Treating Division with Humility: An Interview with Daryl Van Tongeren
As we move through another contentious US election season, Science for the Church has been interested to learn from scientists about polarization and why we are so divided. With their insights, we seek to identify ways individuals and their churches can better navigate division. In this video, Daryl Van Tongeren, a professor of psychology and the director of the Frost Center for Social Science Research at Hope College, describes how humility serves as a critical bridge to overcome pride and other key factors that contribute to polarization.

Why We Fight: An Interview with Kurt Gray

Political polarization impacts our families and churches. Whether that's a tendency to only associate with our own group, an avoidance of difficult topics, or outright fighting within families and congregations, many pastors find themselves thrust into these divides. That's where the science of psychology can be a tool for helping churches bridge those divides. On September 10, 2024, Drew inter...

A biblically comprised soul, John is. He rejects the creation account in favor of the Big Bang. He even told Richard Dawkins on camera that he believes evolution as Darwin saw it. His anti biblical positions on such things keeps him in good standing in the lofty Ivy League places where the philosophies of this age are promoted. The god of this world uses men like Lennox. He undermines the foundations of the Christian faith in the minds of many while claiming to be its defender.

So grateful to know that you enjoyed this! We hope the work we do always wrestles with important issues in ways that demonstrate that the gospel and the fruit of the Spirit are primary in shaping and forming our approach. That doesn't mean bypassing the issues worth wrestling over but it definitely doesn't allow room for intellectual-point-scoring either.

Has anyone questioned the age of the fossil records. I am specifically interested in subduction of the plates folding in on themselves over and over and burying the fossil records and then renewing them. They have used the half life of the nuclear sun to age the planet at 4 billion years old. Why can't it be a Trillion years old.? What if there was two suns and one left.?

Always liked Lennox since learning about him. It's so true; many churches seem run in a fashion of "sit down, shut up and listen to what the pastor/bishop/etc has to say" instead of welcoming questions or willing to discuss more difficult topics. Part of the trouble, I think, is there're a lot of folks out there who are expectant of their church leaders to know everything, and in that expectation, I think said leaders shy from questions, especially more difficult ones, because then it bares witness to their not knowing everything. Any good head of a church is going to admit there are things they do not know, and when faced with questions that they aren't 100% sure of, they can always answer the questions with the disclaimer that that is what they believe or figure to be true, or that they honestly don't know, which can open up some later discussion about it. None of us can know everything there is to know, but sharing with one another and testing it against the Word is how we learn. I'm thankful to attend a small church where open discussion is a little easier.

That's a great question, and one I can't definitively answer. Lennox was a guest interview for us so we don't know his full recording history. What I can say for sure is that most of his mathematics publications (see Research Gate at www.researchgate.net/profile/John-Lennox-3) occurred before RUclips was a substantial platform which might account for the gap.

Bringing science to religion is a good thing, IF it is truly science without underlying religious assumptions. I've followed Dr. Lennox for some time listening to his justifications for his religious beliefs. Belief without evidence is fine as long as you acknowledge the lack of or weakness of the evidence. You believe the god of the Abrahamic religions exists, period. It is just a personal belief. It is when someone like Dr. Lennox tries to justify his belief in a god, call it God, that things go downhill. The same applies to Dr. Francis Collins and other scientists who believe in some kind of God-as-a-being. I my opinion, Lennox and his believing compatriots have zero evidence that God exists. Their given evidence is not evidence at all -- it is their spin on what they state as evidence. One hears, "I believe God created evolution and His hand guided it to produce humans who can commune and worship Him." That is a crazy belief without evidence, but okay as a personal belief. One has to wonder, why would an infinite, uncreated, all-powerful God of the entire universe need and want to commune with flawed human beings? Why would He need and want to be worshipped? No answer is forthcoming from the believers like Lennox. And look at evolution. If God created and guided evolution, He did a very poor job of it. There are all types of grotesque life forms that have evolved. I wonder if Lennox and Collins have seen babies born with no head and brain, born with part of a twin sticking out of them, born with all sorts of genetic malformations. This is God's work in their belief. It staggers the mind to think of how people of such intellect can be fooled so badly. But fooled they are. Many times, as in the case of Francis Collins, their belief stems from a so-called "religious experience." According to Collins, his experience occurred while he was hiking in the Cascade mountains. They sincerely believe that they have either seen God, felt God, and/or had such a profound experience that they are compelled to believe in God's existence, and in Lennox and Collins' case, the Christian God only. Did they consider that they most likely experienced a hypersensory episode? An experience where the sense of self dissipates and one perceives level of nature unseen in normal consciousness. Jane Goodall reported such an experience as have astronauts. This is an uncommon, but achievable brain/mind state. One can achieve this sort of subjective experience through meditation. Enough. They will have to figure it out for themselves.

