CONGRATS EVERYONE!
🥲
The Mars we’re gentle giants. They never dropped bombs on people there only missions have been helping people both as military transports and water bombers.❤
Its sad to see this magnificent flying tanker be retired, but its about 79 years old. Future generations will have to depend on videos to see it in flight & will never have the privilege of being eyewitness to this majestic bird in flight. Its four Merlin Rolls Royce engines generate 10,000 hp & the throb of the engines vibrate your chest as the piston engines generate their power. Martin Mars in flight truly is a magnificent awe inspiring sight to behold. Coulson donated the Martin "Hawaii" Mars to the Aviation Museum in Sidney, B.C. I am glad that it is staying in British Columbia. I'm from Port Alberni & have become used to seeing the Martin Mars water bomber stationed on Sproat Lake ever since I was a kid. It will be sorely missed.
Great
Im so glad the Hawaii Mars has finally made it to a nearby museum instead languishing here on Sproat Lake as it has for years. Months from now we might experience it again with the current restoration of the Philippine Mars to flying condition, with its new navy blue livery for a long haul final flight to Tucson Arizona USA Air museum.
We’ll miss her dearly.
Really excellent to hear Wayne’s story, both prior to owning the aircraft and building his business around their use. It’s fantastic that both Hawaii and Phillipines Martin Mars flying boats operational life were extended by Wayne purchasing them.
She never should have been taken out of service. The mars does the work of 10 helicopters
At least when it's at the BC Aviation Museum, everyone will be able to see it up close, instead of just the lucky few who have a Boat on Sproat Lake. Plus it will be protected from Vandalism much more!
Today is the day...
This is the plane from "Raiders of the lost ark". San Francisco scene. In 1981 Indiana Jones flew with it.
No, that airplane was a Short Solent Mark III. The production crew was going to use a Martin M-130 but discovered the Short Solent undergoing restoration in Oakland. To save money they shot the boarding scene with the Short Solent and the flying scene was done using a model.😀
What will happen to all of the spare engines and parts that originally came with them?
Well, for me that is another reason to return to BC and to see this iconic piece of aerial firefighting in BC Aviation Museum at Victoria sometime not too far in the future ... 🤓😎
I'm so sad!
It was an icon of my youth. Had many birthdays at sprout provincial park with it as a back drop. Bonus was watching it work.
I love to see planes like this, and although the time of the flying boats is history, it should be kept alive. These planes are magnificent!
Tourist dollars for the South Island
Please tell me you video taped her final trip around Port Alberni on her farewell tour?
She hasn't left yet, but we hope to have a camera on her when she does!
@@TheScoopOnPortAlberni-bc9bt That would be amazing! I am hoping you plan on sharing it here on this youtube channel. FYI When will she be leaving to head to Victoria?
Thx to the Coulson team for taking such good care of these old birds!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Very cool video
Thanks!
800 thousand people live on Vancouver Island. 700 hundred thousand of them are mostly between Nanaimo and Victoria. It’s great that they’ll all be able to say a final goodbye on it’s flyover.
My question now is how are they going to get Phillipine Mars to Arizona?
Fly it
I want to build more of these.
Phillipines Mars is not going to phoenix, it is going to the Tucson at the Pima Air&Space museum, adjacent the world's biggest aircraft boneyard, run by the USAF. I look forward to visiting both planes as I live in Vic and have a 2nd home in Tucson.
Well done VI
Is it done flying now?
Ok people I love your videos of these aircraft but could you also show more videos of the other ' Philippine Mars " to let us see what and where it is going to be : )
I'm glad you're enjoying our videos of the Hawaii Mars! We will indeed be showing more of the Philippine Mars as she is made ready for her big move as well, which will be coming up in the next few months although we don't have a date yet. :)
How come they never seem to fly the Phillipine Mars always the Hawaii?
Because they were taking parts from Phillipine to keep Hawaii flying.
@@mcnut1 Gotcha👍
@@Dbodell8000auctally they weren't . The Philippines mars was suppose to be donated to a mesuem in Florida in like 2012 or 2016 that's why it's in u.s navy liverly. However the plan to donate it failed to it sat ever since
You'll be seeing more of the Phillipine Mars in the coming weeks as it is being prepared for its flight south.
@@TheScoopOnPortAlberni-bc9bt That is excellent news. Thank you for the work you do.
