Great instruction, has given me some inspiration
What kind of madness is this climbing with 2 ropes?
@@himhim3344 legally compliant madness, if you happen to work within the UK.
John Hancock, keep grinding
I walked up there the other day and about 100 meters before there I saw a strange Pink object about 1 foot in diameter on a mowed bit of grass. . Any ideas what it was ?

hello. what is the lightning trigger model that you use?
When you punch holes into the canopy, you increase the specific surface area. Therefore the load that the wind creates increases.
Can you explain more? If we selectively punch holes throughout the canopy it seems like it would be possible to significantly reduce the SA without having as significant an impact on the mass of the canopy, thus reducing the specific SA. Maybe I'm not understanding the concept correctly..?
Awesome work! We'd like to collaborate, how can we get in touch? :)
can you eat that fungi on the roots?
You have a rare gift for teaching, John! I struggled with focus stacking for too long then your tutorial on this subject appeared and, for me, the nickel dropped!! Too many assume that we are all born with the skills that you have perfected....taint so! Thanks, John, ever so much!
That’s very kind of you to say, thank you 🙏
Hi John. Wondering if you have a website for your arborist work. Intrigued.
Hi Ted, I don’t, the nearest thing to it would be our college f/b page - Pershore College Arboriculture
Can you add that you carried out a resonance test using a sounding hammer on your report? Great video 😊
Great video.
Outstanding video, John! I especially like your running dialog with your philosophy on nature! Would you share with me the lens you are using? Many thanks!
What a pro!
Fron PS i would not save as jpeg when you import back to lightroom
Hi Tony, I’d only use jpeg for the final image if posting onto social media
Great job as always, very inspirational.
Very kind of you Mark, thank you
Wonderful captures but i wonder why don´t you use the focus bracketing option from your camera? best all, Remus
I’m stuck in my ways 🙃
I’ve owned a D850 for several years and only recently got unstuck and started using focus shift for macro, so much more convenient than any of my previous focus stacking methods.
You're such a fun guy, Richard.
Thank you for watching & taking the time to comment, Cheers Richard 👍
What is the tripod you used, it looks very effective and stable.
i have my aerial rescue assessment in a few days, this was super helpful!
It should be the first knot they ask you to demonstrate, best of luck 👍
How is the tree now please ? Is there any hope she can flourish again?
Hi were you able to visit the rest of the base ?
Not much left Dan, one or two buildings still remain, including the hospital at Croome of course..
@@johnhancock5457 oh ok 523 metres from where to made you video is loads of buildings which look interesting
The use of a cambium saver is a great idea but why only on one of the ropes, surely the second rope is going to cause as much damage to the tree. Coming from a rock climbing background it's an absolute no-no to have your ropes rubbing like this. Using two anchor points, how difficult is it to manage positioning (of effectively two systems) with one hand if you need the other for balance/stability/holding on? This seems to be a major drawback of having two anchor ropes. I don't think the rope access industry has this problem because they are working two dimensional. I do wonder whether the HSE, in their zeal to make an industry 'safer' have not shot themselves (and us) in the foot and made things more complicated and possibly less safe.
Absolutely.
HSE has joined tree climbers and window cleaners all into one forgetting arborists are three dimensional making it harder to climb without two anchor points it’s been done for years
13mm 16 strand arborist ropes are very durable. 100% of the strength is in the sheath, the core is only to keep the shape. You can use them without a friction saver. It'll shorten the lifespan a bit and the rope will get dirtier. Also the added friction is annoying but it's running over bark, not rocks. But for zigzags you usually want to use a ~11.7mm 24 strand rope. Those have a 50/50 sheath to core strength so while working you need to use a friction saver. For smaller ascent increments like what he was doing It'll be ok because not much weight in his main line so it wasn't getting much friction.
Looks to be a great turnout. Thank you for sharing.🐴
Nice video 👍
Nice video about the process of taking the photo. Would love to see another one with the post processing :)
This tree was a symbol of the old and ancient order of the world.
Nice and simple straight forward instructions
What is the cambium saver used for?
To protect the cambium and outer bark of the tree against friction from the rope

Hi John, are these available for purchase please? There's only 1 of me at the end (unless you have any more) but I'd love to buy it. Red 206 reg MD04 WUB. Thank you!
Hi, what I can do is load the complete video onto my website, you can then buy a copy and edit it down, does that help?

