You can freely buy gold, with that you can do whatever you want; buy units, energy, supplies etc. Some use it to make the game less slow by only buying energy or deal woth annoyances like not having the intel for next areas or materials for buildings but others also buy supplies, cash and gold and what we like to call a more sandbox approach to playing the game.
