    When you punch holes into the canopy, you increase the specific surface area. Therefore the load that the wind creates increases.

      Can you explain more? If we selectively punch holes throughout the canopy it seems like it would be possible to significantly reduce the SA without having as significant an impact on the mass of the canopy, thus reducing the specific SA. Maybe I'm not understanding the concept correctly..?

    The use of a cambium saver is a great idea but why only on one of the ropes, surely the second rope is going to cause as much damage to the tree. Coming from a rock climbing background it's an absolute no-no to have your ropes rubbing like this. Using two anchor points, how difficult is it to manage positioning (of effectively two systems) with one hand if you need the other for balance/stability/holding on? This seems to be a major drawback of having two anchor ropes. I don't think the rope access industry has this problem because they are working two dimensional. I do wonder whether the HSE, in their zeal to make an industry 'safer' have not shot themselves (and us) in the foot and made things more complicated and possibly less safe.

      13mm 16 strand arborist ropes are very durable. 100% of the strength is in the sheath, the core is only to keep the shape. You can use them without a friction saver. It'll shorten the lifespan a bit and the rope will get dirtier. Also the added friction is annoying but it's running over bark, not rocks. But for zigzags you usually want to use a ~11.7mm 24 strand rope. Those have a 50/50 sheath to core strength so while working you need to use a friction saver. For smaller ascent increments like what he was doing It'll be ok because not much weight in his main line so it wasn't getting much friction.

    Using 2 ropes is awesome when it benefits your positioning abilities and it’s a big open canopy like this, but in the real world it’s rarely like that not for me anyway. Plus if someone is willing to clime the good old tried and tested way with one rope an a lanyard there gunna work faster more efficiently and make more money! Also If I ever need rescuing from the tree and you mess about setting 2 lines before saving me you will nether work with me again. The HSE have just lumped us tree climbers in with all the rope access workers like window cleaners and others who just go up and dawn a clear path with no or very little obstacles in the way with a nice preinstalled anchor point. Whereas we work in a very complicated, dynamic, three dimensional environment where it is just NOT PRACTICAL to be constantly managing 2 rope systems! Anyway rant over it’s law now anyway so if you don’t do it when it’s technically possible to do it and you get injured you best kiss any insurance payouts goodbye that’s what really boils my blood but whatever I still think we do the best job in the world but I wish they would just leave us alone and let us get on with it 🤬😒

      I agree with you there insunace expectations are a joke and forget 2 ropes when the dam thing is rotten. I have been woring on some ways of dealing with badly rotten trees using a softstrop with no stopper knot and a line to a nearby tree much better than getting smashed into the floor tangled in bastard rope

    • @johnlongwood5709

      I climbed on SRT and DRT on a single rope before getting my tickets with the two rope system. You dont HAVE to use two ropes if you can make a fair point that it will hinder your safety in any way, such as dead trees or no suitable secondary anchor. I find myself using SRT for access and switching over to DRT on a second line while leaving the SRT line for rescue anyway, whether I have two anchor points or not. As for rescue, and spike work, only one line is required but its best practise to install is before working the tree, as I do with my SRT line. This does take longer, and it may mean less work gets done, but since I get paid day rate regardless and dont see a penny if I work faster I'll stick to the rules. Because trust me, if you fuck up on only one rope and HSE find out, the insurance company wont pay out and the boss will drop you in a second while saying you were breaking rules. TLDR; Run two ropes when you can, just to cover your arse because boss's are araseholes.

    • @2000Jack
      @2000Jack 2 года назад

      @@johnlongwood5709 a company/ court will just wash there hands with you if you have an accident while using SRT unfortunately. But for rescue you wouldn’t at the end of the day your saving someone’s life. so regardless how you get them out the tree legal or not there’s life’s more important.

    So is this the new standard ? We have to now use the extra system at each point as a backup. I climb drt on a hitchclimber and blakes on the other end, I set the hitchclimber to O rig when I reach my anchor. So, if I use the two ends and the side strop all the time on the way to the main anchor, is it then acceptable to send for a second line to be sent up, which is pre tied at a base anchor, run it through a natural fork near the main anchor, and then use a device such as an ART positioner running on that single line as the backup ?
