your therapy. But please keep the work it's REALLY beautiful.
Which books have you read?
The actual books are not that important, what matters is topics that are somewhat mutually interesting, fiction, non fiction, inspirational, historical, biographical autobiographical, self help, etc.
This really helped to put the theory into practice. Will be watching it more than once, for sure. Thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
Is the talking to parts meant to be a sort of active imagining?
Its a way to be in relationship to different (at times conflicting) Parts of one's Self, a process of developing a "Self-to-Part relationship".
Beautiful! I'm happy for you, man.
