Positioning Is Key | Dalton Grand Prix Road Race Cat 3/4
Dalton Grand Prix Road Race kicked off the Ominium weekend for me. The Race featured a 6 lap 9 mile loop with 50+ riders in the field from around the southeast. Positioning was a premium for the race as the yellow line rule was in effect for the entire race until the last 200 meters of the final lap. Watch as I navigate through the peloton to make my way toward the front of the group.

    I think you rode a decent race by riding at the back, when it came towards the end if you would have surfed the other wheels a little better I think you could have been there. It just seemed like you were tentative to ride wheels when the speed really picked up, use other peoples speed to get you there. Great footage!! Keep it up!

    So, here it comes...the unpopular opinion/comment....ready? lol Nah, seriously tho...GREAT race! Whenever I know I'm going to a packed crowd race (Winston-Salem) or a small town one (like this one), I will throw together a small pit bag to put over near the multiple extra wheelsets, because I can't afford those either. I have a Ryobi cordless pump with presta adapter (just pull the trigger!), a few bandage items (you never know), etc, that can be used just in case the pit area isn't stocked like it is whenever there's a ton of P/1 teams in the event. If you can help it, never leave your fate up to expectations you can't control.

I love these masters races but they don’t really get any easier. Just smoother and more fluid I’d say. I got my ass handed to me at the masters 35+ out at Valley of The Sun in Phoenix this year (I’m racing age 44 so one year away from being able to do 45+). Plenty of Stars and Stripes and ex state champs in the mix there as well. Looking on the bright side, plenty of things to learn from such experienced riders. Keep it up! 💫👊

    As a retired Professional football player myself. I picked up cycling during the pandemic. I moved up pretty quickly. I’m a Cat 3 but enough points to go P2. But I race 40+ now and it’s just as tough. So I would consider that in my opinion. Keep grinding brother.

    • @JasonJuicebeatsMessing
      @JasonJuicebeatsMessing 4 месяца назад

      Definitely! The Masters is still Cat 1s and 2s just older. Last masters race I did was faster than the 3/4. I think I have enough to voluntarily move up to Cat 2 as well, but I want to hold out to get stronger and more confident before I move up. This sport is so fun, but in some ways more challenging than football was.

    Hey man, nice vid! Been watching the channel for a while and you race reviews are always entertaining. A bit of critique that I think would help is to capitalize on the areas where you can take some advantages. On that long stretch and sweeping left turn, I notice your power decreases to zero multiple times even when a group is in sight when they are pretty close to bridge to. As a bigger rider, you have the most advantage in the group at that section, as raw watts matters most on flat straight land, no matter the wind situation. Just keep your power up and consistent when trying to catch to a group if you are on the front and do not let up! In addition, take advantage of the full road to maintain your speed and even out your power. (Oustide to apex to outside) and you can keep pedaling for more time. It actually will be more benefical to be closer the front in the stairstep section since this area is more consequential for bigger riders. Being near the back opens gaps from an accordian effect. And since you are bigger, force = mass x acceleration, it requires much more force for you to accelerate to get back in the group. Sorry if I'm rambling, but being a smaller rider, I have to hide from the wind as smaller watts for the same w/kg does not get me the same speed. With this knowledge, I capitalize on pushing massive power on hills and corners and being as surgy as possible to get rid of riders who can't keep up with those efforts to create breakaways, similar to what the breakaway guys did in the vid. Hope this helps!