I got to sit in the pilots seat in May and make airplane engine noises. Farewell HM, you're going to a good retirement home. Thanks to Coulson for keeping the incredible HM alive and top condition.
Gord's gotta future in television... Way to go Gord! 😃
Now it will sit outside in the Victoria weather and rot?
You know not of what you speak.
@@clivekitchener1625 You did see that was a question, right?
No it's being donated to a mesuem that will maintain it in a displayable condition. Before the test flights before the final flight it hadn't flown since 2016 due to the fact that it's very expensive to operate even with government support
Preservation is a beautiful thing!
Seeing that these planes were so effective at fighting fires why don't they build new ones with a modern twist? Especially in theses times where we could really benefit from them. These other smaller ones almost seam kind of useless.
The smaller ones do not require massive/long lakes to fill up in. By the time a Martin Mars has dumped and refilled the little tractor teams will have moved 2,3,4 or 5 times more water at a much lower cost. Also, the Mars are so inaccurate they have to pull front line crews from the fire while they are in operation. The Mars also had a tendency to advance the fire by spreading sparks from the large cushion of air that comes with the large volume of water it dumped.
CL-415s tend to fight fire in squads. Also keep in mind water bombers typically focus on containing the fires, not putting them out directly.
Also not to mention that there where only 7 built with 2 in existence to spare parts are getting harder to come by
Why doesn't the Canadian government commission 5 or 6 new planes like this, and station them at strategic points across Canada? It's not like fire situtations are going to improve over time.
They are too large for most fires. They need a large lake to fill up with water. They are not maneuverable enough for tight valleys. It makes more sense to have more smaller aircraft that can deliver the same amount of water over multiple planes.
Justin thinks our money is better spent giving it to the Ukraine.
The fact that this machine isn't stationed at a large lake is infuriating. In 2017, having this at Lac LaHash (sic?) Would have been very useful. Keeping tools in an area where they can be useful makes more sence than keeping only small units so they can suit the tightest of locations.
Don’t ask government to do something that requires real world, balanced perspectives as in the above, first reply. While the Mars is an amazing and unique “solution” for a narrow range of fires might be one “trade-off”. There are many other application-specific considerations that need to be encompassed in an aerial fire- fighter.
No to worry folks, now that the government is involved with de Havilland Canada to build the new CL-515 series of aerial tankers, we should have the first one roll off the line by 2035 or so...and i'm sure there wont be any delays or cost overruns!
Good to see them saved. Much better than getting recycled. At some point you have to say enough is enough. When you look at the age of the airframes and the horrendous cost of the engines, it isn't viable to keep them flying. Everything is 70-80 years old.
Absolutely and the aircraft today is more better
✈
SHAME ON OUR BC GOVERNMENT THAT COULNT FIND THE CASH TO SUPPORT IT VERY SAD
if you only knew the politics behind of chartering this aircraft... I'll leave that laundry for another day though.....
It's a aircraft from WW2, it's nearly impossible to find spares for this aircraft anymore
@@pythons206 thats why they manufacture every part now.
Sad that the Phillipine mars will be dumped in the desert hundreds of miles from a water landing area
They need to put it back to the 1970s FIFT markings
Coming to the BC Aviation Museum at the Victoria International Airport in August for retirement and display
Is that it? One short minute? I want my money back..........
And the fukking GVT won't give the conpany any work contracts. Canada burns, and our federal and provincial governments choose to fiddle. Arson isn't climate change, the budget does NOT "balance itself" and the liberals, the ndp, the bloc, (who gives af about the green party) aallll want to be the kings of the castle and they are willing to cut off our collective noses to spite our collective faces. This isn't about "just old airplanes"! Those planes could be fighting fires! Instead, they sit, as pawns in a political chess game.
She needs to do one more drop on the Fire near Sooke Potholes , doubt that Shawnigan Lk is going to be big enough for the pickup though.
It has many times loaded out of the Sooke basin. Bring that machine back.
@@clayten1 The fact that she wasn't wanted or used elsewhere in Canada, the US or Europe speaks volumes, get over it.
Heard they were gonna retire the Mars, possibly this year? That’d be sad.
It has been retired from firefighting for probably a decade already, bigger isn't always better.
I just love those old flying boats.
The fires didn’t love them😂
We love them too!
Good to see
This is so great! Love the music!!
How about doing some investment in 8427?
