Unreal Engine Study Hall with Professor Ben Blau

Just a place to put my stuff.
Back to Basics: Doors
This was for an intro class that I teach. I thought I'd put it here in case it helps anyone. (Yes, I know how to use BPIs, but this is a beginner’s course. They'll learn about interfaces later.) I hope this is helpful to someone.

This is nothing in particular. I'm testing some things. I should have tessellated the brick.

When measuring the main 5 channels (not the LFE), please leave the subwoofer unmuted. I’m color-blind, and couldn’t tell that it wasn’t unmuted when measuring the main five speakers. This is important if your subwoofer is being used to fill in the bass extension for the main five outputs, and is separate from the LFE. Apologies for the oversight!
Skyglass + Wrinkled Green Screen
Просмотров 1485 месяцев назад
This was a quick test in my office, with fluorescent ceiling lights, and a very wrinkled green screen. The background was just a preset, but the app lets you bring in entire 3D Unreal Engine Maps. I used no color correction, but the Skyglass app has a beta feature called AI Relighting. I can’t wait to try all of it. This is the worst it will ever look, and I’m already impressed!

Boring...
That stare into the camera at the very end is legendary
Oh man the ASMR is strong on this one
He manipulates a card to the top after removing the King and then knows her card gets cut next to the top card (which he knows). He keeps reminding us she shuffled the deck, but hes the last person to mess with it.
Excellent tutorial!
Thank you! You are too kind!
Boring
Boring enough to have sold many thousands all over the world. Post something of yours!
Would you be able to explain, what the different trace channels in the Occlusion Settings do?
Yeah, the pink noise makes it nigh impossible to hear you in certain parts. Would be mighty helpful to have accurate captions if you don't want to re-record the video (I wouldn't).
promo sm ✌️
Hi Instead of the delay and bool you should use "Initial Life Span" in your actor Class Defaults. Furthermore, to avoid errors on an actor that is pending kill or already garbage collected, there's an Is Valid function that essentially does what you did with your does exist bool.
I'd swear that watch is a Shinola. I'm a watch nerd, *and I am fairly confident that is what that is. Awesome performance, I've watched it several times trying to figure out the trick to it. I know nothing of card tricks but that is very cool. You had a good subject too.
This is the voice I want to leqd me to the other side.
A very hypnotic delivery and a nice performance. Had me hooked through the whole thing!
He sounds a little like Jesse Ventura.
great video!!!
❤
brillant
Comment for attention to your video! Helpful!!!!
bro how come i'm not able to preview my skeleton mesh to add a fullbody ik rig???? did you skip anything, how did you get all the bones to show up on your none rig skeleton mesh, thank you so much for your personal help....
dope tutorial broddy, thank you so much....
Thanks for watching! Today I’ll be making one on line traces, crosshairs and aiming. I’m always so glad to hear that they’ve helped someone!

