Wayne Gravatt - Fishhead Fly Tying Videos
США
Добавлен 14 дек 2019
Fishhead Videos is the channel of 68 year old flyfishing master Wayne Gravatt, Wayne comes from a fishing background and was exposed to flyfishing as a young man. He started tying his own flies to save money. The flies he ties have been top sellers at the numerous fly shops throughout western Montana. Wayne shares his knowledge and wisdom to fellow tyers and fisherman. Hope you enjoy the videos, and most importantly catching more fish on these feature flies. Thanks for watching!
The Newell - USE WET OR DRY
A big profile fly with qualities of a dryfly and a nymph. Use this fly with no floatant, so it rides just under the water. This fly is easy to tie and very effective. Give 'em hell.

The October Caddis Emerger - USE THIS METHOD FOR ALL CADDIS PATTERNS
Просмотров 603Месяц назад
Simplicity being the theme here. A pretty good size bug, tied on a size 8 hook. Fish this fly with weight, generally as a dropper. You can generally see these start to hatch out or 'emerge' in late August, into October and beyond. You can use this method and materials for all types of caddis patterns.
The Stone Fly Nymph - FOR BIG BROWNS!
Просмотров 549Месяц назад
Stone Fly Nymphs aren't straight, they have curvature in their body, that said, I'm a big believer in using materials that "show life." Watch how I use lead wire, a swim-cap (yes a swim-cap!) for the segmentation, a magic marker for color, and Swiss straw for a life-like tail. Another BIG bug that can catch BIG fish.
The Wire Worm - SUPER EFFECTIVE!
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.Месяц назад
Another variation of the San Juan Worm. So easy to tie, so you don't need to worry about losing them. As we all know if you're not losing nymph patterns you're not deep enough, and as a result, you won't catch many fish. The pattern sinks like a rock and gets down where the fish are. Give 'em hell.
The San Juan Worm - SIMPLY THE BEST!
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 месяца назад
There are a thousand ways to tie a San Juan Worm, but I'm a big advocate of simplicity. Complex and hard to tie files are not in my vocabulary, I just don't want any part of those. Use this as a dropper off of a Mega Prince or Jumping Jack Flash. Tie a bunch of these for the early season. The Mega Prince - MULTIPURPOSE, BIG and BUGGY
Просмотров 8202 месяца назад
There are so many ways to fish this fly. It could be a big buggy stone fly nymph, it could be a leech. Invented for the upper Madison River. It will work anywhere.
The Freshwater Shrimp - THE 2.5 MINUTE FLY
Просмотров 5352 месяца назад
This fly is one of the the BEST patterns for mountain lakes. Try this fly. You'll be very surprised at how well it works, and how easy it is to tie. Two and half minutes is all it takes.
The Laser Worm - A GREAT WINTER FLY!

Simplicity is a good thing. This one is really easy to tie in many colors. Watch how I use a balloon to create segmentation on this killer worm pattern. Great for fishing the lower Madison River in Montana.
The Micro Leech

Be sure to tie this one on with a Rapala knot so you get a lot movement in the water. More info on the knot is here: www.animatedknots.com/rapala-knot
The Yellow Sally

I've never fished this fly, but I'm confident it will work. That's all I have to say.
The Mayfly Emerger
Просмотров 3964 месяца назад
The simplest of simple and so effective. I fish this fly as a nymph with a little weight added to the line. I learned this one from a guide on the Big Hole River in Montana. It really catches fish!
The Adult Damselfly - Montana - Georgetown Lake
Просмотров 1528 месяцев назад
This is your go to fly on large bodies of water such as Georgetown Lake in Southwestern Montana. It's the EASY way to tie up a popular and effective top water bug. Fish with 3x or 4x tippet. Expect explosive takes!
The Leech - FISH IT DEEP
Просмотров 33111 месяцев назад
You don't need complex flies to be successful. This fly is another really easy one to tie. You have to fish it deep so you might get snagged up, but that's alright, because this one is so easy to tie. Special thanks to the #Moclub in #missoula . The Floating Damsel Fly Nymph - LESS IS BETTER!
Просмотров 320Год назад
You'll catch more fish on slim flies. This is another easy one to put together. Put a split shot about 16" above it on a short leader. Strip it with a slow retrieve. This is what were going for: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damselfly#/media/File:Blue-tailed_damselfly_(Ischnura_elegans)_nymph.jpg
The Train - A Floating Caddis Pattern - EASY TO TIE!
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.Год назад
I'm not really into flies that are difficult to tie, so the beauty of this one is its sheer simplicity. It has an excellent look and it's easy. Use this one on rivers with a spit shot or on lakes in the slop line. This video also includes tips on buying supplies as well as a few fishing tactics you can use. I also answer a couple questions asked in the comments of other videos.

