This is me at work. I repaired Joe's Chicago White Sox HO World Series Train. Didn't know he worked for channel 5 news. I was swamped for the next 6 weeks. Thanks Joe ! The opening clip is me on Model-Railroad TV, Early 2000's, before You Tube.
Z scale Tehachapi Pass Layout Army Train

Follow the army train once around the LNZ Tehachapi Pass Layout. the layout is now complete after 4 years. Complete as in no more bare plywood showing. A train layout is never truly complete, I will spend years adding scenes and details. Next step is more (and I mean many more) trees and bushes . You may notice the wooden arch trestle being from the original LNZ home division. ruclips.net/video...

Halloween 2021. Scenery update on the loop section of the layout. I want to give a special thank you to the folks that run the Tehachapi Pass rail cams. These cams are my inspiration and guide to build this layout. I have yet to visit this spot in my travels but I am working on a trip to the new overlook next spring or summer.

Passengerfest. Follow Amtrak once around the Tehachapi Pass. You can really see the scale, size, reference as the train goes by the wall outlet. One lap about 5 min. Time to pull the trains into the yard, cover them up and go to work on scenery.

maybe its just me, but i just prefer the click-clack and sounds of the locos running over music. All credit tho, that is an amazing layout.
This isn't Z scale, this is N scale. Those are Atlas switches, Atlas does not make Z scale equipment.
Love layouts that you need a map to follow the route!! Have the same experience and feeling with the HO scale San Diego Model Railroad. Great job and a memorable layout tour. What Model railroading is about for me. Thanks
Thank you for the nice comment. This is just one of three large Z layouts I have built, be sure to check out my other videos. I am currently in the process of moving the tehachapi pass layout to my new house up north.
👋😍👍

