2901 - Swelly Surf
Просмотров 1279 месяцев назад
I' ve been paddling in the Menai Strait for many years now. I was hoping to make the 3000th paddle target around now, but Covid-19 slowed things down a little. But we are getting there, this was the 2901st paddle - and this minor milestone was luckily to fall on a big spring tide (10.2m Liverpool) which was enough to provide some good salty surf fun.
Newborough A Little Surf Fun

We paddled around the magical Llanddwyn Island on a sunny weekend morning. On the way back to Newborough Beach we made the most of a little surf that was venturing in. It was a morning of easy fun in the sun...

The ebb tide in the Menai Strait gives us a selection of moving water features for play and practice. Today we had an unusual combination of low pressure and sunshine - all laid on top of a 9.7 tide to provide a combination of kayaking challenge and chill. Fun all around...
'Trust Me' - Twin-Surf Bowcam
Просмотров 108Год назад
Trust Me Bowcam... This is how the 'Trust Me' vid looked from the bow. Out of the eddy, with enough speed to make the climb. Across the first gap with just enough height to stay. I'm on the lip of the wave now, trying to get a good shot of The Boss surfing, hopefully to be followed by dropping in for a double-surf. The blade loading is high, and I have to work across the lip, only just maintain...

A little twin surf on the Swelly Rock Wave, Menai Strait. Today I forego my usual boat, the Rockpool Taran, to try out the new GT2 prorotype from Rockpool. It surfs pretty well - though I did feel a little squeezed by an orange.

This video came about after hearing a comment that there was not much to do in The Swellies, paddling-wise. The Swellies is my daily paddling spot, and here I give a little insight to just why that is...
Downwind GT2 - 2

And a second clip from the downwind test run of the GT 2 in the Menai Strait. Here the waves are getting larger and in a moment of distraction I let the bow bury - which results in a little reaction-testing!

A short clip of a test paddle in the Rockpool GT2 Prototype as I go downwind from the Sea Zoo to Menai Bridge, in the Menai Strait. The boat seemed to handle it all quite well - fast and stable in testing conditions.
Surfing The Swellies - 'Lunar Low Pressure'
Просмотров 235Год назад
As is often the case, it's quality over quantity that makes for a good day out. Yesterday's paddle in The Swellies was a reminder of that. Here the tide was 'only' a 9.7m, 'big springs' top out around 10.3 or so around here, but when you match a 9.7 up with a decent low-pressure, then you get good waves that don't wash out so quickly. It's a great way to start the day. So come for a white-water...
Storm Agnes at Llyn Padarn.
Просмотров 241Год назад
Llyn Padarn, the lake at Llanberis, is about 3 km long, and so it does not have the longest fetch. However every now and then its position, nestled in the mountains, makes up for this. When the wind catches the lake just right, then you catch a glimpse of a very different character. Recently as Storm Agnes blew in I forewent my usual downwind down the Menai Strait and head up to see what Llyn P...

