Benjamin Harrison: The Unlucky President
In the 1888 U.S. Presidential election, Benjamin Harrison defeated popular incumbent Grover Cleveland in a surprising upset, winning the Electoral College while losing the popular vote. However, four years later, Cleveland reclaimed the presidency, making this outcome unique in American history-a pattern that wouldn't be repeated until 2024.
While historians often focus on Cleveland’s victory, few examine the life of the man sandwiched between his two terms, Benjamin Harrison. Benjamin Harrison surprisingly came from an important family in early American history. His father John Harrison was a member of congress, his grand father William Henry Harrison was a president, his great grand fath...

This video is a brief overview of Trier's history during Roman times, and a tour of the legacy they left behind. Make no mistake, there is a lot left over to see. Trier is a Roman city where you would least expect to find one, on a riverside in Western Germany. It was no political lightweight either, being the origin of Postumus and Constantine's careers as rulers of an empire. In fact, for a f...

Caguana is the largest Pre Columbian site in the Caribbean. With a dozen ball courts built to astrological alignments and beautiful petroglyphs in the rock, it is one of the most impressive Pre Columbian sites in America. Located in the back hills of Puerto Rico, this site was discovered by local farmers in the 1910's. It quickly came to reveal a lot about the Tainos, the Pre Columbian inhabita...

Many of you will know, following the conclusion of the 2021 Cleveland Indians season, they renamed themselves the Cleveland Guardians. Many outside the Cleveland area were left confused by this decision, unfamiliar with the Guardians of Traff...

For a full day, I wander around 'Old San Juan', the most historical part of the city. Almost exclusively home to buildings of centuries past, this part of the city was the beating heart of the island for most of its history. Looking the part of Havana's American cousin, Old San Juan's attractions are no more than a stone's throw away from each other on these colorful streets. In this video, I v...

Today, we head to the Mount Washington district of Pittsburgh to see one of the city's most enduring symbols, its inclines. A steep, nearly impassible mountain isolates the western side of the city, and hindered its early growth. However, late 19th century technology made a once long trip around the mountain take minutes with diagonal elevators climbing the slope. The Monongahela and Duquesne i...

One of the pillars holding the bridge up is broken and shifted a couple of inches. I always thought that might have something to do with why they closed it for vehicle traffic.

Long ago my Mother's ex-boyfriend died on that bridge. He had just got engaged to another girl and his friend had returned from the military to see his newborn child, so they went over to Illinois to drink and celebrate. He had a little convertible and they came back home drunk, hit the bend in the bridge at a very high speed, bounced and flipped over. Both were killed instantly. The bridge had a nightwatchman who witnessed the whole thing. The day he was killed was my Grandmother's birthday, so my Mother went and bought her a dozen red roses. The florist kindly threw in a 13th rose, which was white. My Grandmother immediately said it was bad luck. The next day they opened the newspaper to find on the front page a story about the crash, which was how she learned of his death. She went to the funeral and met his fiancé, who she said was very nice. Curiously they both had the same first name, just spelled slightly different. My Mom showed me the newspaper clipping when I was younger, however it got lost over time.

Ditch the fuzzy microphone that looks like you are sporting a chest hirsute on steroids, or a very fuzzy caterpillar about to attack your Adam's apple. The 1950's CIA black rim glasses could also go into the garbage pail.

Hey guy, two things to consider. First, years ago engineers believed, incorrectly, that a bend in a bridge somehow made it more stable. The McKinley Bridge a few miles south has a similar bend. Second, the reason old bridges were so narrow was because cars were narrow and low, in the 1920s. Cars had a double wide front seat. This made bridges obsolete. In 1970 a Chevy pickup truck would hold four grown men in the front seat. Yours was an interesting topic.

It's obvious that you had done quite a bit of research for this video. FYI ! You miss stated a couple of major points. In 1929, cars of that day were much smaller. The roadway lanes of that era were much narrower. Think Ford Model T's and Model A's. They were significantly narrower and shorter than cars of the 1960's and 70's. Also, major bridges of that era very often had curves designed in for structural integrity reasons that are no longer evident or needed with modern engineering design methods.

The question of how much of Rome we can still see today is also greatly determined by what states you acknoledge as real roman. With the "Byzantine" empire for example, you had an empire that, granted, mostly spoke Greek, but that was legally Rome, not a successor of it, literally what was left of the Rome we always think of. You can still see the Roman walls of Constantinople and the Hagia Sofia for example. And if you accept the HRE as Roman, then there is even way way more left of course.