Aliens in the middle?
War of the Worlds model kit, goes with Micro Trains War of the Worlds series. I haven't filmed that yet, I'll make a video of that and post soon.
It's been 5 years now. This is my 3rd large Z layout since I switched from N back in 2005. I have officially retired from full time working and I have purchased a new home. The layout was designed and built to be moved. I will be keeping the Loop and the West Cable bridge and river sections. The yard will be torn up and rebuilt at the new location. I am currently filming lots of trains for a final video of the layout as it exists. This is a short clip from that. I will post some of the deconstruction and construction from the new house. Watch for the Tehachapi Big Trains Video. Thank You to all that have viewed , liked and commented. RailRoadRon AKA Grampa Choo Choo
Love to see your layouts in person at shows Ron, thanks for posting. Hope you’re doing well!
All is weell. The traveling layout I have sold. You will still see it at shows around the mid west now operated by A group of guys running a company called " Scaletraxx " Check them out, Scaletraxx.com . thank You for the comment.
Thing I love about Z is how so many folks get into it to squeeze what they can into a small space, but by the 2nd or 3rd layout, Z scaliers are stretching it out to wider curves and longer runs and epic scenery, Looks great , thank you for sharing. :)
Thank You. The Loop was not in the original design. When I got to this part of the room I came up with the idea, I chalked it out on the floor and found a way ( as you said ) to squeeze it in. the approach curves are 24" diameter and the Loop 44"
¿Y las naves de la Guerra de los mundos? ¡Buenísimo! 👏👏👏
Thank You. War of the Worlds model was built by my Grandson, Cooper.
Tremendous, Nice & Long with plenty of Rolling Stock Freight Cars Superb Z Scale ROCKS !!!
Thank You, The loop is built at 75% of scale. Have not found the maximum train length. This all the inter model cars I have.
Gotta love that!
Gotta love trains, Thanks for commenting
Beautiful!
Thank You very much
Looks fantastic, very well done! What diameter is your loop?
Thank You very much. The loop is built at about 80% to scale. From the center of the double track it is 44" across. A 2% grade, the rest of the layout uses 1 1/2 % max grade.
@@rroadron7970 Very impressive! Scale-wise, yours would have to be about the largest model of the Loop I think I have ever seen. Even the La Mesa San Diego Club's HO layout does not scale out to quite that large. The real Loop is larger than most folks realize (like 1150 ft. diameter) but you have done a great job capturing the feel of it. It's also great that you run the trains near scale speed, that really enhances the effect. Thanks for sharing!
very nice 👏👏
Thank You. Like you I just like to keep building so I am excited to move and start over. Maybe I'll add a second level at the new house. See new comment from me at the top.
RRroadRon is famous! That’s awesome.
It's a pleasure seeing works like this... Great job and thanks for sharing.
Very nice layout, thank you for sharing!
Looks great! What diameter is your Loop?
Nice layout. Got the St Paul DT airport too! Nice! I grew up Coon Rapids.
i'm a bit sad rn and this video helped me, love the scenery, love the trains, love the sound, soothing! Very good, i recommend!
Wow, I gotta say there is some great scenery work and the layout variability is nice- BUT I did not see a single view that a low photo or video could convey the illusion of full size rail. The arangement with the middle area no doubt makes it convenient to manage but destroys any chance of a good perspective for the spectator. Looking at the back of tables with curtains draped accross them is not my idea of a realistic layout. Every view needs a background canvas or board to at least paint some sky on if the background is not part of the layout. Seems to have completely lost the plot on what the illusion is supposed to be for the spectator in exchange for some handling convenience. A lesson in what not to do, thank you for that.
Thank you! I've been wanting to do a z scale military layout but just can't find many examples. Awesome.
Thank You, There is product available with modern American armor. I am currently working on a War of the Worlds module to go with the Micro Trains set. This will be a War scene with bomb craters and burnt up trees, smoke and lights. Real dark, gray and black tones.
Ha, a lot of money in 'at train, ain't lyin'...
Pig's Eye Yd , what a whore in the winter.
Even more amazing than your early work, which is still way beyond my imagination!!
Thank You. This is supposed to by my ultimate layout. No plans to build another. Large one, that is. I am working on a small War of the Worlds module to go with the Micro Trains War of Worlds Train.
Wow!
hello what is the incline or the grade for your loop ?
The grade on the loop is 2%. the rest of the layout is 1 to 1.5% grades. I need four loco's to get the stack train up the hill. Coming on the next video will be the Big Trains. The stack train is now long enough to go over itself on the loop. Actually, I will probably do a Christmas Train first. then the big trains. Ron
You can see the Christmas Train parked in the storage yard, by West Cable.
thx a lot @@rroadron7970 , I am considering an helix to upgrade my owen layout. Rewatching your videos: your teachapi loop is awesome (I like the details like the portal)
Great layout! Where did get the z scale army tank flatcars? I need some! Thanks George
Hi George, Thank You for the comments. There is a story behind the military cars. I bought the flat cars for 7 to 10 dollars, the military pieces were given to me by an N Scaler. If you look close you'll see the armor pieces are German, so we say it's captured vehicles being transported to a museum. The cars are metal and the military pewter so the train is quite heavy. hence the need for the 3 loco's. Take a look at Z scale Monster.com or Z scale Hobo.com and look at what the price of a flat car with military load is worth today. I have been running the army train for about 17 years. Ron
A very nice layout. Thanks for sharing
Thank You working on a new video now. The Christmas train.
Great layout and video! Are all threee locomotives powered? I used to be able to only run one powered unit per line.