Sad but no surprise to see the skies filled with the results of geo engineering 😢 . Something which has happening for quite some time but now on a daily basis
Lovely ride👍
Cheers Jim.
Haha love it. You want to do a modern version for the youth of today - catching up with social media on your smartphone while surfing 😂 (Just make sure it's in a waterproof case and well tethered! Come to think of it, if you go over in the surf that's still risky, maybe pick up an old broken smartphone and just pretend to be flicking through a social media feed. With the camera mounted on the bow nobody would be able to see if the screen is off 😂)
7:21 Paddle home :-O Thought you'd have organised a shuttle for that. Long way to paddle back against the incoming tide. Mentally exhausting too i'd imagine after holding a relentless surf for all that time.
The paddle back is not too bad, you can make easy use of the eddies, and so it's fairly relaxed. And always good practice. We have done a shuttle before but you have to wait for the water level to rise enough to get out on the steep banks, and by that time you can paddle back.
Appreciate you uploading your mistakes too. Really valuable for me this - i have my eye on doing a tidal bore some day, i thought you had one chance to catch it and if it goes wrong then that's your day gone (well you could still go for a serene paddle but lose your one shot at some action). Looking at this, perhaps its more forgiving than i imagined 🤔 Though Tarans are exceptionally fast, think you could catch up with it again in a Delphin (155)?
The trick to getting a long ride is understanding the river and how the wave will form and fade. Make sure you are in the right place at the right time, and think ahead, to stay with the wave. The Taran is a reasonably fast boat but not exceptional, and of course the trick to getting back on the wave is not too lose it in the first place! But if you do then you need to chose good lines and use the water to get back. If you do that correctly with the Delphin it may be possible. However sometimes you are in a position where it is not possible, whatever boat you paddle. Losing the wave is never really the fault of the boat! The Dee Bore Guide is here: www.performanceseakayak.co.uk/Archive/dee-bore- Give it a go!
Great Video.....I'm guessing a 2.74m Mega Bullitt S won't have the 'Speed' to catch up in the greener sections?
Hi, I'm looking into the Taran right now, can you tell me what made you want to go for the 18 instead of the 16? cool video!
This looks like so much fun
I have three kayak destination goals: Anglesea, Skye, Snaefellsnes. I fell in love with Menai while on a side excursion into Wales while in England for a wedding. This is the kind of kayaking I love. Currently tethered to Hudson River/ LI/ Block Island region (still enjoyable!).
Decent.. was sent this video to watch and it was 👌🏽 Would look class if you got a drone in follow me mode when carrying out the paddle.
Agreed.
Good ride😊 Sam soul surfer
Fantastic.....power of nature.....must have been great.
Yes, it is always an impressive phenomenon.
Fantastic 👌👍
Great vid!
Thanks.
good skill
Cool stuff, great skills!
'Readers wifes' has a lot to answer for!
Thanks for sharing!
Next challenge: playing crosswords while surfing ! 😂
That is the coolest surf video.
🤣🤣🤣
😮
I never would have thought you could break out into the (boily) eddy within an arch in a long boat. Respect. So many happy memories of the Straites (Bangor 89 to 92).
And you can spin a long-boat there too: ruclips.net/video/arBokGz-_bw/видео.html
nice!
Performance kayak indeed! Great stuff, knowledge of the water and the skill it takes to play in it.....
Thanks for your comment.
1:57 You could go fishing? There are some big bass there.
That's beyond my abilities! I'll leave that to the experts.
I used to own a GT. What changes in the GT2 ?
It's early days of a prototype stage so there will likely be many changes yet. But currently over the original GT: this has a larger volume distribution rearward. It currently has a skeg and a rudder fitted with a thought to producing a boat that will take either as required. Cockpit size may change (larger). Hull profile change forward. Change to rocker. Cross section shape change centre.
You are a ZenMaster of effortless surfing. There are only a few on the planet, Boyan Zlatarev in Tarifa, and of course Oscar.
Good stuff! Pleasure to watch. Is your paddle shaft showing wear? I reckon you must have sanded it 100s, if not 1000s of times in its career.
Yes. I have heatshrink on the shaft, so that has worn rather than the shaft itself, but the heatshrink has worn through in a couple of places now. Thanks for your comment.
Great!!! Did you used 2 360-cams?
Yes it is a 360 camera. One on the bow, one on the stern.
What was the wind speed on that day?
I didn't measure it myself, but the forecast in the village (LLanberis) was for 26 mph strengthening to 31mph, plus gusts. The lake is a little more exposed.
🙄 Promo*SM
How come it sounds like your breathing through a breathing regulater for diving.
Smarty pants.. But cool all the same
😃 Briliant! Thanks for smiles🤙
Nice. Wing paddle yeaah. Awesome fun.
fantastic
Do you have the date this was recorded?
My word! That is astonishing. Ive stood on the banks watching the tide rip through. Put a massive grin on my face watching you do that. Can taste the salt.
Really enjoyed your efforts to capture this event, which was very exciting. You're obviously highly skilled both in Kayaking and video work, so well done and thanks for sharing.
Awesome man 👌
Darn, looks a bit drafty for the broadsheets
Haha! After teatime and reading I would realy like to see a supper ! E germany
Must’ve lifted your white water racer’s heart! Very nice!
And the heart of an old 'slammer too!
Lively spot.. nice
Serious skills ! The speed of the tide is impressive.
Pure class 😂
Can only imagine what walkers along the rivers edge thought as you went by.
Good point.
That kayak doesn't look that big... how the hell do you fit those massive balls in there??
It's bigger than it looks!😁
@@performanceseakayak that's what she said
How do you time meeting with the bore?
I've paddled it a numerous times, so I know what time it arrives (roughly) at my meeting point. Then it's just a case of setting off with enough time to paddle down. Is that what you meant?
Do you arrive at a certain time before or after high tide?
Yes, all my timings are relative to Highwater Liverpool.