Thanks so much! It makes me so happy that these are helpful to some people! I really appreciate the feedback. If there is anything in particular you’d like to see demonstrated, I take requests! 🤓
love the basic technique while also allowing me to be able to not only follow along, but also understand it in a way i can retain the knowledge as well. My favorite part about this lesson was how you would explain it, do it, explain it again, do something else real quick, then come back to remind us once more,. Almost like checking to see if your kids brushed their teeth lol i would love to see some more hands on stuff, like blueprint interfaces, save and load mechanic, play menu, and maybe even interactions (i.e. doors, benches, etc) some good focus on animation (even if it covers just the ground) but also teach us how to build onto it, and maybe show us examples, tips, tricks, etc. Another big one is self diagnosing bugs. when you run into a bug and you don't know what's prohibiting you from doing the exact thing in a tutorial, guide, or wiki. Looking forward to future videos!
I just posted one recently about Blueprint Interfaces. You should be able to find it in the playlist!
I am new to Unreal, and I feel stupid for even leaving this comment, but this was super educational, informative, and all around a great lesson. I subscribed, and I am looking forward to learning with you!
Thanks, Michael! I’m not a professional RUclipsr, but I drop these whenever I get a chance. But it’s fairly frequently. It’s a privilege to know that they are helpful! I hope that my videos continue to make a positive difference for you! 🙏
You should definitely think about regular uploads! You're a great teacher
@@michealtattershall8411 I made a new video today! Please check it out on the channel!
One of my absolute all-time favourite ESP routines! I discovered it first with Eugene Burger's performance. Thank you, Ben, for this!
I’m so happy that you like it, and that you’ll continue to perform it for years to come. Thank you for the compliment! Keep it secret, keep it safe… 🤓
@@benblaumentalism6245 Dear Ben, thank you for your reply. I have also presented it for younger audiences with Similo Fables cards, using the intimate connection between the hero and its nemesis, and so forming pairs which are linked by that antagonistic rapport between them. In the end, instead of matching ESP cards, one hero and its nemesis match and then, of course, the other 4 pairs match also. Though the technical aspect of the routine is respected absolutely (I wouldn't dare pretending that I would be capable of modifying it) the context allows for a great experience for the audience.
Fantastic! I love that you’ve made it your own!
you are so good to learn.... and thanks
Thank you! I’m so glad you found this useful!
Another great video. Thanks for taking the time to explain interfaces and give 2 immediately useful examples. I look forward to putting this knowledge into practice.
Thank you, maestro! Part 2 is going to show how to use traces (like line traces, or “raycasts” as they’re known in other software) to interact with objects when you’re in range and just looking at them. They don’t need collision boxes, necessarily. A line trace can use the forward vector of the camera to determine the object of interest when you’re looking at it. I’ll also demonstrate a system that will create a visual cue that something is intractable when you look at it, such as an outline, shader modification, or a text pop up above the object. It’s a little harder to set up, but not that bad. Thank you for watching!
Excellent video, you make it so easy to understand! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain, you definitely have gained a new follower Sir! Keep the tutorials coming please
Glad it was helpful! 🙏
Where's the trick?

I want to replace the explosions with VDBs. I just haven't learned that yet!
Thank you this was very helpful for something I was stuck on.
It’s a little different now in UE5. I’ll have to make a new video!

“The house of magic has many rooms.” -Eugene Burger
@@benblaumentalism6245 A wonderful quote. Eugene was the Lao Tse of magic.
The second time I watched this I was able to guess the word before he revealed it.
The second time! 😂
I think the main problem is that her scale is too large. I also rounded to 1.78. It’s really 1.77777778. I’ve never taken the time to compare how visible the difference is.
borrrrrrrrr...
It’s not meant for you.
The first time ever I've been pleased to see an advert pop up part way through a trick! 😄"You pick a card and I'll find it" is intrinsically a boring plot, adding pointless procedure merely extends the tedium. Although I have to say the look to camera at 8:06 gave me a chuckle at the cheesiness of "for the very first time". (Plus, why do magicians still ask "What was the card you were merely thinking of?" when it's been physically selected? We're not stupid and the ploy is condescending and irritating).
Hello, Spinningmonkey8427. I absolutely recommend that you never perform or watch any of my material. 👍
👑
Maybe I should just package it as-is and call it “Jeopardy! Trainer”. 😆
So impressive!
Thanks, buddy! Just wait! This is the future of character creation, IMO!
Interesting!
Far too long and drawn-out my crowd would be bored to death and I would lose them at the end or trying to get to the end of this trick
Definitely don’t perform it if it doesn’t suit you or your audiences.
Thanks Ben, I did get my issue sorted out getting a cone radius. But this method is also useful, thanks again!
I’m glad to hear that you worked it out!
@@benblaumentalism6245 Worked out really well, and I added the scaling to what I did as well.
His voice is coming straight from the marianas trench
So do you offer online courses somewhere or?
Hi Travis! I’m a university professor, and I’m lucky enough to be able to teach Unreal Engine courses at my institution. Perhaps one day, I’ll do a video course. The only trouble with that is that Unreal is a moving target, and since it takes time to produce a full video course, features and best practices can change. I make videos frequently for my actual classes where I work, and am just now trying to build a presence on RUclips. I like to say that I’m still “finding my voice” in this medium. I love sharing information!
@@benblaumentalism6245 They used to have a course on the Epic website that I was following with videos and tests after each video that I could take and was practicing at the same time in the editor but then it was taken down. Now I have a hard time learning from their "resources". I like listening to you. I hope you make it on YT one way or another.
You are too kind. There are so many talented Unreal instructors out there. I tend to be long-winded, but am working on it!
This is a great subject selection, excellent instruction, and great pacing.
You are way too nice! Thank you!😊
Need a longer Eugene video
Thanks, Ben!
Thanks for watching, maestro!