They are all powered The army train is heavy with metal train cars and pewter on the military. 2 locos would do but I like 3
Great idea and a beautiful layout Ron! Nice meeting you at the shop earlier today!
Thank You
you need people and animals
expensive and HTF stuff.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank You Big Train video coming next.
Awesome layout! Where did you get the War of the Worlds spaceships?
It is a Pegasus model kit built by my Grandson, Cooper. His first kit build, Cooper was 8 when he made this. The kit also comes in a already built kit. I got it where I work. Hub Hobby Richfield and Little Canada, Minnesota.
very nice layout and video; may be the cows were killed by the aliens !
LOL! I see another pile over by the farm. Thank You for the comments.
AWESOME, EXCELLENT and PERFECT!!!!! Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work.
Thank You. Next video will be the 2 big trains.
Wow, Just Wow!
Thank You, Watch for the next video when that stack train passes over itself on the loop. That will be a super Wow
That was a nice run, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Bob. So when I Started the layout Tehachapi wasn't part of the design. That was about the time I discovered these rail cams. West Cable was by design and the yard was built from the Barstow rail cam, the way it curves on the east end. I added the station recently. With 2 thirds of the layout done I came up with the Loop design. Caliente and Bealville I just threw in there because they were sorta like the places.
Mind blowing layout for Z scale.
Thank You. This layout no longer exists. Check out my newest, just completed. ruclips.net/video/0eaINKefCMU/видео.htmlsi=6B4YLC5aIAKnqsmC
Man, you’ve got some huge collection of equipment, crossing all eras. Do you get your trains from a particular supplier? Ive Googled Z scale starter sets & been bombarded with N scale adverts. I live in remote Australia, so any purchases would be mail order. Id like to get started, any suggestions?
Yeah looking forward to doing my next Z layout, and like you have discovered, it looks so much better with sweeping curves rather than "as tight as it can take". I also did a lot of work with the marklin switches on the last couple of layouts, found out how much they will take with ballast, painting the rails, etc, Found out that you pretty much have to solder in extra jump wires so you don't get shorts on them, and that its a good trick to get some 600 or 400 grit wet and dry sand paper and use it under the working part of the switch (and don't ballast near that area) so it still looks good but doesn't get fouled up in any way. Really like your layout, nice job.
Thank You for the comments. I give a tremendous amount of credit to the Marklin turnouts for the smooth operation of the trains. I have used all the different available tracks but my go to is Peco SL200. Check out my newest layout recently completed after 4 years. This video is just a small clip. My Largest layout yet, the entire thing is the Tehachapi Pass. Currently filming a complete layout video. ruclips.net/video/0eaINKefCMU/видео.htmlsi=6B4YLC5aIAKnqsmC
one of the great things about the finer scales is the seriously broad curves you can create in much less space than HO or S. O gauge is humongous in comparison.
Quite a lot of scenic work for a Z-scale layout,a nd making scenes for a scale this small is not an easy task! I am curious why you didn't weather the cars and engines, though - is Z-scale not conductive to weathering, or is just a project for a later time?
a lot of guys don't weather their stuff, but if you model SP- you almost HAVE to make stuff look GRUBBY
Fantastic layout.
This is an engineering masterpiece. I came late to model railroading in 1999 and built many modules to take the Golden~Blackhawk & Central City around the country to train shows ,,,helped along by many friends. Seeing how wonderfully smooth and controlled your train sets run is a pleasure to watch. Bolting together and unbolting the modules for 64 shows during 18 years on the road did not translate to a perfectly function railroad. Yours is a dream to watch. Thanks for showing this. Cordially, Mister Dave
Thank You for the nice comment. I am setting up today for a county fair. I have 6 layouts on display for the next 7 days 11 hours per day, It takes a certain passion .
the real accomplishment will be to keep it running that way. are you guys tired of track-cleaning yet?
Perfect Z scale layout. Many 180 degree railroad strack curve.Price? Thousands American dollars, I’am sure?
Thank you, estimate this layout, travel system and trailer $ 15,000.
Great layout; worthy of the term model.
Thank you, This just a portion of the layout.
Can you run 100 car trains in Z scale?
Yes. When I first built this layout it was designed for the 100 car train. I had a video but at the time RUclips was not a thing so I posted it on Facebook.
you can run 100-car trains in any scale as long as you have the power (both in loco AND track power) and the traction.
Very nice layout. We’ve spoken in person at the local shop before, you sold me a switcher and some Milwaukee Road freight in N-Scale. I’ll have to stop by one of these days Take care Ron
Well, Thanks for watching and commenting. I am currently working on an N Scale novelty layout at the store I work on it on Saturdays 2-4.
Wonderful to watch, thank you. I'm impressed with how smooth everything runs. I lost interest in trains, mine were always herky-jerky no matter how much I cleaned track and wheels or how many feeders I added.
Thank You. Z scale does require frequent track cleaning. I have to clean it about every 2 weeks or about 8 hours of running.
its all in the oil. we have a smaller Z-scale layout at our club and the bottom line is nobody wants to maintain the track. so its just a display now. the Z scale guys swapped dummies in there so nothing expensive would 'roll away'....
adding feeders won't help that problem- the rails are either hot or dead. we use conducting lubricant on our Z layout (when we want to run it which is usually when there are non-club members present)
What a great layout. Thanks for sharing 👍 Greetings Joe 😊
Thanks Joe. Have you seen the cab ride video?