Morning, if I get time I’ll dig out the individual video, each one is about 16 seconds long in total 👍
Hi John! Is there a way I could use a tiny bit of footage? The "off road" 306 and there is a satin grey one too with "piggy" front number plate... Did you get any of that? 😀 Thanks for videoing and uploading so quick!
super :)

Nice work. I see that you waited a good long time, so well done. I spent a fair bit of growing up time on that seafront and saw a few hefty boulders washed right up onto the road. Nowadays, whenever there's a storm in the news, I check the papers for the obligatory pic from Porthcawl. KA-BOOM! Now that's wave action.
Hi John, I used to live in croome many years ago, I came across some old bunkers there but i dont think they are these ones. I still know a couple people live there if i go back I wouldnt mind to have a look if you could pinpoint them for me please? many thanks
Find me on Twitter and I’ll PM you - JohnHancockcouk
Using 2 ropes is awesome when it benefits your positioning abilities and it’s a big open canopy like this, but in the real world it’s rarely like that not for me anyway. Plus if someone is willing to clime the good old tried and tested way with one rope an a lanyard there gunna work faster more efficiently and make more money! Also If I ever need rescuing from the tree and you mess about setting 2 lines before saving me you will nether work with me again. The HSE have just lumped us tree climbers in with all the rope access workers like window cleaners and others who just go up and dawn a clear path with no or very little obstacles in the way with a nice preinstalled anchor point. Whereas we work in a very complicated, dynamic, three dimensional environment where it is just NOT PRACTICAL to be constantly managing 2 rope systems! Anyway rant over it’s law now anyway so if you don’t do it when it’s technically possible to do it and you get injured you best kiss any insurance payouts goodbye that’s what really boils my blood but whatever I still think we do the best job in the world but I wish they would just leave us alone and let us get on with it 🤬😒
I agree with you there insunace expectations are a joke and forget 2 ropes when the dam thing is rotten. I have been woring on some ways of dealing with badly rotten trees using a softstrop with no stopper knot and a line to a nearby tree much better than getting smashed into the floor tangled in bastard rope
I climbed on SRT and DRT on a single rope before getting my tickets with the two rope system. You dont HAVE to use two ropes if you can make a fair point that it will hinder your safety in any way, such as dead trees or no suitable secondary anchor. I find myself using SRT for access and switching over to DRT on a second line while leaving the SRT line for rescue anyway, whether I have two anchor points or not. As for rescue, and spike work, only one line is required but its best practise to install is before working the tree, as I do with my SRT line. This does take longer, and it may mean less work gets done, but since I get paid day rate regardless and dont see a penny if I work faster I'll stick to the rules. Because trust me, if you fuck up on only one rope and HSE find out, the insurance company wont pay out and the boss will drop you in a second while saying you were breaking rules. TLDR; Run two ropes when you can, just to cover your arse because boss's are araseholes.
@@johnlongwood5709 a company/ court will just wash there hands with you if you have an accident while using SRT unfortunately. But for rescue you wouldn’t at the end of the day your saving someone’s life. so regardless how you get them out the tree legal or not there’s life’s more important.
i want to learn how to do this just for the fun of doing so, do you know of any good training centres around the Birmingham area or close to it ?
Hi Garry, there will be lots of NPTC instructors in and around your area, just get on Google and search ‘tree climbing courses’ 👍
@@johnhancock5457 Thanks for the reply, I will have a search and see what I can find.
So is this the new standard ? We have to now use the extra system at each point as a backup. I climb drt on a hitchclimber and blakes on the other end, I set the hitchclimber to O rig when I reach my anchor. So, if I use the two ends and the side strop all the time on the way to the main anchor, is it then acceptable to send for a second line to be sent up, which is pre tied at a base anchor, run it through a natural fork near the main anchor, and then use a device such as an ART positioner running on that single line as the backup ?
Art I don’t think is design to be used in a single line. Don’t take my word for it but check before doing so
Can you remove it? If so how?
The fungi? Not you can’t, the fungi you see is just the fruiting body, the mycelium is throughout the tree.
Did you mention what tripod you are using? I might have missed it. Can you tell me what it is please?
Would love to know as well