For me, I use an analogy, from language. In Japan, they have two dictionaries. Japanese language is, by itself, is very rigid. And doesn’t grow easily. So, in order for the Japanese People to use and catalog the material that came to Japan from other countries, people, and the expanding nature of ideas; they now have two dictionaries. One contains the old and very basic dictionary of words of traditional Japanese. The other is what even the Japanese people call the Japanese Slang Dictionary; which includes all those new words and terms from other places. This is a rational, reasonable, and logical solution for the expanding nature of the Japanese place in the modern World. And I find it very mature. And so I come to my questions about atheist people in science. One has to ask why science can’t have two catalogs of terms: One which gives terms of nature that stands inside the vision and observations inside of science. A second catalog which dictates to scientists that which are paradoxical to the first catalog (including those things which include Christian ideas). The fact that this isn’t available inside the scientific community, dictates and outlines the childish nature of atheists in science. Science has retrenched away from the search from knowledge, in many cases. At that, stands as a tragedy.

Talking to the converted and misdirected. It is amazing that an intelligent person can be such a zealot. His belief in the nonsense he expounds is based on unproven events, miracles and resurrection of dead people. How can such a man seriously try to convince people into having to believe in fairy tales and unproven promises of life after death. It is his crime to give people false hope

The Ford motor car has evolved from the first model T and its prototypes to what it is today. However, there are still Model Ts in existence and of every Ford model from then til now. Would there not also be a record in existence of every evolutionary step of each species and especially of the development of one species into another? Let Science speak for itself in this matter, not the manipulation, coercion, falsification and self interests of scientists to support a particular view. No Christian scientist is ramming a religious view down your throat, only presenting a conclusion as they have arrived at after exhaustive examination of the evidence as it presents itself. It is no skin of John Lennox's nose whether you believe in God or not. This is your own personal journey. However, don't go on that journey blindfolded, open the eyes of your mind and really look at all the evidence, not just that which you have a bias towards.

The point about not trusting a brain made by random and unguided processesat 17:00 is very appealing and I want it to be true. But I have a doubt and maybe you can help me. Our bodies were made over millions of years by trial and error. If a combination worked it survived, if not, it failed and that was it. Like the components of a basic cell for instance. The same could be the case for rationality. If a prototype brain was not producing rational thoughts it would not survive and a new prototype would emerge and if it was rational in its thoughts it would survive and continue on to the next model. For instance if a prototype brain said it was ok to walk off cliffs, that prototype would not continue. But one that did the opposite would do so and continue to maybe a better and more rational brain still. And so the process would continue. I hope you understand what I am trying to get at. I would be interested to hear from you.

    • @danielpaul4626

I'll try to give some thoughts here: firstly I think the existence of belief in God is actually evidence for that claim. You see, in an atheistic worldview, as Dawkins says, God is a delusion, and in fact that is true of anything "supernatural". So that is an example of where the unguided process of evolution actually produced a delusion--something completely untrue. Yet over 90 percent if not more of humans throughout history have believed in something supernatural, and has actually helped them survive and dominate other people groups because it gave them unity, meaning, and the illusion of purpose. So this delusion has actually furthered evolution and has helped it progress, as would any other delusions that give humans a sense of ultimate purpose to help them thrive as a species. Using your language, it "worked" but now we know it actually wasn't "rational". If evolution uses this irrationality to further a species, how can we know what other aspects of the brain created by evolution are irrational or not?