Why did you use the bloom?
Hmm, I'm not sure what you mean.
I like simple⭐️
Words to live by!
What did you finish the fly with? Nail Polish?
Hello @ryanriley1342. It's actually Rumpf Head Cement. I just put it in an old fingernail polish bottle so it's easier brush-on.
These are some nice fly patterns. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you like them @RobertBussinger. I appreciate you checking out the videos.
I have been simplifying my fly patterns also. It doesn’t make sense to me to spend a ton of time tying flies when I could be fishing.
Very well said! Thanks for dropping by!
Nice one thanks
You're most welcome. Give 'em hell.
Killer pattern for flows rivers
Thanks for stopping by!
Nice fly & I refer to it as a searching pattern, stripped or under a indicator works,I first came across it on a video from Caddis Fly in Oregon over 10 years back, still produces, tight lines & bent rods 🤙 🇺🇸
Thanks for stopping by! Glad you like the fly. I appreciate the kind words.
I shared the video on Facebook hopefully it will get some subscriptions for you. Please keep making videos I always enjoy them.

We need some of these in the shop next year! Great pattern Wayne!
Hi Matt! Thanks for saying and thanks for stopping by. I got it covered for you. Wayne.
Never heard about worm ... Thank you for sharing your secrets.
My pleasure. Thanks for stopping by!
Nice looking worm pattern thanks
Thanks for saying so. I appreciate it.
I wanted to let you know that I tied your damsel fly (first time fly tying) and tried it last week when I was at GT lake over in Rainbow Bay). I landed a total of 8 good sized (18-22 inch) rainbow trout. Thank you for your tutorial!
That's awesome Jared! So glad to hear it. Keep giving 'em hell. WG
Think that fly would work back east ?
Hell yes...anywhere.
I wanted to tie a couple up but when I checked I only had olive crystal flash.you call for peacock.does the difference matter ?
...for the body, sure, you could certainly use olive crystal flash.
@FishheadVideos I was thinking the wing with olive crystal flash instead of peacock crystal flash
How many decades you been tying ?
Started tying when I was 26, I'm 72 now, so I've been at it a long time. Still love it! Thanks for asking.
@@FishheadVideos working on 5 decades....I can tell
Thanks for the shout out Wayne, really enjoying your work!
Awesome
Good to see some of the old patterns that still work get a little recognition. Good job Wayne!
Wayne that is quite a hill that is formed when wrapping & tying off the hackle, how can that be improved so the wrap will not slide forward & distort the silhouette?
Thanks for stopping by! The answer to your question is available in this video: ruclips.net/video/OohLgJKb8yg/видео.html
I just found your RUclips channel and subscribed. Thanks for sharing the videos
what bobbin do you prefer?
Appreciate the question. The answer is available in this video:ruclips.net/video/OohLgJKb8yg/видео.html Thanks for viewing!
suggest asking for sub and like at the beginning of your videos, roughly 60% of viewers drop off at the 30 ish second mark.
I subscribed! Interesting fly, it would make a good hopper dropper set up I should think.
Why name a fly after a guy who killed people and is living at SUPERMAX?
Nice
Great fly!
Actually a pretty simple tie , I like it . I’m sure Ted is proud. I would keep an eye out for any letters from Florence CO especially if you didn’t get approval to use his name . He’s kind of funny like that . Thanks for sharing .
Thank you for the video! This is a great little micro streamer/nymph pattern and I have taught this to my adult ed classes in Stevensville, thanks Wayne!
Very cool! Glad you stopped by Wesley. Glad you're out there giving them hell. :-)
Hey, quick question: How do you decide to counter-wrap your wire vs wrapping it the same way as your body? I usually counter-wrap unless I'm trying to match a body material that already has segmentation.
Great question! Interestingly, I believe, if you wrap the under materials TIGHT, there's no need to counter-wrap. I've fished hundreds of my flies for a long long time and do not have issues with the underlying material unraveling. So the answer is...if you feel that counter wrapping is needed, I'd say go for it.
Just discovered your channel, and I'm digging it. I like how you explain that practice won't make you perfect if you don't correct your mistakes. When my son is training for his Special Olympics sports (track & field, hockey, and bowling) I tell him "Practice makes champions. Nobody is perfect." Keep up the good work!
Wise words! All the best to you and your son. So glad you found our channel! Glad you like, too!
How am I just finding these videos.. the shankill butchers!!
Glad you like Marshall!
Such a great quick little caddis pattern. Awesome thanks for sharing

Awesome
Nice fly and technique. Thanks Wayne for the video and instruction.
No problem 👍
sorry but I do not like the way you tie flies . bye
Thank you for the videos. I started using the Poly Yarn and it saved me a lot of money buying bulk.
Glad I could help!
ring neck pheasant feather are also blue. You said copper wire ?is what your using silver?
Nicely done! That's a full synthetic version of Roman Moser's Balloon Caddis.
2# of marabou! Yes, That's certainly a lot.
Yeah, That "Pigboy Crabshaw" response on the stream would definitely earn a "WTH?"
Yep, fish do not count. Two sets of legs is impression enough.
Glad you agree James. Thanks for stopping by and watching.
Love that bug!!!
Wayne love your channel and patterns looking forward to trying some of them. I was just in a March Brown hatch a few days ago here on the Henry's Fork wish I would have had your emerger! Keep up the good videos!!
Thanks Joe, I really appreciate it! Give 'em hell!
I tied a couple dozen of these just last week gray tail and wing with a very light tan body, killer fly Wayne. Good to see you my friend😃
Good to hear Steven. Hope you had some good luck with the fly!
