I always hated how warlocks are done in dnd. Your 100% right. But they try to differentiate the warlock by saying they own the power and it cant be simply taken from the warlock....but the patron can turn it off. They tried to make the patron into Verizon, ok you bought the phone, but the service can be turned off. I would prefer if they went whole hog and made the pact for a slice of that patrons' soul/power, cant be turned off or diminished. I would love a campaign where the warlock breaks bad/breaks good, and the patron starts sending out minions to stop him because hes using part of his soul for all the goodie too shooing. Or a high charisma god grifting warlock that has boons from 5 different gods and he shows them off like one night stand trophies "oh this one? That was one wild night with the raven queen"

I have a similar take on religion, the only difference between a religion and a cult is public perception (or public acceptance)

I hear what you're saying but a correction for the rules of Dungeons & Dragons.... You roll 3d6 or 1d20 to determine what your stat is not your skill modifier. For example I would roll 3D 6 to determine what my Christmas score is.... Let's say I got a 16. That's pretty good! My stat modifier would be a + 3. No if I wanted to be proficient in a skill such as persuasion. I would purchase that skill and be able to use my proficiency modifier on it. So a level one character my proficiency modifier would be a + 2 And my ability modifier in charisma is that +3 we were just talking about. That's a +5 To my persuasion check witch is determined by a d20 roll. Which looks like this 1d20 +5. Say you rule a 12 that would make your ability to persuade someone a 17 overall. So that's the DC or difficulty class That the opponent would have to beat to not be persuaded to do something.
